Covid Vaccines And Blood Clots: What Researchers Know So Far

It was when the second person with unusual clots came in that Phillip Nicolson knew something was wrong. Blood clots are uncommon in young people, and its even rarer to see a combination of blood clots and alarmingly low levels of platelets cell fragments that help to form clots.
Yet in the space of one week in March, two young people with this pairing of symptoms had arrived at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, UK, where Nicolson works as a haematology specialist. And both had recently been given the OxfordAstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
Nicolson had been on call at the hospital all weekend, and had been looking forward to a rest on Monday. Instead, he found himself rushing around to get consent to collect samples to study in the laboratory. By the time he arrived at the second patients bedside, a third had been admitted.
Despite fervent work by researchers such as Nicolson, the mechanism that links the vaccines and VITT is still uncertain. Establishing a mechanism could reveal ways to prevent and treat the condition, and improve the design of future vaccines. Over the past few months, researchers have gathered clues and developed a host of hypotheses.
How Can I Tell If I Have One
Anyone who has any of the following symptoms four days or more after having the vaccine should seek prompt medical help:
- A severe headache that is not relieved by painkillers or is getting worse
- A headache that feels worse when you lie down or bend over
- A headache that is unusual for you and occurs with blurred vision, feeling sick, problems speaking or drowsiness
- Seizures or weakness
- A rash that looks like small bruises or bleeding under the skin

Vaccine Remedy May Be Worse Than The Disease

While I recommend reading Seneffs paper in its entirety, Ive extracted key sections below, starting with how the spike protein can trigger pathological damage leading to lung damage and heart and brain diseases:22
The picture is now emerging that SARS-CoV-2 has serious effects on the vasculature in multiple organs, including the brain vasculature In a series of papers, Yuichiro Suzuki in collaboration with other authors presented a strong argument that the spike protein by itself can cause a signaling response in the vasculature with potentially widespread consequences.
These authors observed that, in severe cases of COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2 causes significant morphological changes to the pulmonary vasculature Furthermore, they showed that exposure of cultured human pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein S1 subunit was sufficient to promote cell signaling without the rest of the virus components.
Follow-on papers showed that the spike protein S1 subunit suppresses ACE2, causing a condition resembling pulmonary arterial hypertension , a severe lung disease with very high mortality The in vivo studies they referred to had shown that SARS coronavirus-induced lung injury was primarily due to inhibition of ACE2 by the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, causing a large increase in angiotensin-II.
Is There A Need To Take The Second Dose After 12 Weeks
Current research-based evidence suggests you should take a second vaccine dose for COVID-19 anywhere from 28 days to 12 weeks after your first vaccine dose, depending on which vaccine you receive.
- If you received Covishield, the current gap between the two doses is 12 to 16 weeks.
- If you received Covaxin, the current gap between the two doses is 28 days to four weeks.
- For maximum protection against COVID-19, it’s important to take both doses of whichever vaccine you initially received.

What Is The Treatment For Vitt
The unique process by which the clots develop, however, means that treatment needs to be specific, too. Douketis speculates that the high rates of mortality related to this reaction in Europe where the vaccine was initially given, may have had a lot to do with evolving understanding of the reaction itself. Doctors may have assumed the clots could be treated with blood thinners immediately, an unintentional error that may have accelerated the clotting process.
This is a very unusual type of blood clot and has to be treated in a very different way, he explains.
The current thinking is that before the clots can be treated, the hyperactive immune response needs to be dealt with.
The frontline treatment is anti-immune medications to suppress or put down the fire and the blood thinners clean things up, in a manner of speaking, by helping the body melt away the existing blood clots.
The necessity of specific intervention makes awareness of the symptoms of VITT vital. This rare but serious reaction tends to occur within four to 30 days of vaccination and can include:
- Severe headache
- Back pain
- Shortness of breath
Should those symptoms present themselves and linger after the normal 24- to 48-hour window associated with regular vaccination reactions such as fever or muscle aches, immediate medical attention is advised.
How should Canadians weigh the risks and benefits of the AstraZeneca vaccine?
The Timeframe Of Risk Is Narrow 4
Third: If you did receive the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen vaccine, the presumed window of risk is quite narrow between 4 and 28 days after vaccination. VITT has not been reported to occur immediately or longer-term after vaccination.
Demographic and clinical risk factors for the development of VITT are uncertain. Most patients who developed VITT were younger than 60 years old. While all of the cases following the Johnson and Johnson/Janssen vaccine in the United States occurred in women, both men and women have been diagnosed with VITT following the AstraZeneca vaccine in other parts of the world. There is no evidence that patients with a history of thrombosis, thrombophilia, or HIT are at increased risk for VITT.
Scientists Find How Astrazeneca Vaccine Causes Clots
So far, European regulators have reported more than 220 cases of unusual blood clots and low levels of platelets in patients who received the vaccine, called Vaxzevria, which was developed with funding from the U.S. governmentâs Operation Warp Speed program to spur development of a suite of vaccines to protect people from COVID-19. The AstraZeneca vaccine has not yet been authorized for use in the United States.
“This is, in my opinion, rock-solid evidence,” said Andreas Greinacher, MD, head of the Institute of Immunology and Transfusion Medicine, University Hospital Greifswald, Germany, who was among the first scientists in the world to link the rare clots to antibodies against a key protein in platelets.
“This is what scientists usually think is confirmatory evidence,” he said in a call with reporters hours after publishing his study as a preprint ahead of peer review on the Research Square server.
Greinacher said he felt an urgent need to get the information out as soon as possible. He said his team had worked around the clock for 5 weeks to get answers, “because we are in the middle of the vaccination campaign. This was the driving force for us and the big motivation to provide these data as fast as any other possible,” he told reporters on the call.
He said he only knew of one case of an autoimmune syndrome like this lasting 10 years, but that was in a patient who had taken the blood thinner heparin, which can cause a nearly identical syndrome.
Should I Have The Astrazeneca Vaccine
Jo Jerrome, chief executive of Thrombosis UK: “The Joint Committee on Vaccines and Immunisation and Expert Haematology Panel have advised that anyone with a history of blood clots are at no increased risk from the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.”
Public Health Wales: “Public Health Wales supports the expert scientific advice of UK expert groups that the benefits of vaccination with all Covid-19 vaccines in use continue to outweigh the risks of Covid-19.
“Covid-19 has caused over 120,000 deaths in the UK, with an average of 30 deaths a day still being reported. The vaccination programme has already saved over 6,000 lives.”

What Are Cvst Clots
CVST stands for cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. Put simply, this is a clot found in a large vein in the brain.
Blood normally travels through veins from the brain back to the heart.
The CVST clot can block the flow of blood in the brain, reducing oxygen supply and potentially causing damage – stopping the central nervous system from working properly.
Rare clots have also been found in other areas, such as the large veins in the abdomen, in people who have had the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab, and, in a handful of cases, in some arteries .
Looking To The Future
âThe medical community is still gathering data and monitoring the situation, and has determined that while a causal relationship is plausible, it has yet to be fully confirmed. In addition, because of the rarity of these events and the potential severity of COVID-19, the European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organization have concluded that the overall benefits of the vaccine continue to outweigh the very small risk. Some countries have chosen to take a very cautious approach until more data is available, and have either suspended the use of the vaccine or limited it to patients over a certain age who may be at lower risk of such a syndrome. The United States has decided to temporarily pause administering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine until data can be thoroughly assessed and vetted.
To use a sports analogy, we are currently in the fourth quarter of the pandemic. Cases may be decreasing in some areas, and we may be getting somewhat ahead of the curve, but now is not the time to abandon a defensive approach. This means wearing masks, practicing safe preventive measures, and continuing the race against time to vaccinate yourself and your loved ones before the virus has a chance to further mutate and negate all the scientific progress that has been made.

An NBA player, during a Twitch livestream, revealed his season ended early after he got blood clots from taking the COVID-19 vaccine. Brandon Goodwin stated while he was playing for the Atlanta Hawks, he started to feel side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine.
He said the first symptom was back pain during games, so he finally decided to go see a doctor who diagnosed him with blood clots.
He said the back pain occurred around the same time he was vaccinated he even went as far to say hes 1,000% sure the vaccine ended his basketball season last year.
Goodwin is no longer part of the Atlanta Hawks organization, but he called out the organization for keeping his condition a secret and making press releases that stated he was sitting out due to respiratory reasons.

Should You Get The Johnson & Johnson Vaccine
Its important to remember that for the vast majority of people, the benefits of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine outweigh the harms, Dr. Meyer says. The blood clots have been very rare and unusual. The fact that the vaccine requires only one shot is an important benefit for many people. There are other advantages of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine as well. It has less refrigeration requirements than the Moderna or Pfizer vaccines, so its amenable to pop-up facilitiesand in Connecticut there have been a lot of mobile health deliveries that carried Johnson & Johnson prior to the pause, Dr. Meyer says.
Dr. Bona agrees. I dont mean to minimize the effect of the clots on the people who get them, because obviously for those people its a devastating consequence, he says. But this is going to be infrequent, while the clotting rate is going to be much higher among those who have a COVID-19 infection. Dr. Chun adds that people are more likely to develop a serious blood clot if they are infected with COVID-19 than they are from a vaccine to prevent the disease.

Public Health Wales: “Public Health Wales advises that anyone with a history of a blood clot should speak to their GP ahead of their vaccination.”

I Have A History Of Blood Clots
Jo Jerrome, chief executive of Thrombosis UK: “Having a previous thrombosis or thrombophilia is not a risk factor for developing the rare post-Covid-19 vaccine thrombosis and thrombocytopenia.”
Public Health Wales: “Following reports of an extremely rare and specific blood clot after vaccination with the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency and the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation confirmed on 7 April 2021 that this type of blood clot with low platelets are a possible side effect of the vaccine.
“However, they continue to advise that the benefits of vaccination with the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine continue to outweigh the risks of Covid-19 for the vast majority of adults.
“Public Health Wales is aware of one confirmed case of this extremely rare type of clot in Wales after receiving AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine among over one million people who have received that vaccine.
“The expert scientific advice from the JCVI is that risk benefit remains strongly in favour of vaccination with the AstraZeneca vaccine for those aged 30 and over, and those aged under 30 who have underlying health conditions which puts them at higher risk of severe outcomes from Covid-19 infection.”
Effect On Women Unclear
Itâs also not clear why more cases seem to be in women than in men. Andrew Eisenberger, MD, an associate professor of hematology and oncology at Columbia University, said the most common causes of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis have to do with conditions that raise estrogen levels, like pregnancy and hormonal contraception.
âEstrogen naturally leads to changes in several clotting proteins in the blood that may predispose to abnormal blood clotting in a few different sites in the body,â he said. âThe clotting changes we are encountering with some of COVID-19 vaccines are likely to be synergistic with the effects of estrogen on the blood.â
No matter the cause, the CDC on Tuesday alerted doctors to keep a high level of awareness for VIIT in patients who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccination within the last 2 weeks. In those patients, the usual course of treatment with blood thinning drugs like heparin may be harmful.
