What To Know About International Travel Testing Requirements
Nearly every country now requires a negative COVID-19 test and/or proof of vaccination for entry. Each destination has its own testing requirements, and some can be quite complicated, so you’ll want to check ahead of time to make sure you have what you need before you go.
As of Dec. 6, 2021, all travelers to the United States from any foreign country are required to show a negative COVID-19 viral test result taken no more than one day before travel in order to board your flight. Alternatively, you can show documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 in the past 90 days. These requirements are in place for every traveler, regardless of citizenship or vaccination status.
White House Says No Intention To Require Covid
3 Min Read
WASHINGTON – The White House said on Friday it was not planning to require people to take COVID-19 tests before domestic airline flights after the prospect of new rules raised serious concerns among U.S. airlines, unions and some lawmakers.
White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said at a briefing on Friday that reports that there is an intention to put in place new requirements, such as testing, are not accurate.
Late on Friday, a spokeswoman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, at this time, CDC is not recommending required point of departure testing for domestic travel. She added the CDC will continue to review public health options for containing and mitigating spread of COVID-19 in the travel space.
CDC said last month the agency was actively looking at expanding mandatory COVID-19 testing to U.S. domestic flights.
Psaki spoke after the chief executives of major U.S. airlines, including American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, met virtually with White House COVID-19 response coordinator Jeff Zients.
The CDC on Jan. 26 began requiring negative COVID-19 tests or evidence of recovery from the disease from nearly all U.S.-bound international passengers aged 2 and older.
The White House and officials told Reuters this week that no formal order had been circulated and that officials were not expected to endorse requiring negative COVID-19 tests before domestic flights.

If you’re traveling internationally, whether a COVID-19 test is required largely depends on your destination as rules and regulations vary widely. The CDC strongly recommends that people don’t leave the country until they’re fully vaccinated.
All air passengers coming into the U.S. from another country, including U.S. citizens and fully vaccinated individuals, are required to have a negative COVID-19 test result no more than three days before a given trip or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 in the past three months.
The testing requirement doesn’t require to children under 2 years old.
Unvaccinated people are encouraged to undergo a viral test 1-3 days before their trip when traveling inside the country as well as internationally, the CDC said. Along with social distancing and washing their hands often, unvaccinated individuals should get tested using a viral test 3-5 days after returning home, the agency added.
Even those who receive negative test results are advised to stay home and self-quarantine for the full recommended period of seven days.
Major U.S. airlines have also created guidance to help passengers determine whether their trip requires a negative COVID-19 test result and what other precautions, if any, are necessary.
Chicago-based United Airlines offers testing options to customers flying on certain routes and to select destinations, the company said on its website, adding it “continues to explore more ways to make COVID-19 testing more accessible.”
American Airlines Coronavirus Testing
American Airlines was among the first airlines to introduce testing as part of the preflight process, and currently offers at-home and in-person testing for its passengers. You will upload your test results to VeriFLY, a secure mobile app which helps streamline this and other AA preflight travel requirements.
American Airlines does not require COVID-19 testing for domestic flights, although the CDC recommends unvaccinated travelers get tested one to three days before traveling. Check local government regulations before domestic travel to determine if a test is required.
For international flights, testing requirements vary depending on the location. Make sure you check American Airlines’ website and your destination’s tourism board prior to your trip. Some places require a negative test result within 72 hours of departure, while others have a seven-day window.
Its Confirmed: Biden Tightens Covid Testing Restrictions For Travelers Entering The Us
Unlike the previous requirements, which allowed for a longer timetable for vaccinated travelers, this new requirement will treat all passengers the same, regardless of vaccination status. As is currently the case, either a PCR or antigen test will be accepted as proof of being negative for Covid-19.
The test requirements include taking it within one calendar day and is not limited to within 24 hours of your departure. This means that passengers will be able to take their test at any time during the day before their flight, no matter what time their flight departs.
There are no new quarantine restrictions at this time.

Is An Airplane Really As Low Risk As An Operating Room
Its safe on board, safer than an operating room, said Deborah Flint, the chief executive of Greater Toronto Airports Authority, during one of the air summits panels.
This line paraphrases a finding in a widely recognized study, conducted by the Defense Department and published last October, which found that air circulation systems in two types of large Boeing aircraft were even better at filtering out airborne particles than the filtration systems recommended for most hospital operating rooms.
Other research has also reinforced that air in a typical cabin is refreshed every two to three minutes, inhibiting the transmission of the coronavirus. But the risk of transmission increases when passengers fail to properly wear masks, Dr. Lin H. Chen, the former president of theInternational Society of Travel Medicine noted.
Even with a federal mask mandate, some people while on board do and will refuse to wear masks properly. Others cannot wear them for medical reasons, because they are too young or because they are eating or drinking. But even assuming everyone age 2 and above airlines standard age for mask requirements is properly wearing one, experts still dont know how new variants are changing the equation, said Dr. David Freedman, a professor of infectious diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Delta is much more transmissible, he said.

Both the country and the airlines themselves clearly know why vaccines matter, the value of mandates and how to verify vaccination before travel. A universal vaccine mandate for international and domestic air travel would be an important step forward in making flying safer for all of us, in so many ways.
Especially in the face of omicron, we need all the protection we can get to keep our economy moving and our country healthy.

Do I Need To Get A Covid Test Before I Enter The United States
Yes. All passengers aged 2 and over are required to show proof of a negative Covid-19 test to their airline taken within one day of their flight departure to the United States. Non-U.S. citizens who are visiting must also show proof of being vaccinated before entering the country.
If youre a U.S. citizen or legal resident that recently recovered from Covid-19, you can travel with documentation proving your recovery .
Unlike the previous requirements, which allowed for a longer testing timetable for vaccinated travelers, this new requirement requires all passengers entering the country to get tested. Only those who are not U.S. citizens or legal residents need to show proof of vaccination.
Its important to note that the test requirements include taking it within one calendar day and is not limited to within 24 hours of your departure. This means that youll be able to take your test at any time during the day before your flight, no matter what time your flight departs.
Either a PCR or antigen test will be accepted as proof of being negative for Covid-19. The CDC requires the test to be authorized for use by the relevant national authority for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in the country where the test is administered.
This may mean an over-the-counter at-home test bought in a foreign country wont qualify. It may also mean that you have to get an antigen test in person, conducted by a licensed professional.

Airlines Had Opposed Such A Measure Cdc Reiterated Guidance That Americans Refrain From Travel
Covid-19 testing at Los Angeles International Airport in December. Airlines had supported international-travel testing rules, but balked at mandatory testing before domestic flights.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday it wont currently recommend mandatory Covid-19 testing before domestic air travel, a proposal it had been weighing but met with strong objections from the airline industry.
At this time, CDC is not recommending required point of departure testing for domestic travel, the CDC said. As part of our close monitoring of the pandemic, in particular the continued spread of variants, we will continue to review public health options for containing and mitigating spread of COVID-19 in the travel space.

Domestic Air Travel Could Soon Require Covid
Plan your holiday travel accordingly
Up until this point, there has been no movement toward requiring air passengers traveling domestically to provide proof of vaccination or proof of a negative Covid-19 test prior to boarding a plane. That might change if Sen. Dianne Feinstein has her way. On Wednesday, Feinstein introduced legislation that would require passengers to present either proof of Covid-19 vaccination, proof of a recent negative Covid-19 test, or proof that you already had Covid-19 and recovered before you can board a domestic aircraft.
The move would come just in time for a busy holiday travel season and will surely cause some to reconsider their plans if it becomes law.
Sen. Feinstein announced her proposal this week in a tweet saying that the bill would help stem the tide of potential Covid spread which occurred during the winter season of 2020 as holiday travel reached its peak:
We cant allow upcoming holiday air travel to contribute to another surge in COVID cases. Today I introduced legislation requiring passengers on domestic flights to be vaccinated, test negative or be fully recovered from a previous COVID illness.
Senator Dianne Feinstein
The bill would require the Department of Health and Human Services to work with the FAA on creating a workable solution:
Should There Be A Vaccine Mandate For Domestic Flights
Boston Medical Center’s Dr. Davidson Hamer and Dr. Daniel Kuritzkes of Brigham and Women’s Hospital agreed that airline personnel should be vaccinated, but warned that a similar mandate for passengers could be problematic.
Dr. Shira Doron, of Tufts Medical Center, said the question of whether or not to require a vaccine in that setting is an ethical discussion that “needs to be had.” The panel of doctors pointed out that the risk of transmission is always less when people are vaccinated.
“There has been some miscommunication about the idea that vaccinated people can transmit as much as unvaccinated people — that’s not true and that’s been disproven within multiple studies,” Doron said. “On a scientific level, it is true that when you have a gathering of people in close quarters and they’re all vaccinated, the risk is less.”
However, the doctors noted that mask mandates already in place on airlines are an effective way to reduce transmission.
Hamer agreed that it is “really important” for forward-facing airline personnel to get vaccinated due to the high volume of interaction and contact with others inherent in the job.

By the holiday season, flying will have changed dramatically for Americans returning to the United States from abroad. They will be asked to show proof that they are vaccinated, to commit to two coronavirus tests if they are not and to participate in a new contact tracing system.
For Americans traveling within the United States, however, none of this applies. As airlines prepare for whats expected to be the biggest travel rush of the past two years, domestic travel aside from a mask mandate and some restrictions on alcohol will be largely the same as it was before the pandemic: packed cabins and no testing or proof of vaccination required.
Whether this is a symptom of denial or a sign of progress depends on who you ask. Senator Dianne Feinstein, Democrat of California, recently telegraphed her position when she proposed a bill that would require passengers on domestic flights to be fully vaccinated, to have recently tested negative or to have a certificate of recovery from the virus.
Norwegian Cruise Line Royal Caribbean Cancel Trips Amid Rising Covid
Vaccines clearly work at stopping infection and transmission. They have been safely administered to billions of people around the world. Every high-quality study, even on the delta and the omicron variants, makes clear that all of the approved vaccines in the United States decrease risk of symptomatic infection, severe disease and death . And nothing speeds dissemination of a new variant, like putting people on airplanes and sending them to new parts of the country or the world.
Moreover, our country, and our administration, recognize the importance of vaccine mandates in getting us back to normal. Some of the airlines themselves mandate vaccines for workers, to decrease illness and improve workplace safety. . President Joe Biden has worked with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to develop vaccine or testing mandates for large businesses and health care facilities, although the fates of some of those mandates are pending before the Supreme Court. Dr. Anthony Fauci himself acknowledges that vaccine mandates work at improving vaccination rates. Federal vaccine mandates are ethical and legal, according to many legal scholars.
And the United States has already mandated proof of vaccination for all non-U.S. citizens prior to international travel. It defies logic to think that non-U.S. citizens are somehow at higher risk of contracting or transmitting SARS-CoV-2 than those who are citizens of the U.S.
