You can think of vaccines working like seatbelts or airbags in cars, Vermund adds.

Having these protections in your car does not that mean you will not get into an accident. It also doesn’t ensure that if you are in a crash, you won’t get injured. However, you might walk away with minor injuries compared to what it would have been like if your car didn’t have them at all.

Researchers find that people who are vaccinated but get COVID-19 anyway tend to have a much milder illness compared to unvaccinated people.

Not 100% Effective Against Variants

Once you are fully vaccinated, you can still be infected. Weve always known this. While the vaccines developed against COVID are incredibly effective, they are not 100%. The CDC says the Pfizer and Moderna shots are about 95 percent effective, while the Johnson and Johnson shot is 66 percent. All three have been shown to work against the Delta variant, but at least one study out of Israel showed the effectiveness of the Pfizer vaccine dropped to 64 percent when it went up against this much more contagious variant.

Protection Against Transmission Wanes

The new study showed that protection against transmission seemed to wane over time, however. After three months, people who had breakthrough infections after being vaccinated with AstraZeneca were just as likely to spread the delta variant as the unvaccinated. While protection against transmission decreased in people who had received the Pfizer vaccine, there was still a benefit when compared with people who were unvaccinated.

Since antibody levels also tend to decrease over time after vaccination, a reduction in protection against transmission is to be expected, Richterman said.

We know that the amount of antibodies circulating in the blood decreases over time after vaccination, even though the immune memory remains durably robust and is still able to prevent infections, particularly severe infection, he said. These circulating antibodies that are immediately available probably play some role in preventing transmission if infected, so I dont think its surprising to see some reduced protection against transmission over time.

Richterman and Butler-Wu agreed that while community transmission remains high, masks and testing remain important.

We need to combine our vaccines with other measures to reduce how much virus we get exposed to by things like masking and testing, Butler-Wu said. Additive measures is the name of the game here.

Richterman agreed.

Both researchers describe themselves as “pro-vaccine,” especially given the dangers of COVID-19. Still they’re troubled by the reports they’ve collected that some people are having their concerns dismissed out of hand by doctors. That’s the sort of dismissiveness that can seed mistrust, Lee and Clancy note, and it’s happening in part, they believe, because changes to menstruation are not officially listed as a possible side effect.

Rumors of menstruation problems have also fed larger conspiracy theories, and Lee says that further undermines the vaccines’ credibility in some circles. “It seeds distrust, because it’s not expected,” she says.

Dr. Marc Boom, president and CEO of Houston Methodist, said that at his hospital, 90% of the patients with COVID-19 are unvaccinated. The small percentage of vaccinated patients who do end up hospitalized, he said, “have underlying significant health risks â like cancer, like transplants â that probably prevented them from mounting a full immune response to the vaccine.”

Even If You’re Young And Healthy It’s Still Important To Get Vaccinated

Although younger people are generally less likely to be hospitalized or to die from COVID-19, Wherry said that there’s been a recent uptick in young unvaccinated people getting very severe cases.

“Even if you are not worried about yourself getting sick, on average, every person with Delta spreads to … four to eight new people,” Wherry said. “Some of these folks you infect may not be as lucky as you. If they are also unvaccinated, for every 10 unvaccinated people who get Delta, they will infect 40 to 80 new unvaccinated people and send about four to eight people to the hospital.”

Wherry also emphasized that it’s important to consider the well-being of people who cannot yet be vaccinated, for various reasons age, cancer, immune deficiencies and are at high risk. “Young people do need to get vaccinated if not for themselves, for those around them,” Wherry said.

The number of people who are against getting a COVID-19 vaccine seems to be going up, even as ever more people get vaccinated. What do they base their arguments on?

Fair enough, I think. So let’s call them … Richard and Susanne.

I meet the pair in a park on the outskirts of Cologne. Richard works in the packaging industry, and Susanne works in administration at a hospital. Both are in their 50s, so they’re among the higher-risk groups for COVID-19.

We agree to meet because I would like to understand why they are against getting vaccinated. I, myself, have recovered from a COVID-19 infection, and am vaccinated.

I’ve written a lot about the virus and its vaccines. And I’ve been wondering: Why do some people not want to get vaccinated? What are their concerns? Where do they get their information, and how do they argue their case?

Vaccinated People Are Less Likely To Spread Covid New Research Finds

People who are vaccinated against Covid-19 are less likely to spread the virus even if they become infected, a new study finds, adding to a growing body of evidence that vaccines can reduce transmission of the delta variant.

British scientists at the University of Oxford examined national records of nearly 150,000 contacts that were traced from roughly 100,000 initial cases. The samples included people who were fully or partially vaccinated with either the Pfizer-BioNTech or the AstraZeneca vaccines, as well as people who were unvaccinated. The researchers then looked at how the vaccines affected the spread of the virus if a person had a breakthrough infection with either the alpha variant or the highly contagious delta variant.

Both vaccines reduced transmission, although they were more effective against the alpha variant compared to the delta variant. When infected with the delta variant, a given contact was 65 percent less likely to test positive if the person from whom the exposure occurred was fully vaccinated with two doses of the Pfizer vaccine. With AstraZeneca, a given contact was 36 percent less likely to test positive if the person from whom the exposure occurred was fully vaccinated.

The risk of transmission from a breakthrough infection was much higher if someone had received just dose of either vaccine.

Most People Who Catch Covid Are Exposed To Someone Who Has It

“COVID-19 spreads between people who are in close contact through respiratory droplets, created when someone talks, coughs or sneezes. Staying away from others helps stop the spread of COVID-19,” warns the CDC. If you know someone who may have COVID, or think you have it yourself, get tested ASAP and stay away from other people until you have a conclusive result. “Quarantine if you have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19, unless you have beenfully vaccinated. People who are fully vaccinated do NOT need to quarantine after contact with someone who had COVID-19 unless they have symptoms. However, fully vaccinated people should get tested 5-7 days after their exposure, even if they don’t have symptoms and wear a mask indoors in public for 14 days following exposure or until their test result is negative.”

Can Vaccinated People Spread The Virus

Yes, but how much is still a live question. Most studies use viral load as a measure of infectivity. Beyond a certain threshold, scientists expect you to be shedding enough virus to infect those around you. Numerous studies around the world, as well as the CDCs findings from the Massachusetts Cape Cod outbreak, have found vaccinated people who get infected appear to shed just as much virus as those who are not.

But its not a precise metric, Griffin says. Even measuring viral load from PCR test results isnt exact.

Thats why household transmission studies are also important, he says. They consider how many other cases someone with the virus has spawned. In April, a large study of UK households found that the risk of passing on the virus fell by about half when someone was vaccinated with the Pfizer and AstraZeneca shots. That study was conducted before the latest surge of the Delta variant, though, and its higher viral load is likely to make breakthrough infections more contagious. But the science here is still crystalising another study from June suggests vaccinated people may be infectious for shorter durations.

Public health officials have identified several new strains of the coronavirus, some of which are more contagious and could potentially be more lethal. Another concern experts have is that the vaccines wont protect against a new variant that emerges.

The most common variant, known as B.1.617.2 , was first discovered in India but is now circulating in a number of countries, including the U.S., where it is the dominant variant. The researchers behind the COSMO study say vaccination programs in workplaces or in the education sector may improve access to vaccination. In their report, the experts write that this would make it easier to reach groups of people who are in contact with lots of other people.

When I suggest that some employers may even want to make vaccination mandatory, Susanne and Richard get pensive.

“That would be a problem,” says Susanne, “Not everyone wants it, but it is conceivable that our employers might demand it. And if you refuse, they may see that as grounds to make you redundant or not extent your contract. They do that in Russia. It probably wouldn’t be legal here, but it is possible.”

“I could get vaccinated through my employer right now,” Susanne adds.

    The Threat Of The Delta Variant

    The Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus is spreading rapidly, nearly doubling cases every 10 days, Dowdy says. The variant is highly transmissible, causing spikes in hospitalizations in states with low vaccination rates.

    Because the Delta variant is more easily transmitted, Dowdy explains, vaccinated people are more likely to come into contact with unvaccinated people infected with the variant, leading to a breakthrough infection.

    Still, this variant doesn’t tell the whole story.

    It’s important to somewhat separate the Delta variant from just increased transmission as a whole, Dowdy says. The Delta variant has come on the scene, but at the same time we as a society have been living life a little more freely.”

    Many states have loosened protocols from the early days of the pandemiclike mask-wearing and social distancing. This summer, people are also gathering and traveling more.

    How much of the increase in infections is due to the Delta variant versus due to our behavior is not entirely known, but my bias is that it’s more due to our behavior than to the variant, Dowdy says, noting that other countries have been dealing with the Delta variant longer than the U.S., but have not had the same spike in deaths.
