Jamie Alan, PhD, an associate professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University, tells Verywell that people can absolutely exercise before getting vaccinated against COVID-19. If you have no contraindicationsto work out, to begin with, then it is safe to work out before your COVID-19 vaccine, she adds.
Stacey Rose, MD, assistant professor of internal medicine and infectious diseases at the Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, agrees. I am not aware of any contraindications for physical activity before COVID-19 vaccination, she tells Verywell.
Experts say there really arent any potential issues with exercising before you are vaccinated, although they suggest being mindful of your limits. You don’t want to injure yourself and then have to miss your vaccine appointment, Watkins says.
While you can do any exercise after being vaccinated, Rose says its probably better to exercise using the muscles where the vaccine is given to lessen any discomfort you may feel at the injection site like arm soreness. She suggests resistance band exercises or body-weight exercises that use your arms, noting they might be a better idea than going for a run.
Exercise Can Prevent Sore Arms
The most commonly cited post-vaccine side effect is soreness in the arm where the vaccine was injected.
Some people have reported a slight soreness similar to after getting the flu shot, while others have said they can’t move their arm due to the pain.
The sensation is a result of immune cells reacting to the vaccine, Dr. Daniel Summers, a pediatrician in Maine, told Insider.
Since the arm is where the vaccine originates, immune cells rush to that area and inflame it, making it look red and feel tender. Moving your arm throughout the day, whether through exercise or shimmying around your living room, can relieve the intensity of arm tenderness.
“By moving the arm, it helps disperse that local area of inflammation faster,” Summers said.
On the flip side, simply massaging the vaccine site with your hand could worsen inflammation and pain.
“It’s not going to have any truly negative effects to rub the vaccine site immediately after you get the shot, but since doing so may disperse the vaccine material into a larger area that will then become inflamed as the immune system responds, you’ll have a larger area that’s sore,” said Summers.
Arm soreness should dissipate one or two days after getting the jab, according to Summers.

SINGAPORE: Strenuous activities such as swimming, cycling and running should be avoided for one week after the first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccination, the Ministry of Health said in its latest advisory.
Jogging, lifting heavy weights, competitive sports, physical education as well as ball and racket games should also be avoided.
Physical activities that are deemed safe include stretching or working while standing, casual walking and housework, said MOH.;
The Health Ministrys latest advisory follows an updated recommendation on Monday which advised those who have been vaccinated to avoid exercise or strenuous physical activity for a week after any dose of the jab.
On Tuesday, an MOE spokesperson told CNA that schools and institutes of higher learning have been excusing students from physical activity for one week after receiving their COVID-19 vaccination, whether it is for the first or second dose.;
“All physical education and co-curricular activity teachers check in with students before the start of these activities,” said the spokesperson.
MOE has also advised all parents and students to be mindful of any potential side effects from the vaccination – particularly if they were to develop chest pain, shortness of breath or abnormal heartbeats. These students should seek medical attention promptly.

Some experts are suggesting that you skip your daily sweat session in the two hours before and after you sit down for your shot. Rob Simon, MD, allergist and immunologist at the Scripps Clinic, told CBS News 8 that vigorous exercise right after the shot could potentially affect the flow of the vaccine. Once the shot is delivered into your muscle, “you want that vaccine to come out of the muscle into your bloodstream to start to educate your immune system at a certain ratethe rate at which was studied in the clinical trials.” When you exercise vigorously, your heart rate could rise and thereby “increase your blood flow to that muscle and take it out of the muscles faster than it was originally designed to,” Simon explained. Regular aerobic or moderate exercise in weeks and months prior to Covid-19 vaccination can help improve antibody responses post vaccination in older people, according to researchers at Trinity College Dublin.
The recommendation is outlined in a report by scientists leading the on-going Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing . Adults aged 60 and older should consistently incorporate some form of exercise such as a brisk walk at least two to three times per week prior to vaccination, they conclude.
As vaccination of the Irish population is rolled out, it is critically important that lessons from previous vaccination programmes among older adults are used to inform current efforts, their report says.
Vaccine efficacy in older adults can be a challenge due to ageing effects on the immune system. As people age, ability to produce robust antibody responses following vaccination declines; they are less likely to generate long-term protection often required for full immunity to a virus.
Tilda researchers evaluated information on flu vaccine uptake and health behaviours which govern vaccine efficacy, ahead of rollout of the Covid-19 vaccine for older adults.

So it may be a good idea to reschedule a session of heavy exercise for another day after having the vaccine.
Dr Hull added: Light exercise is fine but we generally recommend avoiding very hard exercise in the 48 hours post vaccination.

In addition, you may want to have any management medications on hand when you return to exercise, such as an inhaler, an EpiPen, or Benadryl .
If you experience hives, swelling, or wheezing after getting the vaccine, contact a doctor. You may want to avoid vigorous exercise until you know how your body reacts to the vaccine, especially if you have existing respiratory issues.
