Covid vaccines face blood clot concerns | WION

In a foreboding moment, Ladapo said, Florida will completely reject fear. While it is a common and sensible practice for government officials to call for calm in moments of crisis, the problem is that Ladapos track record suggests he thinks people are overreacting to a problem that his state is in fact under-reacting to.

Ladapo is a signatory of the controversial 2020 Great Barrington Declaration, a statement published on a website sponsored by a libertarian think tank and signed by scientists calling for non-high-risk people to resume normal life during the pandemic and to let herd immunity protect the public. This theory of resolving the pandemic was a fringe view: Most scientists and public health experts pointed out that this approach would be unprecedented, lacked scientific backing, ethically problematic and that there was no plausible way to prevent transmission to high-risk people.

The Orlando Sentinel has a good rundown of Ladapo’s skepticism of or advocacy against many of the standard public health protocols adopted around the world to mitigate the virus:

DeSantis seems to be taking Florida even further down a path of Covid chaos. One hopes other Republican governors dont try to follow his lead.

Ron Desantis Hires New Surgeon General Whos Anti

Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced Dr. Joseph Ladapo as Floridas newest surgeon general and secretary of Floridas Department of Health, who has a history of going against science when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic. DNC spokesperson Adonna Biel released the following statement:

There has been no governor who has been more pro-COVID than Ron DeSantis and his newest hire, Dr. Joseph Ladapo, is further confirmation of that. Instead of going with a trusted advocate for science, DeSantis is once again playing games with peoples lives by appointing someone who has trafficked anti-vaccine and anti-mask rhetoric. The American people are ready to return to normalcy and the DeSantis playbook of prolonging the pandemic is dangerous and wreaking havoc on his own state.

A look at Ladapos history on COVID-19:

People Who Have Recovered From Covid

This statement by Ladapo came from the same column where he questioned vaccine mandates. Its noteworthy not because it is controversial on its face but because the new surgeon general signed a document last year called the Great Barrington Declaration.

The declaration was crafted in October 2020 by medical experts who believed that herd immunity could be reached by allowing the less vulnerable people to be infected, while at the same time shielding the most vulnerable from the virus.

The most compassionate approach that balances the risks and benefits of reaching herd immunity, is to allow those who are at minimal risk of death to live their lives normally to build up immunity to the virus through natural infection, the document reads.

The idea was panned by some leading health authorities. The leader of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called it unethical and not an option. The virus came with too many unknowns to allow it to spread unchecked, Tedros said, noting that plenty of younger patients have died from it.

Never in the history of public health has herd immunity been used as a strategy for responding to an outbreak, let alone a pandemic, Tedros said, according to The Guardian.

On Tuesday, Ladapo acknowledged that he signed the document, although he added that he did not agree with all of its provisions.

As the Delta variant of COVID-19 sweeps across the United States and the world, more businesses, companies, and universities are requiring vaccination. Hesitancies to vaccinate come from a variety of places but educating yourself on the risks of the vaccine versus the risk of getting COVID can help aid your decision.

The Claim: Cdc Data Shows ‘more Children Will Die’ From The Covid

Politics Not Science Behind Failure to Acknowledge COVID Vaccine ...

Public health officials are encouraging all American adults to receive COVID-19 booster shots due to the emergence of the omicron variant. Meanwhile, children are still receiving their first doses of the vaccine.

But online, some claim children face more risk from the vaccine than COVID-19 itself.

The article accumulated more than 3,500 shares within two days. Similar claims have also been shared.

As evidence for its claim, the Gateway Pundit cites an Oct. 31 Substack newsletter from Toby Rogers, who also writes for the anti-vaccine organization Children’s Health Defense. The newsletter claims “the Biden administration plan would kill 5,248 children via Pfizer mRNA shots.”

Fact check:Former Pfizer VP spreads false claim about COVID-19 vaccines and child deaths

USA TODAY previously rated False a claim that children are 50 times more likely to die from the COVID-19 vaccine than the virus. This claim is similarly wrong.

Public health officials say the vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech is safe and effective at preventing COVID-19 in children ages 5-11. As other independent fact-checkingorganizations have reported, the benefits of the vaccine outweigh its known and potential risks.

“Over 700 children have died due to COVID-19 in the United States,” Dr. Sonja Rasmussen, a professor in the departments of pediatrics and epidemiology at the University of Florida, said in an email. “I am not aware of any deaths in children that have been attributed to the COVID-19 vaccine.”

Vaers Data Not Proof Of Vaccine Deaths

The claim in Rogers’ newsletter is partially based on a distortion of data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, commonly referred to as VAERS.

Public health agencies use VAERS as a “national early warning system” to detect possible safety problems associated with approved vaccines. Anyone, from vaccine recipients to manufacturers, can submit reports of adverse events following vaccination.

The 5,248 figure in the newsletter stems from a paper that claims VAERS undercounts fatal reactions to the COVID-19 vaccines by a factor of 41. Rogers then multiplied that number by 128 reports of death among Pfizer and Moderna vaccine recipients ages 12-24.

“The Pfizer data is so bad that it’s useless,” Rogers said in an email. “So I developed a ‘best guess under the circumstances.'”

But his math is built on invalid assumptions, experts say.

As USA TODAY has previously reported, VAERS reports are unverified and cannot be used to determine whether an adverse event was caused by a vaccine. Dr. Sean O’Leary, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus, said anti-vaccine activists frequently use the database to spread misinformation.

“One cannot determine causality with VAERS,” he told USA TODAY in an email. “Just because something is reported after vaccination in VAERS absolutely does not mean that the vaccine was the cause.”

White House Mandates Pfizer Vaccines For Millions Of Citizens Before The Fda Clinical Or Safety Reviews Have Been Made Public

Omission bias can potentially influence vaccine decisions. In a survey study dating back three decades, researchers asked participants to imagine a scenario in which a child faced risks of dying, either from a flu infection or from a rare flu vaccine complication. Though the risk of dying from vaccine complication was only half the risk of dying from flu itself, many participants still declined vaccination. This is evidence that they perceived the consequences of omission as more acceptable than the consequences of commission . Subsequent studies have shown similar dynamics with different vaccine types.

Guarding against omission bias and other mental blind spots is one part of promoting better vaccine decisions

Americans can take several steps to mitigate their natural omission bias about Covid-19 vaccines. First, as with other cognitive biases, the first step is recognition. We cant address what we dont recognize, so the first step to avoiding distortions from omission bias is to acknowledge that it can exist.

Another step is to counteract other tendencies that can stoke omission bias. For instance, Covid-19 and other decisions can depend on a persons point of reference a concept known in behavioral science as reference dependence. Unfortunately, using the wrong reference point can drive omission bias: if I reference the risk of action against present comfort , inaction feels safer.

Risk Of Myocarditis Much Higher With Covid

Why COVID-19 vaccines have yet been advertised on TV in the US

The strongest tie between the vaccine and an adverse event was myocarditis, with an excess risk of 1 to 5 events per 100,000 people, an RR of 3.24 , and a risk difference of 2.7 events per 100,000 . Myocarditis after vaccination was seen mostly in men aged 20 to 34.

In contrast, previous SARS-CoV-2 infection among unvaccinated patients was associated with a significantly elevated risk of myocarditis (RR, 18.28 risk difference, 11.0 events per 100,000 persons .

Other vaccine-linked adverse events included swollen lymph nodes . The increased risk of Bell’s palsy was small .

Previous SARS-CoV-2 infections were also associated with multiple serious adverse events in addition to myocarditis, including pericarditis , heart rhythm abnormalities, deep vein thrombosis , pulmonary embolism , heart attack, intracranial hemorrhage , and thrombocytopenia .

The authors quantified the COVID-19related risks thus: abnormal heart rhythms , kidney damage , pericarditis , pulmonary embolism , deep vein thrombosis , heart attack , and stroke .

The authors noted that VAERS doesnt determine whether a given negative reaction was caused by a vaccine the system only tracks bad outcomes that happen soon after a jab. The systems reports are unverified, and anyone can file one. Still, Ladapo and Risch noted that, for example, the government had detected 321 cases of myocarditis heart inflammation within five days of vaccination, compared to zero a week and a half out from vaccination.

The large clustering of certain adverse events immediately after vaccination is concerning, and the silence around these potential signals of harm reflects the politics surrounding COVID-19 vaccines, the authors wrote.

Yet the government was not silent on the myocarditis risk. According to a webpage accessed via the internet archive, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had posted information about myocarditis the week before the experts column published.

The known and potential benefits of COVID-19 vaccination outweigh the known and potential risks, including the possible risk of myocarditis or pericarditis, the agency wrote.

Why Is The Covid

Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson were all authorized for emergency use by the Food and Drug Administration . The Pfizer vaccine recently received full FDA approval. When the FDA reviews vaccines, they go through a much more rigorous review than typical drugs. In essence, vaccines are given to healthy people, so the FDA is looking at the side effects and success of the vaccine very closely. Therefore, it has taken several months for the vaccine to be fully approved by the FDA.

Currently, 171 million Americans are vaccinated, and ultimately all those people have participated in a research study that has helped the FDA approve the vaccine.

Ron Desantis Hits A New Low With His Covid

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has long been at the forefront of the Republican Party’s Covid-19 denialism, opposing mask mandates and social distancing and condoning the spread of vaccine misinformation all while boasting about it on Fox News as a victory for freedom. Hes now breaking frightening new ground by appointing a surgeon general who has likened vaccination efforts to a misguided religion and believes the dangers of Covid are widely exaggerated.

DeSantis appointment of Joseph Ladapo is troubling on two levels. It means the states top public health official will be disseminating health advice out of line with leading public health guidance across the country and downplaying the states extraordinary Covid crisis. It will also give more expert heft to DeSantis extreme policy choices as he continually denies the dangers of Covid in his state despite jaw-dropping hospitalization rates and casualties in recent months.

How Do The Side Effects Compare

Fact check: COVID

When it comes to new vaccines, the issue of safety is understandably on everyoneâs minds.

The question âhow safe is this vaccine?â can be translated as âwhat is the risk of developing side effects from this vaccine?â And, in answering this query, it is important to note there is no drug â not even the most common painkiller â that is entirely free from side effects.

Scientists have broken down the side effects that they expect to occur with the BioNTech vaccine â currently the only one with approval for use in the U.K. and the U.S. â into âvery common,â âcommon,â and âuncommon.â

Very common side effects, which may affect more than 1 in 10 people, include:

  • pain at the injection site
  • tiredness

recommend that everyone take the flu vaccine, except for children younger than 6 months of age or those with severe allergies to the flu vaccine or any ingredient in the vaccine.

For MMR, the listed as common by the CDC are:

  • sore arm from the shot
  • fever
  • mild rash
  • temporary pain and stiffness in the joints

Rarely, the vaccine may trigger febrile seizures, swelling in the cheeks or neck, or a temporary low platelet count in the blood. However, none of these are life threatening or have long-term effects.

Dr Joshua Liao Explores How Omission Bias Affects The Way Your Mind Naturally Thinks About The Risk Of Measures Like Vaccination And How You Can Rationally Overcome It

The U.S. is racing to vaccinate its population against Covid-19. Over a third of all adults have gotten at least one vaccine dose and many others intend to do the same. Despite these encouraging trends, some Americans remain reluctant to get one due to concerns about severe adverse effects, such as blood clots and blood count abnormalities recently reported with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

While extremely rare thus far, those cases prompted federal regulators to recommend pausing use of the vaccine a development that nearly 30% of Americans in a recent poll interpreted as an example of why Covid-19 vaccines may be unsafe, untested, and best avoided. This example offers an important lesson: even when adverse events are rare and regulators are cautious, the specter of harm and uncertainty can be enough for many people to hesitate.

While I can empathize with these concerns, they also spotlight the behavioral wiring of the human mind. As Ive noted before, people frequently have cognitive tendencies what behavioral scientists call cognitive biases and heuristics that can help them make decisions under certain circumstances. But in others, this wiring can also create mental blind spots that lead to poor choices.

There Are Concerning Trends On Blood Clots And Low Platelets Not That The Authorities Will Tell You

One remarkable aspect of the Covid-19 pandemic has been how often unpopular scientific ideas, from the lab-leak theory to the efficacy of masks, were initially dismissed, even ridiculed, only to resurface later in mainstream thinking. Differences of opinion have sometimes been rooted in disagreement over the underlying science. But the more common motivation has been political.

Another reversal in thinking may be imminent. Some scientists have raised concerns that the safety risks of Covid-19 vaccines have been underestimated. But the politics of vaccination has relegated their concerns to the outskirts of scientific thinkingfor now.

Historically, the safety of medicationsincluding vaccinesis often not fully understood until they are deployed in large populations. Examples include rofecoxib , a pain reliever that increased the risk of heart attack and stroke antidepressants that appeared to increase suicide attempts among young adults and an influenza vaccine used in the 2009-10 swine flu epidemic that was suspected of causing febrile convulsions and narcolepsy in children. Evidence from the real world is valuable, as clinical trials often enroll patients who arent representative of the general population. We learn more about drug safety from real-world evidence and can adjust clinical recommendations to balance risk and benefits.
