Does Mexico Require Covid Test For Entry

How To Start Your Search

U.S. begins requiring negative Covid test for entry into the country

If youre not sure where to start your search for a test, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico has a covid-19 page on its website where one can find how to acquire a test, whether results are reliably available, how much one should cost and more.

You can also go to the local tourism office for help finding approved labs. Airlines, such as Aeromexico, also have information on their websites for finding tests around Mexico.

I assumed that I would run into coronavirus testing centers wherever I traveled. At first, that didnt appear to be the case in the first city I visited, Merída, the capital of Yucatán state. If I had done more research, I would have found that there were plenty of options.

However, Google may not have the most up-to-date information on testing options. In the second stop on my trip, Playa del Carmen, I searched on Google Maps for coronavirus test and got just a few results at pharmacies. But after walking around town for a day, I saw there were dozens of locations nearby that Google hadnt flagged.

What To Do With Your Results

For my American Airlines flight back from Mexico, I wasnt allowed to check-in until I uploaded a photo of my coronavirus test result into an app called VeriFLY, which stores your required documents for travel. I sent in my results, had them approved hours later and completed the standard American Airlines check-in process.

Not all airlines use so-called vaccine passports such as VeriFLY. You may be asked to provide a paper or electronic copy of your test results to airline personnel at the airport.

After a six-hour layover at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, the second leg of my journey home from Mexico was canceled with no other options to fly that evening. Should you be one of the many unlucky travelers whose flights into the United States are canceled and rescheduled for the next day, you will need to be retested to meet the CDC requirement. Should you be one of the even unluckier travelers to test positive abroad, you wont be allowed to fly back until youve completely recovered from the illness.

Do You Need To Take An Rt

No, you do not need a negative PCR test prior to departure or on arrival in Mexico. There are also no quarantine requirements on arrival. If you do feel like you are showing symptoms of COVID-19 on arrival, ask for the Sanidad Internacionalthe international health unit. They will inform you of any further testing and quarantine measures. These rules apply to both vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers.

Proof Of Accommodation And Onward Travel

Immigration officials at the port of entry may ask to see proof of your departure plans from Mexico before allowing you entry to the country. They can also ask to see proof of your booked accommodation, as well as funds to cover your intended stay while in Mexico.

If you have been invited to stay in someones home, immigration officials may also ask for a letter of invitation from the person you are visiting. This should include as much information as possible, including the host and travellers full names and contact details, address while in Mexico and reason for visit.

Mexico Travel And Covid Tests

Do you need to provide a negative COVID test to enter Mexico? In short: no. But you still need to complete a declaration of health, which asks general questions about your health and recent potential exposures to COVID.

There are also health screening procedures at airports and other ports of entry, and people showing symptoms may be subject to further restrictions. According to the U.S. Embassys website: Passengers and aircrew members arriving at Mexican airports may be subject to health screenings including temperature checks. However, you do need to be tested to return to the United States. As of December 6, the State Department requires a negative viral COVID test taken no more than one day before travel. This applies to anyone traveling by air into the country, including U.S. citizens and people who are fully vaccinated.

Other Important Things To Know

Mexico asks that tourists wear face masks in public settings, social distance and follow its Covid-19 prevention guidelines as much as possible. You can access these guidelines here.

While not federally mandated, some states and even cities may require masks to be worn at all times. A federal curfew is also not mandated, but some states in Mexico do enforce a curfew. Interstate travel throughout Mexico can be restricted in some cities depending on the current situation.

Finally, make sure to keep track of Mexicos Covid-19 monitoring system during your travels. Mexico uses a system of color-coded labels to let the public know the risk level, and ultimately, the restrictions implemented. You can access the list of restrictions here.

Travel Bans From Countries Affected By Coronavirus Variants

A travel ban is in place for countries with widespread occurrence of SARS-CoV-2 virus variants of concern . Transport companies, e.g. air carriers and railway companies, may not transport any persons from these countries to Germany. There are only a few, strictly defined exceptions to this travel ban, namely for:

  • German citizens and persons who are resident in Germany with a current right to reside in the country, as well as their spouses, partners and minor children
  • persons catching a connecting flight who do not leave the transit zone of a passenger airport and
  • few other special cases.

Persons qualifying for these exceptions must nevertheless complete a digital entry registration before entering the country, undergo mandatory testing or provide proof of immunity, and comply with the applicable quarantine regulations for travellers entering the country. Further information is provided below.
