Airlines Are Aiding With Testing
So far, four airlines have announced plans to manage the testing element of a trip to Hawaii.
This list will likely expand in terms of routes and participating airlines. For now, those traveling on United via San Francisco , Hawaiian Airlines via sites near Los Angeles or SFO, Alaska Airlines out of Seattle or American Airlines out of DFW can lean into the airlines testing systems.
United has partnered with GoHealth Urgent Care at SFO, and testing will be available from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily to offer rapid tests to Uniteds Hawaii-bound passengers for a price of $250 per person.
Alternatively, United flyers can take an $80 mail-in test from Color. The airline recommends that travelers begin the process 10 days before their travel, and collect a sample no more than 72 hours in advance of their trip. It is then returned via overnight mail or a dropbox at SFO. Results will then arrive via email and text within 24- to 48 hours. This means you may have some period of quarantine in Hawaii before results are received.
Hawaiian Airlines is partnering with Worksite Labs to provide drive-through PCR testing near both Los Angeles International Airport and San Francisco International Airport . Worksite Labs will offer the Droplet Digital PCR shallow nasal swab test for $90, with results within 36 hours, or you can expedite at a cost of $150 for day-of-travel express service.
Hawaiian has said it expects to roll similar testing out to other U.S. gateways soon.

Travelling To Hawaii Is Tricky For Canadians
The planned opening of the U.S. border to fully vaccinated Canadians may have you thinking more about travelling, but it could still be a bumpy ride.
If you’re fully vaccinated, you won’t need a negative COVID-19 test to travel by land to the U.S., but if you’re travelling by air you will need proof of both.
In addition, it is still unclear whether those who received mixed vaccine doses that included AstraZeneca will be considered fully vaccinated. And, no matter where you are going in the U.S. or elsewhere, the rules can change.
“Biggest frustration is a lack of consistency,” said Allison Wallace, Flight Centre Group vice president of corporate communications.
“I was getting misleading answers or no answers,” said Mel Kimoto of Parksville.
Kimoto is a former travel agent who was planning to travel to Hawaii in early October to celebrate her husband’s 50th birthday, but her plans were grounded when she says she couldn’t get clear answers about COVID-19 travel rules in Hawaii.
Safe Travels Hawaii has special requirements for Canadians travelling to the Islands to get tested at labs identified by Air Canada and WestJet. Those negative COVID-19 tests must be the more sensitive and accurate PCR tests, not the antigen test that will get you into the rest of the U.S.
What Kimoto didn’t know is that she can’t get a test at one of those labs and use the test result to fly on a different airline into Hawaii.
She gave up and cancelled the trip.

Covid Entry Test Hawaii For Canadian
I am trying to plan a trip to Hawaii and I am very confused about the whole covid testing requirements. There are no trusted test partners near my town. They are all closer to Toronto which is 3+ hrs away. Can I use a regular local PCR test from a non-trusted partner?. Or does it have to be a trusted partner.? Even then which test is required? I notice online there are multiple PCR, rapid PCR, antigen and rapid tests options? I am fully vaccinated.

IF you are flying directly from Canada to Hawaii you need to be vaccinated and have a covid test. Antigen, PCR, it doesn’t matter. You do NOT need it to be from a Trusted Partner.
IF you fly from Canada the to the mainland US then to Hawaii the requirements are different.
Thank you. Your response helped. I was frustrated trying to find a trusted test partner . I am flying from Canada straight to Hawaii. No USA stops.
Fishdiva – you have been most helpful on these boards so I am going to ask you a direct question:
Can I assume that if I am flying from Canada to the US Mainland and then on to the Big Island – as per the info on the Safe Travels website – besides getting an Antigen test to get into the US – all I have to do is upload my Canadian Vaccine Record into Safe Travels and then fill out the questionnaire 24 hours before I leave to Kona?

Positive Test Or Covid
You should self-isolate and delay your travel if you develop symptoms or your pre-departure test result is positive until you have recovered from COVID-19. Airlines must refuse to board anyone who does not present a negative test result for COVID-19 or documentation of recovery.
If you know or suspect that you have COVID-19, you should self-isolate and NOT travel until you have met CDCs criteria for discontinuing isolation.
If you are not fully vaccinated and have had close contact with a person with COVID-19 , you should self-quarantine and NOT travel until you have met criteria for discontinuing quarantine. If you are fully vaccinated, or have documentation of recovery from COVID-19 in the past 90 days, you do not have to self-quarantine after exposure to a person with COVID-19 and can travel unless you have COVID-19 symptoms.

Traveling To Hawaii During Covid
What are the requirements for flying into and visiting Hawaii?
If youve been fully vaccinated, you are welcome in with no restrictions. Unvaccinated visitors from the U.S. mainland are allowed to avoid quarantine if they test negative for COVID-19 within 72 hours prior to the departure time of the final leg of their flight to Hawaii. Test must be administered by a trusted partner .
If, by chance, your test results are not available by the time you depart that final leg, you will have to be quarantined in your hotel room for 5 days, so dont fly if you dont have your negative results in hand.
All the latest updates from the state can be found at
Flying is the only way to reach the Aloha State for the time being.
What are the steps I need to take to avoid quarantine in Hawaii?
Do any airlines/airports provide testing?
Note that the document must clearly show:
Four : Upload Proof Of Covid
Currently returning Hawaii residents and vaccinated travelers from the mainland U.S. will not need to participate in the pre-travel testing or the 10-day mandatory quarantine.
You will still have to upload images of your vaccination card to your Safe Travels and fill out all forms properly. Just bringing your vaccination card with you will not be enough. If you do not complete the necessary steps in the Safe Travels account, you will have a long wait to exit the airport while a Hawaii airport screener assists you.
- Travelers eligibility begins no sooner than the 15th day after your final vaccination dose.
- Travelers must upload a good quality PDF or image file of your CDC COVID-19 vaccination card, SMART Health Card with your vaccine record , VAMS printout or DOD Form DD 2766C to their Safe Travels account.
- Refer to HVCBs Step-by-Step How to Upload a Vaccine Card instructions.
- Please only upload the side that includes your name, date of birth, and vaccination information.
- Complete ALL forms required in your Safe Travels account BEFORE you depart to Hawaii.
- Upon arrival at the airport, travelers must have their CDC Vaccination Record Card, VAMS printout, VAMS printout or certificate, DD 2766C or vaccination source document available to show the screeners either at your boarding gate or once you have arrived in Hawaii .

Direct International Travel To Hawaii
- Non-U.S. citizens who are traveling directly to Hawaii from an international destination must present both proof of vaccination AND a negative COVID-19 testresult taken within three days of boarding a flight to the United States according to the U.S. federal regulations.
- U.S. citizens who are flying directly to Hawaii from an international destination will have two options:
Other than the requirements listed above, there will be no additional State of Hawaii requirements for passengers flying directly into Hawaii from an international destination.
Airlines will screen passengers at the airport prior to their departure to the U.S.
If foreign passengers fail to meet both requirements, or if U.S. citizens fail to meet one of the two requirements, you will not be allowed to board the flight.
Please note that international travelers do NOT need to be tested by Trusted Travel Partners specified by the State of Hawaii under the new international federal requirements, and will ONLY be required for unvaccinated domestic travelers.
How To Get Tested Near Your Location
Testing Performed by the Airlines
- The state of Hawaii has partnered with several airlines/airports to provide pre-travel testing to Hawaii. The airlines themselves are not individually performing the tests but have instead partnered with local labs in their main West Coast hubs who offer flights directly to Hawaii. However, this option really only works well for travelers who can get tested before arriving at the respective airport, as anyone with a connecting flight would have to leave security to get tested.
- Currently, the only in terminal option for testing is at San Francisco Airport but you will likely pay a hefty amount for the convenience, about $250 per traveler. Additionally, Hawaiian Airlines has announced it is offering drive-thru testing to its passengers departing from San Francisco International Airport , but the test site is located 10 miles from the airport, so that option again will not work for travelers with connecting flights.
