Another Covid Symptom Joins The List: Mouth Rash

By E.J. Mundell HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, July 15, 2020 — While rashes on the skin have long been tied to COVID-19, doctors in Spain report that rashes on the inside of the mouth are also occurring in some cases.

The rashes are clinically known as enanthem, and it’s not surprising that they are showing up with COVID-19, said a U.S. dermatologist unconnected to the new study.

“An enanthem is a rash on the mucous membranes,” explained Dr. Michele Green, who practices at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. “It is very common in patients with viral infections like chickenpox and hand, foot and mouth disease. It is characteristic of many viral rashes to affect mucous membranes.”

The new Spanish study was published July 15 in JAMA Dermatology. Researchers led by Dr. Juan Jimenez-Cauhe, of University Hospital Ramon y Cajal in Madrid, examined 21 patients diagnosed in early April with COVID-19 and associated skin rashes.

Of these patients, six patients had enanthem on the inside of their mouths. The affected patients ranged in age from 40 to 69, the team said, and four of the six were women.

The mouth rash appeared anywhere from two days before the onset of other COVID symptoms to 24 days after, with an average time of about 12 days after onset of symptoms.

In most cases, the enanthem did not appear to be tied to any medicines the patients were taking, further strengthening the notion that it was illness with the new coronavirus causing the reddish spots to appear.

What Are The Possible Causes Of Covid Tongue

COVID tongue could be the result of inflamed disease receptors in the mouth, Dr. Russo says. ACE2 receptors, enzymes that act as a point of entry for SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses, exist in large numbers on the tongue and mucous membranes of the mouth. After being exposed to the virus, they may go haywire, causing the swelling, bumps, and patchiness associated with COVID tongue.

Another theory: The new coronavirus can cause inflammation in the blood vessels, in general, Dr. Russo says, potentially leading to symptoms in the mouth and elsewhere in the body. In other words, instead of inflaming those ACE2 receptors, the virus could be messing with the blood vessels in the tongue and mouth, resulting in COVID tongue. More research is needed to determine the true cause of COVID tongue.

Number Of Children Testing Positive For Covid

covid tongue may be another coronavirus symptom

Schaffner hasnt seen cases of COVID tongue, but he has heard it discussed. It may not be that the mouth is vulnerable to the new coronavirus, but that COVID-19 may set up an immune circumstance such that other viruses such as herpes labialis the herpes virus above the waist, or herpes simplex virus type 1, which causes an infection of the lips, mouth, or gums may perhaps activate, Schaffner said.

Researchers still need to determine whether any mouth and tongue issues are indeed related to COVID-19, he added.

Londoners With Cold Symptoms More Likely To Have Covid Says Expert

Professor behind symptom tracker app says Omicron variant causes headaches, sore throat and runny nose

People who have cold-like symptoms in London are more likely to have Covid than a cold, according to the scientist behind the Zoe coronavirus symptom tracker app.

Prof Tim Spector told BBC Radio 4s Today programme that most of the symptoms of Omicron were the same as those of a common cold, including headaches, sore throat, runny nose, fatigue and sneezing.

Spector urged people with cold symptoms and not just the classic Covid symptoms to take a test. Things like fever, cough and loss of smell are now in the minority of symptoms we are seeing, he said. Most people dont have classic symptoms.

He added: In London, where Covid is increasing rapidly, its far more likely to be Covid than it is to be a cold. Were seeing doubling in the numbers equivalent to whats being seen elsewhere, every two and a half days.

Omicron is already the dominant Covid variant in London and will soon account for nearly all infections.

My gut feeling is that Omicron is very much like the sort of flu pandemic we planned for a lot of sickness absence from work in a short period, which will create difficulties for public services and economic activity, but not of such a severity as to be a big problem for the NHS and the funeral business.
