Floridas Health Care System And Response Capacity

Do you have to live in Florida to get a COVID vaccine there?

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused massive, worldwide disruption. In addition to the millions infected and the hundreds of thousands killed, the virus has disrupted economies across the globe.

According to local media, Florida may be hiding the real pandemic situation. At this point, its endangering people, says Ryan Panchadsaram, former data official in the Obama administration. Were now in the third wave, and I think our only way out is really open, transparent and actionable information.

Florida has no travel restrictions in place as of today. However, The Florida Department of Health -recommends- wearing face masks if social distancing is not possible and avoid public gatherings of more than 10 people.;

These are recommendations, though. You will not be fined if you do not comply with them.;

Where And How To Get The Vaccine

Eligible Floridians now have access to COVID-19 vaccines at state-run sites and at hundreds of retail pharmacy locations. The Florida Department of Health has put together a website that allows people to find the nearest vaccine site to them.

Some major retailers in Florida are offering the vaccine. Click the links below for information:

Will I Need A Booster Shot

People whove received both doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines should plan to get a booster eight months after their second shot, pending federal approval, the Biden administration says. Boosters may be available for certain groups as early as Sept. 20.;A Johnson & Johnson booster could be approved later this year.;Federal officials have already;;of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for;specific immunocompromised people, including organ transplant recipients and certain cancer patients. The authorization does not apply to the J&J vaccine.;If you;are immunocompromised and think you are eligible;for a third shot, the CDC recommends talking with your health care provider about your medical condition, and whether getting an additional dose makes sense. You can make a third-dose appointment at the locations above or get a walk-in appointment at some pharmacies. Youll need the dates of your previous COVID-19;vaccinations when making an appointment for a third dose. You may also need to present proof of your medical condition.

Wealthy Vacationers And Vaccine Flights

Vaccine tourism is a murky business where theres often more hype than actual travel.

In January, reports emerged of British elites jetting off to the United Arab Emirates for month-long vaccine holidays that included two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine for a cool $55,670 .

And Zenith Holidays, an India-based travel company, has been advertising vaccine tours in the United States and the United Kingdom, the latter of which includes a 22-day package from $6,140 with availability and cost of vaccination subject to guidance from the National Health Service .

TPG inquired with Zenith about the vaccine tourism packages and was told they are still waiting for approval and guidance for vaccine tourism in overseas countries.

Most recently, Germanys flag carrier, Lufthansa, made headlines for reportedly devising a vaccine flight that would include doses of Russias Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine at the preexisting vaccination center at Moscow Domodedovo Airport currently open to airline employees, Russian citizens and foreigners with resident status in Russia Bne IntelliNews reported.

A source told the business media company that two round-trip flights to Moscow from Frankfurt for the vaccine would cost 1,000 euros , though transit visas would need to be arranged.;

Like everything else related to vaccine tourism, details are sketchy and hard to come by.

Which Vaccines Require A Second Shot

Ontario plans to vaccinate 8.5 million people with COVID ...

The;COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna;require two doses. If you get one of these, youll need a follow-up dose to be effectively immunized. The recommended second-shot date is three weeks after a first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and four weeks for Modernas, but the CDC says an interval of up to six weeks is acceptable. You should get a card from your provider saying when and where to return for the second dose. The state says it will send reminders via text, emails and phone calls. ;Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine requires just one shot. Federal officials warn that the vaccine has been connected with rare, severe blood clots in a small number of recipients, especially in women age 50 years and younger.

The Global Challenge Of Equitable Distribution

The United States has administered more than 46 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccines, according to CDC data, which means less than 15 percent of the population has had at least one injection.

The country is still a long way from getting out of the pandemic. But the United States has the capacity to buy up these doses, as do other wealthy countries. Together, the United States and other high-income countries have purchased nearly 3.8 billion vaccine doses, with options for another 5 billion, according to a study from Duke University.

Thats about enough to vaccinate everyone in the world, except those doses are in the hands of just a select few countries.

Indeed, the richest countries with 14 percent of the worlds population have bought up more than 53 percent of the vaccines most likely to be successful. This hoarding by rich countries means that people in the poorest countries will be waiting many, many months, and likely years, before they can get a Covid-19 vaccine dose.

Covax, a multilateral initiative, was set up to help develop, fund, and equitably distribute vaccines. Many lower-income countries are relying on the program, but it is short on funding and short on vaccines. Rich countries are backing this initiative, but so far, the majority have not yet dipped into their own stockpiles to contribute vaccines.

Not doing so will only prolong it, especially as new variants emerge. Were all going to suffer from this, Hynes said, and we are suffering from this.

Snowbirds face backlash in Florida for getting COVID-19 vaccines

ORLANDO, Fla. Lead nurse Corey Price at a state-run site at Hilton Orlando said you dont have to prove youre a Florida resident to get the COVID-19 vaccine there. You just need a valid ID or passport.

Being in a tourist district, he said hes seeing people from all over the world show up to get the shot.

Since were in Orlando near an international airport, were seeing people from all over the world: Colombia, Paraguay, I saw some people from Haiti the other day and some people from Japan, Price said.

Jahir Rivera, 28, and his friends visited from Colombia. They stopped by the vaccination site Tuesday and received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

For people my age its not available in my country. For me it would take a couple years more to get the shot. So I got it here, Rivera said.

Some people are traveling the world to protect themselves and their families.

We need to feel safe. Mainly because of our daughter of a year and a half, Miguel Herrera said. Im bringing my wife.

Some countries are seeing a slow rollout of the vaccine or supply shortages. Although the Florida health departments website said you must be a Florida resident or someone providing goods and services in the state to be eligible for the vaccine, the lead nurse at the Hilton Orlando vaccination site said no one has to prove their residency. He said they just need valid ID or passport to prove their age.

A few Orlando residents got the shot as well on Tuesday.

‘vaccination Vacations’ Already Starting

Some of the first “vaccination vacations” were by Canadians, who had second homes in Florida, said;Rosenberg.

“People who have second homes in the United States are either traveling back or staying in hotels in places like Florida where the vaccines are more prevalent and there are fewer restrictions,” said Rosenberg.;”There are also a lot of direct flights to Florida. The majority of people who are coming back are from Mexico or Canada.”

Rosenberg believes airports and hotels will be busy this year as people eagerly plan long-awaited getaways and regardless of vaccination.

At the same time, if vaccines become scarce, people may go to greater lengths to get them, including international flights.

The Cayman Islands, a self-governing British territory, has received enough vaccine to open supplies to all persons ages 16 and older, officials announced in March. The Caribbean paradise was “awash” in vaccines, the Times of London first reported in January,

Early on, Florida wasn’t restricting vaccine access to state residents. That changed mid-January amid concerns about out-of-state vacationers.

Neither the CDC nor the Pennsylvania Department of Health could be reached for comment.

Still, some travel agencies are advertising vaccine packages, although they do not promise that travelers will actually be able to receive a vaccine in the U.S. once they get here. Among them, Zenith Tours of India lists on its website “Vaccine Tourism.”

State Aims To Be Flexible With Residency Requirement

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. As South Florida works to increase the percentage of its population with COVID-19 vaccines, some are wondering how to include people who are living here temporarily or working in the state on a visa.

If they want to get herd immunity in the country here, everybody needs to be vaccinated, and we have people coming here on visas … they should make it available, says Raymond Dettmann, who reached out to Local 10 News after his adult stepdaughter visiting from Honduras on a visa was denied a dose at the federally funded vaccination site at Miami Dade College.

She was told she needed a Florida ID.

It just seems to make it so difficult for someone who wants to get a shot, Dettmann said.

Florida started requiring proof of residency in January to crack down on reports of vaccine tourism during a time of high demand and low supply. But now, supply has expanded, with anyone over 16 is eligible in the state, and demand has softened.

Local 10 News reached out to the Florida Division of Emergency Management, which said the needed proof of residency isnt just a drivers license or state-issued photo ID.

It can include:

  • Letter from landlord
  • Letter from a person youre staying with if a seasonal resident

After Local 10 reached out Tuesday, Dettmanns stepdaughter was able to get a shot this afternoon.

Dettmann spoke to Local 10 News again afterward:

Driving this, he said, is the Canadian governments pathetic rollout of the vaccine, which will force most seniors to wait until summer to get shots.

Most Canadian snowbirds stayed up north this year, he said. But of the 30% or so that did make their usual trips to Florida, many have been successful in getting vaccinations, and theyve told their friends still in Canada.

Floridas basically said if youre 65 and over you can get it.

But its unclear how many are actually doing this. While Canadians who were already in Florida by November are likely attempting to get vaccines, its not clear that anyones actually making a special trip to Florida to do so, said Evan Rachkovsky, spokesman for the Canadian Snowbird Association.

The Us Worried About Vaccine Tourists Now Its Encouraging Them

Some cities and states with a surplus of vaccines are helping foreign travelers get their shots to help boost the local economy.

Like many vaccine tourists, Alex doesnt want you to know his real name.;

The British expat arrived on a red-eye flight from his home in Nairobi, Kenya, at New Yorks John F. Kennedy International Airport on Friday, May 21, with the intention of staying just a few daysmore than enough time, he hoped, to get a dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.;

Alex had been thinking about how to get vaccinated for weeks. Kenya has received only enough donated doses to vaccinate roughly 1% of its population, and while he would be eligible in the United Kingdom, getting shots there would be very complicated: a 14-day quarantine in a designated hotel upon arrival, registration with a local doctor, another 14-day quarantine upon his return to Kenya, and then likely a repeat of the whole process three or four months later for a second shot, since the one-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine has not yet been approved in the UK.;

The US, on the other hand, has no quarantine requirements and its vaccine supply has outstripped demand since April. After hearing first that a British couple he was friends with had successfully gotten their shot in Colorado, and then that New York City had plans to vaccinate travelers at popular tourist sites, Alex applied for his visa and booked his flight.;

Florida allows COVID-19 vaccine access to snowbirds

Governors across the United States are speeding up eligibility for coronavirus vaccines as the number of new cases nationally plateaus, adding more urgency to vaccination efforts.

California will open up vaccine eligibility on April 1 to any resident who is 50 or older, and will expand that to residents 16 or older on April 15, state officials announced on Thursday, saying they could do so because of increasing supplies of vaccine from the federal government. And Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida announced that any state resident who is 40 or older would be eligible starting on Monday, and that the minimum age would drop to 18 on April 5.

In Connecticut, which is among the most-vaccinated states in the country, Gov. Ned Lamont said Thursday that all residents 16 and above would be eligible beginning April 1. New Hampshire will make shots available to all residents 16 and older starting April 2, and North Carolina on April 7. In Rhode Island, Gov.
