Ventilation is another important part of stopping the spread of SARS-CoV-2, and airlines frequently tout the high filtration of air during flight. This is true but what is also true is that while idling or taxiing on the ground, filtration is less optimal. Worse, airports themselves, so far as I could find, have no well-published standards on air filtration or ventilation.

Testing is another important part of mitigation, and I encourage it. Any testing is better than none. Yet, out-of-date tests dont mean much. The regulations currently used for international travel to many locations things like a negative PCR test 72 hours prior to travel or a negative antigen test 24 hours prior to boarding leave much to be desired. Just as a pregnancy test can turn positive from one day to the next, so can a Covid test. And of course, we have no domestic travel testing mandates.

So where does that leave us? Vaccines.

Is A Covid Test Needed For Domestic Flights

Hi, everyone.

I’m thinking of flying from Philadelphia to Boston just for next weekend . Was thinking of JetBlue, but I could use a different airline. I’m trying to figure out if I’ll need a negative COVID test for a domestic flight, but everything that comes up says I’ll need one for international flights coming in. I can’t find any information about domestic flights inside the U.S.

Since JetBlue’s customer service line asks you to call back closer to your flight and has a wait time of over an hour to speak to someone, thought I’d ask here if anyone has flown this route recently and has an idea of what’s required. If anyone has an idea of what I’ll be required to show upon landing, that would also be helpful. Thanks!

On the same day that the U.S. Supreme Court heard a challenge to the Biden administrations COVID-19 vaccine mandates, American Airlines announced new restrictions for its unvaccinated U.S. employees. The Jan. 7 statement from American indicated that more than 96% of its employees had either submitted proof of vaccination or requested a religious or medical accommodation from the mandate.

Going forward, the airline said it will impose additional requirements for unvaccinated U.S.-based employees. Those who are unvaccinated must complete a weekly self-health declaration, practice social distancing when possible and wear a mask at all times, except when outside and social distancing can be maintained.

The requirements apply even to those who have received approved accommodations from the vaccine mandate.

American employees had previously faced a deadline of Jan. 4 to provide proof of vaccination or receive an exemption. However, ongoing legal challenges to federal vaccine mandates have left airlines with little choice but to move the goalposts on their own internal directives.

Us Airline Execs Push Back On Possibility Of Domestic Covid

Do you need a covid 19 test for domestic flights? : delta

Executives said the requirement would pose logistical challenges.

Travel tips amid COVID-19 guidelines

U.S. airlines are pushing back against the possibility of COVID-19 testing before domestic flights after the Biden administration said it is “actively looking” at making it a requirement.

“It would have us testing Americans on airplanes that we all know are safe to be on,” American Airlines CEO Doug Parker said during the carrier’s Q4 earnings call.

Executives from Southwest and JetBlue echoed that sentiment, explaining that a domestic testing requirement would be too costly and pose logistical challenges. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials said Wednesday that the conversation is “ongoing” and that the agency is “actively looking at it.”

The domestic testing would expand upon the administration’s mandatory requirement for U.S.-bound travelers, which went into effect Tuesday. All travelers flying into the U.S. must now provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test, taken no more than three days before their flight, or they will be denied boarding.

In Thursdays earnings call, American Airlines said this new requirement has hurt demand for its short-haul international flying, mainly to Mexico and other Caribbean beach destinations.

By the holiday season, flying will have changed dramatically for Americans returning to the United States from abroad. They will be asked to show proof that they are vaccinated, to commit to two coronavirus tests if they are not and to participate in a new contact tracing system.

For Americans traveling within the United States, however, none of this applies. As airlines prepare for whats expected to be the biggest travel rush of the past two years, domestic travel aside from a mask mandate and some restrictions on alcohol will be largely the same as it was before the pandemic: packed cabins and no testing or proof of vaccination required.

Whether this is a symptom of denial or a sign of progress depends on who you ask. Senator Dianne Feinstein, Democrat of California, recently telegraphed her position when she proposed a bill that would require passengers on domestic flights to be fully vaccinated, to have recently tested negative or to have a certificate of recovery from the virus.

Domestic Air Travel Could Soon Require Covid

Plan your holiday travel accordingly

Up until this point, there has been no movement toward requiring air passengers traveling domestically to provide proof of vaccination or proof of a negative Covid-19 test prior to boarding a plane. That might change if Sen. Dianne Feinstein has her way. On Wednesday, Feinstein introduced legislation that would require passengers to present either proof of Covid-19 vaccination, proof of a recent negative Covid-19 test, or proof that you already had Covid-19 and recovered before you can board a domestic aircraft.

The move would come just in time for a busy holiday travel season and will surely cause some to reconsider their plans if it becomes law.

Sen. Feinstein announced her proposal this week in a tweet saying that the bill would help stem the tide of potential Covid spread which occurred during the winter season of 2020 as holiday travel reached its peak:

We cant allow upcoming holiday air travel to contribute to another surge in COVID cases. Today I introduced legislation requiring passengers on domestic flights to be vaccinated, test negative or be fully recovered from a previous COVID illness.

Senator Dianne Feinstein

The bill would require the Department of Health and Human Services to work with the FAA on creating a workable solution:

How To Get A Covid

American Minute | LetsGetChecked pre-flight COVID-19 testing

If you need to take a COVID-19 test before flying, there are more testing options than ever before. Many airlines have made it easier to find a test before travel, as more destinations require proof of a negative result upon arrival or even before you board.

You can also schedule a test outside of the options offered by your airline. Many drug stores, urgent care facilities and hospitals offer coronavirus testing, and in many cases, it comes free of charge. You could save a lot of money by coordinating your own tests, especially if you’re traveling in groups. However, keep these factors in mind when scheduling your COVID-19 test:

For the most accurate information, confirm with the tourism board and any official government resources from your destination to get a COVID-19 test for travel.

American Airlines Flies 40000 Passengers To The Us And Prepares For More As Borders Open

American Airlines welcomed 150 international flights Monday as the U.S. opened its borders to non-citizens who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

“We’re seeing fantastic demand, 40,000 customers are coming inbound to the U.S. today,” American Airlines President Robert Isom told Yahoo Finance Live.

“People want to get out on the road,” Isom said, predicting the surge to continue well into 2022. “There are families and grandparents that haven’t seen, you know, children in a long time. Business people that really want to get out and make contact with customers, you know, it’s all over the place.”

New CDC guidelines require non-citizen travelers to provide proof they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to boarding a flight to the U.S. All passengers, including U.S. citizens, are required to test negative for COVID-19 within three days of a flight’s departure.

American, like other airlines provides tools on its website and app to help passengers comply with the new COVID requirements.

“It’s really simple to use. It gives you great confidence that you’re doing all the things you need to do. And so really I recommend for people to go out there, download the VerFly app, and we’ll make sure you’re going to get to where you want to go with everything you need,” Isom promised.

What Are Your Tips For International Travel

Kuritzkes noted that there are mandates for people traveling internationally.

“You can’t go to most countries unless you’re vaccinated or have a negative test and you can’t come back to the U.S. without having a negative test, so there are some burdens that are imposed on the traveling public,” he said.

“I think, in this case, it’s striking the right balance,” Kuritzkes said of international guidelines. “The biggest plus side of having a mandate would be just encouraging that many more people to get vaccinated, but it has its issues.”
