Pack An Approved Self Test
If youd like to skip the process of finding a test altogether, you can bring a CDC-approved self test that you take over a video call with real-time supervision from a telehealth service.
One option is the Detect coronavirus test that uses the same technology as a PCR lab test and delivers results in about an hour. A kit costs $75 for $20 extra, travelers can purchase a video observation session so the test can meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requirement.
Last summer, I went with this option for a trip to Europe with the BinaxNOW kit . The night before my flight home to the United States, I downloaded the required app, followed the instructions and took the test while a telehealth professional walked me through it over a video call.
The testing process took about 25 minutes, plus another 30 minutes to wait for the results
Once the results were ready, another telehealth professional came on the line to help interpret the results. We determined it was negative, and soon I received an email confirmation that I could show the airline the next day.
Flying To Mexico During Covid
To travel to Mexico now, foreign citizens need to meet all regular entry requirements and complete a health declaration form.
Depending on nationality, passengers may need one or more of the following documents:
- Visa for Mexico
- Mexico Tourist Card
- COVID-19 health questionnaire
Tourists and business visitors from more than 60 countries, including EU nations, can stay in Mexico without a visa for up to 180 days. Visitors should confirm their visa requirements and apply for the relevant permit.
Be Prepared For Your Plans To Change
No travel is risk-free during COVID. Countries may further restrict travel or bring in new rules at short notice, for example due to a new COVID-19 variant. Check with your travel company or airline for any transport changes which may delay your journey home.
If you test positive for COVID-19, you may need to stay where you are until you test negative. You may also need to seek treatment there.
Plan ahead and make sure you:
- can access money
- understand what your insurance will cover
- can make arrangements to extend your stay and be away for longer than planned

Can Us Citizens Travel To Mexico Right Now
Mexico is still open to visitors. You wont need to provide a negative PCR test or quarantine upon arrival. Most resorts, however, ask guests to fill out health questionnaires. Also, you will need to go through health screenings at the airports. If Covid-19 symptoms are detected, you will be tested and may be subjected to a mandatory quarantine.
As before, US citizens do not need a visa to travel to Mexico.
The land border between the US and Mexico was reopened to non-essential traffic on November 8th, 2021, and has remained open since.
What Does The Travel Industry Think Of The Testing Rules
On Friday, American Airlines CEO Robert Isom called testing requirements “nonsensical” adding that they were “depressing” leisure and business travel.
Isom met with US politicians on Thursday to discuss the issue, saying that 75 per cent of countries the airline flies to do not have testing requirements.
We’re really frustrated and this is something that is damaging not only US travel but it just doesn’t make sense.
“We’re really frustrated and this is something that is damaging not only US travel but it just doesn’t make sense,” he said.
Airlines for America chief Nick Calio added that requirement is harming the US economy. The trade association says that, while domestic travel has nearly recovered to pre-pandemic levels, international trips are still 14 per cent lower than normal.
“Quite frankly, the only impact the pre-departure testing requirement is having is a chilling effect on an already fragile economy here in the US,” Calio explained.
In May, more than 260 travel firms signed a letter to the White House demanding an urgent repeal of the pre-departure testing rule.
It is time for the Biden administration to lead the country toward a new normal for travel and on a faster road to a full economic recovery, according to the letter from the US Travel Association .
We are always reviewing our guidance and new science that becomes available, a spokesperson for the CDC told Euronews Travel in response to a question on when the entry rules are likely to ease.

What Is The Mexico Tourist Card
Most visitors arriving in Mexico by air are required to fill out the Mexico Tourist Card – Air as previously advised. This travel document collects some information about your medical history and your intended stay in Mexico. Although it is popularly known as a tourist visa, the Tourist Card is not officially a visa and does not replace one in any way.
If your country requires a visa, youll need to verify that and present it when you arrive. You can do this using our Visa Checker.

Aeromexico And Covid Test
When I flew to Nicaragua by Aeromexico from Mexico I needed to present one at the check-in because Nicaragua requires travelers coming have a negative result.
One more please. I saw covid test facilities in Mexico City international airport. I plan to use it when I land for my connecting flight to America. Is it antigen test, if so, can I get a result pretty fast? Do you know the price and how busy it is?
Thank you in advance.

Flying directly into Mexico City, you do not need a covid-19 test. But, as you mentioned, if you are flying from Mexico to the USA you will need either an antigen or RT-PCR test . You can get it at the airport, as you mentioned.
Here’s the procedures I encountered at the the Mexico City airport for my visit to the US, where I needed a covid test.
This is great! Thank you so much AA for posting the step by step procedures.
One thing, I am not familiar with a QR thing. Do I need to download some app to do that?
On your smartphone, just down load the app called “QR & Barcode Scanner”. That exact one worded just like that, and when you get to the airport covid testing area, you just open that app and let the app take a photo of the QR photo at the entrance to the testing site. Point the active app camera at the QR code that the attendant will tell you to. After that it’s easy as pie. Very quick and painless process. They are very professional. Good luck!

What To Do With Your Results
For my American Airlines flight back from Mexico, I wasnt allowed to check-in until I uploaded a photo of my coronavirus test result into an app called VeriFLY, which stores your required documents for travel. I sent in my results, had them approved hours later and completed the standard American Airlines check-in process.
Not all airlines use so-called vaccine passports such as VeriFLY. You may be asked to provide a paper or electronic copy of your test results to airline personnel at the airport.
After a six-hour layover at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, the second leg of my journey home from Mexico was canceled with no other options to fly that evening. Should you be one of the many unlucky travelers whose flights into the United States are canceled and rescheduled for the next day, you will need to be retested to meet the CDC requirement. Should you be one of the even unluckier travelers to test positive abroad, you wont be allowed to fly back until youve completely recovered from the illness.

When Is The Us Dropping Pre
Pressure is mounting on the US to lift all COVID travel restrictions, with airlines stepping up their efforts to get the Biden administration to drop pre-departure testing.
Currently, nearly all passengers have to take a test within one day of their journey. Most unvaccinated foreigners are completely banned from entry.
But with a busy summer season around the corner, how long will these strict measures hold?
Travel Industry Calling For Fewer Restrictions
Leaders in the U.S. travel and tourism industry have been calling on U.S. President Joe Bidens administration to consider easing some of its health measures at the border, to bring them in line with the looser requirements seen in the U.K. and the EU.
Last month, the U.S. Travel Association sent an open letter to the White House, requesting the administration remove the pre-entry testing requirement for all fully vaccinated travellers.
“Removing the pre-departure testing requirement will incentivize vaccination, increase demand for international travel to and from the U.S., and better align passenger aviation entry requirements with those at U.S. land border points of entry and other major travel-trade partners abroad,” the letter states.
The Biden administration last month also extended its mask mandate on airplanes through April 18. The U.S. Travel Association is asking the White House to let the mandate expire.
During a press briefing last Wednesday, White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield said “conversations are underway” when asked whether the White House is prepared to ease travel restrictions.
“Certainly, when we have news to make on this, well come back to you,” she told reporters.

Other Important Things To Know
Mexico asks that tourists wear face masks in public settings, social distance and follow its Covid-19 prevention guidelines as much as possible. You can access these guidelines here.
While not federally mandated, some states and even cities may require masks to be worn at all times. A federal curfew is also not mandated, but some states in Mexico do enforce a curfew. Interstate travel throughout Mexico can be restricted in some cities depending on the current situation.
Finally, make sure to keep track of Mexicos Covid-19 monitoring system during your travels. Mexico uses a system of color-coded labels to let the public know the risk level, and ultimately, the restrictions implemented. You can access the list of restrictions here.
Travel With Unvaccinated Children
Unvaccinated children under 12 years and 4 months of age dont require a COVID-19 test to travel within or depart Canada. International destinations may have different requirements.
If your child has just turned 12, there is a 4-month exemption period following their 12th birthday in which they wont be required to be vaccinated or tested. This gives children the time to receive both shots of the COVID-19 vaccine.
For example, if your child’s 12th birthday is in January, the child can travel in January through April without providing proof of vaccination or a test result. In May, the child would be required to provide proof of vaccination.
