  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends masking indoors in 97 percent of counties regardless of individuals vaccination status.
  • State officials have rejected or banned mask mandates.
  • In Texas, the governor has prohibited mask mandates in schools, but the State Supreme Court has temporarily allowed some districts to require face coverings.

Efforts For Mitigating The Spread Of Covid

Texas State University is preparing to return to a vibrant university experience, offering in-person classes, services, and activities at full capacity. Read the full statement from TXST Chief Medical Officer Dr. Emilio Carranco.

Texas State is requesting all members of the university community to:

  • Get Vaccinated.;Vaccines are available at the;Student Health Center ;by appointment for students, faculty, and staff. If you have not done so, please;schedule a vaccine appointment;today.
  • Wear a mask.;Face masks have proven very effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19 on our campuses.;The university strongly urges that everyone, vaccinated and unvaccinated, wear face masks indoors.
  • Get tested.;Regardless of vaccination status, get tested before the start of the fall semester and when selected to participate in Texas States random COVID-19 testing program. Testing information can be found on the;Texas States COVID-19 Testing, Reporting, and Response Steps webpage.;;
  • Stay home and get tested if you develop cold-like or other;COVID-19 symptoms, regardless of vaccination status.
  • Promptly Report to Bobcat Trace;if you test positive for COVID-19 or have had close contact with someone who received a positive test result. Reporting information can be found on the;Texas States COVID-19 Testing, Reporting, and Response Steps webpage.
  • Isolate if you test positive for COVID-19.;Stay home and away from others for 10 days from the start of symptoms or the positive test if no symptoms.
  • Whos Eligible For The Vaccine

All people 12 and older are eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine in Texas. Children ages 12-17 can get the Pfizer vaccine, but COVID-19 vaccines are not mandatory for Texas students.

Based on several factors, medical experts believe the COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective even for the medically vulnerable. But several studies are in the works, including trials and research happening in Texas, to deepen scientific understanding of how the vaccines affect people with immune disorders, cancer and transplant patients who are taking immunosuppressant medications, and people who have allergies.

State and local health officials say that vaccine supply is healthy enough to meet demand across much of Texas. Most chain pharmacies and many independent ones have a ready supply of vaccine doses, which is administered free and mainly on a walk-in basis. Many private doctors offices also have doses. And you can check current lists of large vaccine hubs that are still operating here.

Public health departments also have vaccines. You can register with the Texas Public Health Vaccine Scheduler either online or by phone. And businesses or civic organizations can set up vaccine clinics to offer it to employers, visitors, customers or members.

Meanwhile, since July 6, the seven-day moving average of new confirmed Covid-19 coronavirus cases each day has been steadily moving upwards, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services website. On Wednesday, the number of new confirmed cases exceeded 10,000 for the first time since February 9. Covid-19 hospitalizations went above 5,000 for the first time since March 4 too.

Speaking of hospitalizations, a tweet from Matt Larger, Projects Editor at the NPR station at Austin, Texas, pointed out how local officials may no longer be able to impose Covid-19 precautions even if hospitalizations were getting out of hand in their area:

Telling individuals that they have the right to do whatever they want may sound good to the individuals. But what if you were to do that for other contexts? Why are there rules and regulations that people have to wear clothes, cant just take anything they want to take, and not pee on tables in restaurants? What if you said, people have mastered the idea of wearing clothes, not stealing, and controlling their urine. They have the individual right and responsibility to decide for themselves and their pants whether they will wear them, open their pants, and engage in any peeing activities. What would a state look like with no rules or regulations?

Earlier this month, the states positivity rate the ratio of confirmed cases to tests went above 10% for the first time since February, a threshold that Gov. Greg Abbott has previously identified as dangerous. Statewide, hospitalizations have increased this month as well.

Health officials are also worried about the current stalled vaccination rates in the state and country, which have given the virus room to spread. As of Tuesday, nearly 43% of Texans have been fully vaccinated. The state continues to lag behind the national vaccination rate of 48.8%, according to the Mayo Clinic.

More Public School Students Are Getting Covid In Texas As Fights Over Masks Ensue

      • EmbedEmbed

In Texas, the number of public school students infected with the coronavirus continues to surge. This comes as state and local officials squabble over mask mandates.

      LULU GARCIA-NAVARRO, HOST:

In the past month, there were more than 73,000 confirmed coronavirus cases among Texas students. More than a dozen school districts have temporarily closed as a result. And Texas is leading the country in child deaths from COVID-19. Amid the surge, state lawmakers pushed through strict bills on abortion, voting restrictions and bail reform, while Governor Greg Abbott publicly fought local governments over their efforts to stem the spread of the disease. And that has frustrated many Texans, as Paul Flahive of Texas Public Radio reports.

PAUL FLAHIVE, BYLINE: Hospitals across the state are running out of pediatric ICU beds. Texas’ Department of State Health Services says only 100 remain. And just a couple of hundred more regular ICU beds are available in the state of 29 million people. Dr. David Portugal is a cardiologist in Sugarland, Texas.

DAVID PORTUGAL: Governor Abbott has failed us. A Republican state legislature has failed us. These leaders should be held accountable and be asked to explain how they can justify taking actions that are killing their fellow Texans.

ELENA JIMENEZ-GUTIERREZ: Hospital staff and resources are stretched to the breaking point.

These restrictions will remain in place indefinitely.

How Else Should I Protect Myself

If youre able to do so, health experts say the best thing to do is to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The CDC also recommends avoiding poorly ventilated venues and large crowds, washing your hands often, covering your coughs and sneezes, cleaning and sanitizing highly touched surfaces daily, and monitoring your health daily. Texas health experts have also recommended staying away from people who arent following COVID-19 safety protocols.

Some States Push Back Against Masks As Covid

Texas sees record number of daily coronavirus deaths ...

The executive order that Abbott actually signed does not, in fact, authorize all Texas law enforcement officers to stop any individual suspected of being an undocumented immigrant carrying Covid-19 anywhere in the state. Rather, the order is directed solely at the transportation of undocumented immigrants from federal immigration facilities to shelters, hospitals and other places where they can be safely housed while their fate is determined.

Indeed, the order does not prevent federal law enforcement officers themselves from moving these people from immigration facilities to other locations; it merely prevents other federal actors, or private parties, including those operating under government contracts, from doing so.

Thats a big deal for charities and other nongovernmental organizations currently assisting the Biden administration along the Texas-Mexico border. But contra the clear insinuation of Abbotts news release, its not open season for racial profiling on Texas roadways.

Attorney General Merrick Garland explained as much on Thursday in a letter to Abbott, listing numerous ways this order directly interferes with federal immigration enforcement and indirectly hinders the implementation of federal law. His threat to pursue all appropriate legal remedies to ensure that Texas does not interfere with the functions of the federal government if the order is not rescinded does not seem like an empty one.

Texas Governor Abbott Tests Negative For Covid

In video posted on Twitter, the Republican governor, whose office announced four days ago that he had tested positive with the virus, credited the vaccination for his short illness and urged Texans to get vaccinated.

Abbott said he will continue to quarantine at the recommendation of doctors and will continue to work to open infusion centers for antibody therapy treatment across his state.

Abbott’s office on Tuesday said he had the virus but was not experiencing symptoms. He received a monoclonal antibody treatment, it said. It did not give any indication as to when the governor contracted the virus.

Abbott is one of a few Southern governors at the center of the masking debate and has sought to block local officials in the state from mandating the use of nose and mouth coverings to reduce infection by the virus.

Whats The Delta Variant Of The Coronavirus

Viruses frequently change by mutating, including the coronavirus. Its challenging to know the exact number of variants out there globally or in Texas, health experts say.

Checking for these variants happens by analyzing a random sample of COVID-19 tests, so there is a possibility that some mutations might be missed. With all viruses, some variants eventually disappear while others persist. Only time will tell how different variants will affect people and how extensive they will be. The most effective way to curb new variants is to prevent spreading the virus and avoid giving it a chance to mutate.

That delta variant, known by scientists as B.1.617.2, was first identified in India. It triggered a devastating outbreak there in April and May and has since spread to at least 100 other countries, attacking areas where vaccination rates are the lowest.
