The new testing sites will utilize Abbotts new ID NOW COVID-19 test, which delivers positive results in as little as five minutes and negative results within 13 minutes.

The 15 locations are being finalized in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services , and are planned for select hot spot markets with escalating rates of COVID-19 cases. Walgreens plans to be able to test up to 3,000 people per day across these additional sites, which are expected to be activated beginning later this week.

Walgreens remains committed to working with federal, state and local governments, as well as industry partners to meet the needs of the communities we serve across the country during the pandemic, said Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president. Were continuing to do everything we can, both with our own resources and also by partnering with others, to serve as an access point within the community for COVID-19 testing. Opening our first drive-thru testing location last month has allowed us to quickly learn and develop an efficient and scalable process, and were pleased to be working with Abbott to help accelerate our efforts, and to enable quick results for those being tested.

The Importance Of The Tests

COVID

This OTC testing makes all that simpler.

Each test is easy to administer at home and has a swab that doesnt need to be put too far up the nose.

Infectious disease experts say the OTC tests, used correctly, are a welcome addition to COVID-19 management.

On a community level, the ability to do mass screening with OTC kits means that gatherings could happen more safely, Dr. Gregg Miller, chief medical officer at Vituity and an emergency medicine physician at Swedish Edmonds in Seattle, told Healthline.

It will be interesting to see if mass gatherings sporting events, music shows, or other venues like schools, businesses, or airports start requiring proof of a negative test, he said.

For example, might a professional convention in Las Vegas distribute these tests to all attendees and require you to show a negative result prior to entering the conference hall? Miller asked.

When To Get Your Covid

Time — or more accurately, timing — is of the essence when it comes to getting a COVID-19 test for travel. The exact guidelines you need to follow will vary based on where you’re going, where you’re coming from and whether or not you’re visiting multiple locations.

In general, it’s a good idea to take your COVID-19 test so that you receive results within three days of travel. This means you can take a rapid antigen test 24 to 72 hours before traveling or you can take a PCR test four to six days before travel. PCR tests usually take 24 to 72 hours to process.

Where To Get A Covid

What is an at-home COVID-19 test? | Walgreens

Going on a trip? Don’t forget your COVID-19 test.

As more and more people get their vaccinations, the desire to travel grows stronger, fueled largely by the declining cases of COVID-19. The world is starting to feel a little bit safer.

If you’re preparing to cure your cabin fever, don’t forget that you need proof of a negative COVID-19 test to travel to many destinations — and to get back into the US, if you plan on traveling abroad.

Though COVID-19 tests aren’t in short supply anymore, some places still won’t test you if you don’t have symptoms or known exposure. That said, there are plenty of locations you can get tested for COVID-19 before traveling, as detailed below.

Basics Of Traveling To The Usa

As a reminder:

  • Flying to the USA has always been allowed for any reason
  • Unless youve been to Europe or a few other countries in the 14 previous days
  • Returning to Canada via the land border has always been allowed for another return option
  • Whether or not you are vaccinated
  • Even going to the US via the land border could be possible next month
  • The current ban theoretically expires on October 22nd
  • Given all those facts, many of you have restarted traveling to the USAor are planning to do so soon. You can read our post about how Canadians can travel to the United States.

Because even if its normally a terrible place to travel to if you want to keep costs down , some prefer the convenience of visiting our closest neighbor. And of course, there are many appealing destinations in the vast country .

But in terms of the cost of the required tests to return to Canada, the USA is actually the cheapest destination in the world: tests are completely free. And its so easy

Getting Tested For Free In The Usa

Walgreens is a chain of pharmacies with free COVID-19 testing in most states , and other chains like Rite Aid seem to offer the same free COVID-19 PCR tests. While those work extremely well, another chain, CVS Pharmacy, has mixed results .

Websites like Go Get Tested and Curative also work in certain specific states.

Other readers told us that the generic free public health testing locations gave them a formal certificate so that can be used to enter Canada.

And if not, you can do what you should for literally anything you need to find, which is use . Just type free PCR tests and youll probably find even more options, in the USA at least.

Back in the USA, I can personally vouch for how easy it was with Walgreens. There are no residency, citizenship, or insurance requirements. Its free for everyone. Walgreens alone has locations in almost every state.

Most locations seem to be drive-through tests only, so if you dont have a rental car, you can grab a taxi from the parking lot to the drive-through lane for a pretty low cost since the test took me less than 5 minutes both times I did it in the USA.

Of course, just like the free vaccines, you need to make an appointment online in advance. And yes, the online booking process might ask for a US address: I just put in my Marriott hotels address.

Both times they didnt check anything once I arrived for the test . All those with who I shared this tip have confirmed this too.

At least for the non-PCR test

Another Pro Tip To Simplify Your Testing

Researching your travel plans and being prepared and well-informed has always been the best way to travel for less, but its even more true with the pandemic

Not many people know that free PCR tests are easy to find in most US states, but even fewer know that there is an even better option than PCRs: NAATs. Thats another type of test that is much more convenient.

These are accepted to enter Canada, and the results come in so much faster! I booked mine at a Walgreens in Newark when returning from Uzbekistan in late May via the USA to enter via the land border and avoid the hotel quarantine before that ineffective measure was finally abolished.

I got my results just 67 minutes after my appointment ended! And these tests are free too of course! The official timespan Walgreens gives for results is within 24 hours .

But in practice, everyone I recommended the NAAT to got the results in just a few hours. My appointment was at 9:30 AM and I was there at that time precisely.

It took just a few minutes to do the test.

And my results came in at 10:37 AM.

Thats a lot quicker than the experience I shared getting a free PCR test in Texas.

NAATs are rapid tests, but not the same as rapid antigen tests .

Walgreens calls NAATs Rapid ID NOW tests . NAATs dont seem to be readily available as easily in countries other than the USA, for those who are wondering.

Sensitive Walgreens Customer Data Leaked Including Covid

    CVS, Walgreens ramp up COVID

Recent security reports indicate that the results of COVID-19 tests conducted by the pharmaceutical company Walgreens could be exposed to threat actors. According to the report, the leak would include full names, dates of birth, gender, phone numbers and email addresses of millions of customers.

A spokesman for the pharmaceutical company denied such reports, saying that the protection of its users information is Walgreens top priority: We have implemented a reliable security program in order to protect the confidential data of our patients.

The spokesperson adds that the report revealing the leak is the product of an inaccurate assessment of the companys security measures, specifically in the COVID-19 Testing section of its website.

Apparently, this potential leak is related to the companys COVID-19 testing registration system in this section of their website, customers sign up to request a test, receiving in response a 32-digit number as a patient ID. This key is included in the appointment request page, and anyone who has the URL can access that page.

The problem grows considering that these pages remain active for up to six months.

In certain cases, a threat actor could create a bot to guess many of these patient IDs using brute force, performing ambitious information-gathering attacks to obtain a large amount of sensitive details in a short time.

    How Much Does A Covid

Luke Abrahamson, a Minnesota resident, ended up paying about $500 for COVID-19 testing for his 3-year-old daughter over the past year.

While he and the rest of his family could get a free PCR test through Minnesota and Vault Medical Services, his youngest didnt qualify.

We had to go and find other testing solutions, Abrahamson said. They eventually found a MedExpress, which he thought his insurance would cover. Although Congress passed laws that mandated free COVID-19 testing, prohibiting co-pays and deductibles, in many situations, people like Abrahamson are getting billed for the visit, not the test itself.

Thats the frustrating part is, no, I dont want to go in and get an appointment and get charged $110 for that when I just know I need the test, Abrahamson said. But theres nothing thats easily accessible to go get a test for a 3-year-old.

While the national conversation on solutions to the COVID-19 crisis has shifted to mass vaccination, testing is still key to combating the spread of the virus.

The proactive strategy of being out there and encouraging people to get tested isnt anywhere near where it was a year ago. The emphasis is really on being out there and encouraging people to get vaccinated, said Jorge Caballero, a San Francisco doctor who co-founded Coders Against COVID, a volunteer group thats created a database of COVID-19 testing sites.

With people returning to work and kids in school, the demand for COVID-19 testing has increased, especially for over-the-counter tests that give quick results. Pharmacy chains are limiting purchases and consumers are sometimes left scrambling to find out if theyre infected before deciding whether to go out in public.

“I went to purchase an at-home rapid test at Walgreens before attending an indoor funeral service a few weeks ago and got the very last one they had,” she said. “The pharmacist told me they simply cannot keep them in stock.”

Mary Cypcar of Racine went on vacation to the Dominican Republic after she and her husband were fully vaccinated. Now back home, she’s among those finding it difficult to purchase over-the-counter rapid COVID-19 tests to ensure she doesn’t inadvertently infect others.

Since September, Walgreens has been limiting customers to four tests per purchase.

The pharmacy chain continues to see demand for COVID-19 testing across the country and is trying to keep up with demand by working with partners in the supply chain, said a spokesperson for Walgreens.

Meanwhile, clinical testing for COVID-19 continues at local health departments and at doctor offices.

There have also been issues when people who do not speak English fluently try to get tested, Murphy said.

The other piece of the puzzle weve encountered is if people are not English speakers, sometimes there are different channels to navigate, she said.

Milford has been reaching out to houses of worship to share testing site information, in an effort to reach people whose first language is not English, and is trying to bring one of the states Stop the Spread sites to town.

In general, calling ahead, to both the testing site and your insurance company if you have one is strongly recommended. COVID-19 information changes constantly and may vary among testing sites and insurance companies. Some sites require appointments, or wont test a person if certain requirements are not met.

It can definitely make your head spin, Murphy said, of the differences between tests, sites, who can be tested, and how much it will cost.
