Travelers Scramble For Covid Tests Ahead Of Holiday Rush

  • Despite omicron, airlines are expecting some of their busiest days of the Covid pandemic during the year-end holidays.
  • New travel rules since omicron was detected late last month have complicated international trips.
  • Many travelers need Covid tests in order to fly to certain countries, including the U.S.

Travelers are scrambling for Covid tests ahead of holiday trips, facing long lines and longer waits for results.

Lines for coronavirus testing at some walk-in clinics in New York wrapped around the block on Tuesday. Pharmacies ran out of at-home tests. Walgreens limited purchases of at-home tests to four per customer. CVS Health capped them at six per person.

XpresCheck, which offers testing at several major U.S. airports, said it’s not running out of tests but it has hit appointment capacity during certain periods of the day, Doug Satzman, CEO of parent company XpresSpa, said by email.

The White House on Tuesday said the government will buy 500 million Covid tests that people can order for free online, starting in January. But the testing crunch is already upending some holiday plans.

Britt Groosman, an economist and program manager at the Environmental Defense Fund, canceled her family’s Christmas vacation to see their relatives in Belgium and the U.K. because of the rampant omicron variant and difficultly getting test results. It would have been their first time spending the holiday there in two years, she said.

What Travelers Should Know About Covid

Traveling around the U.S. these days is no longer just a matter of hopping a flight. Because of the nationwide surge in COVID-19 cases, almost a dozen states now require airline passengers to quarantine for 14 days as soon as they touch down.

To encourage passengers to brave these obstacles as well as to boost their sagging revenue major U.S. airlines are offering preflight COVID-19 tests. The tests are voluntary and cost anywhere from $70 to $150. Some tests can be done at home, while others are available at the airport. Results are provided in a few days.

Airlines offering tests still require passengers to wear a mask, observe social distancing rules and practice other safety measures. Each carrier has a slightly different process for administering tests, but all encourage passengers to be tested within 72 hours of boarding. Here’s what what you need to know about different airlines’ coronavirus testing services.

American Airlines Flies 40000 Passengers To The Us And Prepares For More As Borders Open

American Airlines welcomed 150 international flights Monday as the U.S. opened its borders to non-citizens who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

“We’re seeing fantastic demand, 40,000 customers are coming inbound to the U.S. today,” American Airlines President Robert Isom told Yahoo Finance Live.

“People want to get out on the road,” Isom said, predicting the surge to continue well into 2022. “There are families and grandparents that haven’t seen, you know, children in a long time. Business people that really want to get out and make contact with customers, you know, it’s all over the place.”

New CDC guidelines require non-citizen travelers to provide proof they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to boarding a flight to the U.S. All passengers, including U.S. citizens, are required to test negative for COVID-19 within three days of a flight’s departure.

American, like other airlines provides tools on its website and app to help passengers comply with the new COVID requirements.

“It’s really simple to use. It gives you great confidence that you’re doing all the things you need to do. And so really I recommend for people to go out there, download the VerFly app, and we’ll make sure you’re going to get to where you want to go with everything you need,” Isom promised.

What Are Your Tips For International Travel

Kuritzkes noted that there are mandates for people traveling internationally.

“You can’t go to most countries unless you’re vaccinated or have a negative test and you can’t come back to the U.S. without having a negative test, so there are some burdens that are imposed on the traveling public,” he said.

“I think, in this case, it’s striking the right balance,” Kuritzkes said of international guidelines. “The biggest plus side of having a mandate would be just encouraging that many more people to get vaccinated, but it has its issues.”

Should There Be A Vaccine Mandate For Domestic Flights

Boston Medical Center’s Dr. Davidson Hamer and Dr. Daniel Kuritzkes of Brigham and Women’s Hospital agreed that airline personnel should be vaccinated, but warned that a similar mandate for passengers could be problematic.

Dr. Shira Doron, of Tufts Medical Center, said the question of whether or not to require a vaccine in that setting is an ethical discussion that “needs to be had.” The panel of doctors pointed out that the risk of transmission is always less when people are vaccinated.

“There has been some miscommunication about the idea that vaccinated people can transmit as much as unvaccinated people — that’s not true and that’s been disproven within multiple studies,” Doron said. “On a scientific level, it is true that when you have a gathering of people in close quarters and they’re all vaccinated, the risk is less.”

However, the doctors noted that mask mandates already in place on airlines are an effective way to reduce transmission.

Hamer agreed that it is “really important” for forward-facing airline personnel to get vaccinated due to the high volume of interaction and contact with others inherent in the job.

Boosters Required For Indoor Dining Gyms In Maui

Want to dine indoors in Maui? Having a COVID-19 vaccine is no longer enough patrons will now be required to show proof of a booster dose of the vaccine or a negative test. Maui County Mayor Mike Victorino said that proof of a booster dose would be required starting Jan. 8 to enter restaurants, bars and gyms on the island.

Science says that after the second shot of Pfizer and Moderna vaccinations or the single Johnson & Johnson shot vaccinations weaken after about six months, Victorino said, according to Hawaii News Now.

Diners and gym-goers at Maui establishments will need to prove that theyve received a booster shot as soon as they are eligible. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says people should receive a booster if its been six months since the last dose of Pfizer or Moderna, or two months after Johnson & Johnson.

What Problems Could Arise If A Vaccine Mandate Is Put In Place For Passengers

    Do at

“Trying to move it to the passengers — it’s going to lead to a lot of challenges and I think a lot of unhappy consumers and some further losses to the airline industry, which has really suffered quite a bit in the last year and a half,” Hamer said of a vaccine mandate.

Hamer, who sits on the Flight Safety Foundation, a private nonprofit whose mission is to enhance education and improve flight safety, pointed to a turbulent past few days for Southwest Airlines. The Dallas-based carrier has canceled well over 2,000 flights coast to coast since Saturday, creating a domino effect at airports across the country.

The airline said bad weather and air traffic control issues in Florida kicked off the problems, which snowballed due to its own staffing shortfall, particularly a lack of backup pilots and flight attendants to step in when things go wrong. Other airlines had relatively minor cancellations.

“It is an issue and it’s actually generated problems,” Hamer said. “You never know, when you make a reservation, whether it’s going to stay as that reservation. They may rebook you to try and limit the number of outgoing flights and so if we do something — if there’s a mandate to require vaccination of every passenger — that would exacerbate that situation.”

    What Is Contact Tracing

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requires all Passengers boarding an international flight to the U.S. to provide their contact information as listed below within 72 hours before their flight departs. The information may be used by U.S. public health officials to follow up with Passengers who may have been exposed to a contagious disease before or during travel. If there was exposure, public health officials have the information theyneed toenable prompt public health follow-up such as contacting those who may have been exposed and monitoring their health for signs and symptoms.

What information will I need to provide?

    • Your name
    • Where you’re staying while in the U.S.
    • Primary phone number including country code, at which you can be contacted while in the United States
    • Secondary phone number including country code

Do You Need A Negative Covid Test To Fly On American Airlines

All travelers traveling with American airlines are supposed to show a negative covid-19 test which you can take only one day before the scheduled departure. If you have recently recovered from Covid, you need to show some proof of recovery to American airlines. All the documents related to Covid must be submitted on the official website of American airlines before the departure.

    American Minute | LetsGetChecked pre-flight COVID-19 testing

The first thing you will want to do is book your flight on one of the many airlines currently flying to Hawaii.

Double check to see if the airline is offering free changes and/or cancellations since this will come in handy should anything come up before your flight.

Dont forget that Federal guidelines require that you wear a mask while at the airport and on-board the aircraft to ensure that you and your fellow travelers will arrive into Hawaii safe and sound.

Here are just a few of the airlines that you can book:

You will also want to check if your airline participates in the Pre-Clear program since this will make your Hawaii arrival process much easier.

    How Can I Fly Safely

The doctors’ safety advice is simple: wear a mask. And wear it as often as possible.

“I advise people who are traveling by air, bus or train to wear a good, well-fitting mask that has good filtration,” Doron said.

“That’s absolutely key,” Hamer added. “People should wear a good mask and wear it for the whole time they’re on a plane, anytime they’re in a crowd, waiting to line up to board the plane, any public transportation that they might take to and from the airline.”

The biggest risk for an in-flight outbreak is during mealtime on longer flights, Hamer noted, because people are generally being served around the same time.

“I think being really careful with any mask removal during flights is going to be really important,” he said.

Four : Upload Proof Of Covid

Currently returning Hawaii residents and vaccinated travelers from the mainland U.S. will not need to participate in the pre-travel testing or the 10-day mandatory quarantine.

If you do not complete the necessary steps in the Safe Travels account, you will have a long wait to exit the airport while a Hawaii airport screener assists you.

    • Travelers eligibility begins no sooner than the 15th day after your final vaccination dose.
    • Travelers must upload a good quality PDF or image file of your CDC COVID-19 vaccination card, SMART Health Card with your vaccine record , VAMS printout or DOD Form DD 2766C to their Safe Travels account.
    • Refer to HVCBs Step-by-Step How to Upload a Vaccine Card instructions.
    • Please only upload the side that includes your name, date of birth, and vaccination information.
    • Complete ALL forms required in your Safe Travels account BEFORE you depart to Hawaii.
    • Upon arrival at the airport, travelers must have their CDC Vaccination Record Card, VAMS printout, VAMS printout or certificate, DD 2766C or vaccination source document available to show the screeners either at your boarding gate or once you have arrived in Hawaii .
