As an immunologist, I hear this question frequently and the answer has changed as new genetic strains of the coronavirus become more common. , the delta variant had become the most dominant strain of SARS-CoV-2 circulating in the U.S.
The Moderna and Pfizer mRNA vaccines werent designed specifically to ward off the delta variant. While overall they still provide excellent protection after the full two doses, new research suggests a single dose provides less immunity against the coronavirus strains that are out there now than it did against the original strain.
Bottom line: Two shots are way better than one.
How Long Does It Take For The Covid
If you or a loved one has gotten a COVID-19 vaccine already, congratulations! This is an important step in protecting individuals and the public from the spread of this deadly virus.

Lets start with a common question.
How long does it take for the COVID-19 vaccine to work?
Regardless of which vaccine you get, you wont reach full protection until two weeks after your second or final dose. Thats about how long it takes your immune system to mount an antibody response to the vaccine.
All vaccines work this way. Think of it in terms of when you have a coldit takes your body a good amount of time to rid itself of whats making you sick. A vaccine is essentially faking out your immune system and triggering a similar response. After the shot, your body has some work to do.

How Does Immunity Work
Immunity refers to how your immune system protects you from different infections, like viruses and bacteria. One way it does this is through white blood cells circulating in your blood. The main types of white blood cells are listed below.
Macrophages attack and break down germs when they enter your body. After this, they leave behind parts of the germ , which are then attacked by certain antibodies .
B lymphocytes produce different types of antibodies, which are proteins that attack antigens left behind by macrophages. The first time the body is exposed to a certain infection, it can take 7 to 10 days for antibodies to form, and they are specific to that infection. The next time your body gets that infection, your B cells will quickly make those specific antibodies to fight the infection.
T lymphocytes attack cells in the body that have already been infected by the bacteria or virus. After the infection has passed, your body keeps a few T cells, called memory cells, that are ready to fight that infection again if you get it.

How Long The Pfizer Vaccine Takes To Fully Protect You From Covid
If you receive the Pfizer vaccine, youâll be given two shots, around 21 days or three weeks apart. âIndividuals are usually considered fully vaccinated two weeks after the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine,â Dr. Robert Quigley, M.D., global medical director of medical and security risk mitigation company International SOS, tells Bustle. Pfizer and Modernaâs vaccines are up to 90% protective against COVID after the first shot in real-life conditions, according to a study of U.S. essential workers published by the CDC on March 29, but to receive their full benefits, you need to wait for a fortnight after your second dose. This is because your body is taking two weeks to build up multiple levels of effective immunity in your cells.
How Does Immunity From A Vaccine Compare To Immunity From Infection
Vaccine-induced immunity and natural immunity both provide protection against getting the infection in the future. Which one provides better immunity can depend on the type of infection it is.
We are still learning about COVID-19 and immunity, but a recent study showed that vaccine-induced immunity was better than natural immunity in protecting against COVID-19. Getting the vaccine also allowed the immune system to recognize other coronavirus strains, which could provide protection against new variants that develop.
An important advantage of any vaccine-induced immunity is that you can get immunity without actually getting sick. For COVID-19, this is especially important because even if you recover from it, many people continue to have debilitating symptoms for months.

Do You Still Need To Take Precautions After Being Vaccinated
If youve received both doses of the vaccine, its important to still continue to take precautions, including:
- Wearing a mask.Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth when youre around people outside of your household.
- Hand-washing.Hand-washing is particularly important after being out in public, after coughing and sneezing, and after using the bathroom.
- Practicing physical distancing. Try to stay at least 6 feet away from people outside of your household.
- Avoiding crowded areas. Places that are crowded or poorly ventilated can make it easier to contract and transmit the virus.
These precautions are important because we currently dont know whether people whove been vaccinated can still spread the virus to others, even if they themselves dont develop symptoms.
Does Moderna Need Covid
Moderna made it clear that booster shots will be necessary in the fall to fight off the delta variant. The findings of the duration of efficacy were discovered before the delta variant became more common in the United States.
- We believe a dose three of a booster will likely be necessary to keep us as safe as possible through the winter season in the Northern Hemisphere, Dr. Stephen Hoge, president of Moderna, said during an earnings call when the data was released, according to The New York Times.

Cdc Report Finds That Covid
This percentage, however, takes into account both Alpha and Delta variants, rather than addressing the Delta variant specifically. Before the Delta variants predominance, this percentage was closer to 91%. After it became predominant in the summer months, the number from this study dropped to about 66%. Today, the Delta variant represents almost 99% of U.S. COVID-19 cases.
However, this study doesnt represent everyone it only comes from about 3,000 vaccinated frontline workers across eight different U.S. locations. The report also cautioned that these findings might be impacted by how long ago some completed their vaccination series, since general vaccine effectiveness may go down over time.
What this means: Preliminary data says that COVID-19 vaccines may provide less protection against the Delta variant compared to previous strains of the virus, but theyre still considered effective.
What this doesnt mean: COVID-19 vaccines arent effective against the Delta variant. COVID-19 vaccines, in addition to other precautions, remain the best defense against COVID-19.

Can I Get My First Covid
The CDC strongly recommends against that. The COVID-19 vaccines are not interchangeable and the impact of switching has not been studied, according to the latest guidelines. However, the CDC said people may switch from one authorized COVID-19 vaccine in exceptional situations in which the first-dose vaccine product cannot be determined or is no longer available.

When Will Covid
People with compromised immune systems: The CDC recommends that people with moderately to severely compromised immune systems receive an additional dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine at least 28 days after a second dose of Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. UC Davis Health is contacting patients who meet the CDCs criteria to make appointments for the third dose shot.
General public: The CDC recommends that the general public wait eight months after their second COVID-19 vaccine to get a booster shot of Pfizer or Moderna. For a very select group who were in the first round of vaccinations, that will begin in September.
Can I Get Covid
There is no way you can get COVID-19 from the vaccine. The novel coronavirus vaccine includes a small fragment of messanger RNA that encodes for a small portion of the protein. The mRNA cant replicate, and it’s very unstable so it doesn’t last long. It can’t cause COVID-19. None of the COVID-19 vaccines currently in development in the U.S. use the live virus that causes COVID-19.

What Is The Difference Between Vaccine Efficacy And Effectiveness
All new vaccines must undergo clinical trials in which researchers test the vaccines on thousands of people to examine how well they work and whether they are safe.
Efficacy is the measure of how well a vaccine works in clinical trials. Researchers design the trials to include two groups of people: those who receive the vaccine and those who receive a placebo. They calculate the vaccines efficacy by comparing how many cases of the illness occur in each group, vaccinated versus placebo.
Effectiveness, on the other hand, describes how well a vaccine performs in the real world. It is calculated the same way, by comparing illness among vaccinated and unvaccinated people.
Efficacy and effectiveness are usually close to each other but wont necessarily be the same. How the vaccines work will vary a bit from the trial results once millions of people are getting vaccinated.
Many factors influence how a vaccine performs in the real world. New variants like delta and omicron may change things. The number and age of people enrolled in the trials matter. And the health of those receiving the vaccine is also important.
The distinction between efficacy and effectiveness is important, because one describes the risk reduction achieved by the vaccines under trial conditions and the other describes how this may vary in populations with different exposures and transmission levels. Researchers can calculate both, but they cant design a study that will measure both simultaneously.

One of the most pressing questions about COVID-19 vaccines is how long they can provide protection.
It may be decades, or a matter of months the data necessary to figure that out is accumulating every day. Pfizers CEO said this week that after a full regimen of doses immunity will probably start to fade within a year. According to the WHO, its simply too early to know the exact duration of COVID-19 vaccines because both the disease and the science deployed against it arent yet fully understood.
Some early evidence is promising. The viruses that caused MERS and SARS are closely related to the virus behind COVID-19, and acquired immunity to both of those diseases has proved relatively durable.
In terms of COVID-19-specific research, Pfizer and BioNTech said earlier this month that their vaccine remains effective for at least half a year after the second dose, and a study of Modernas version reflected a similar duration. Immunization efforts will have to play out further before we can know more for certain.

Aug 5 – Moderna Inc said on Thursday its COVID-19 shot was about 93% effective through six months after the second dose, showing hardly any change from the 94% efficacy reported in its original clinical trial.
However, it said it still expects booster shots to be necessary ahead of the winter season as antibody levels are expected to wane. It and rival Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE have been advocating a third shot to maintain a high level of protection against COVID-19.
During a second-quarter earnings call, Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said that the company would not produce more than the 800 million to 1 billion doses of the vaccine that it has targeted this year.
“We are now capacity constrained for 2021, and we are not taking any more orders for 2021 delivery,” he said.
Moderna shares fell 3.6% to around $403.87 in pre-market trading after closing at $419.05 on Wednesday.
The Moderna data compares favorably to that released by Pfizer and BioNTech last week in which they said their vaccine’s efficacy waned around 6% every two months, declining to around 84% six months after the second shot.
Both the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines are based on messenger RNA technology.
The Cdcs First Coronavirus Tests Were Contaminated And Poorly Designed The Agency Says
The faulty coronavirus testing kits developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the early weeks of the pandemic were not only contaminated but had a basic design flaw, according to an internal review by the agency.
Health officials had already acknowledged that the test kits were contaminated, but the internal report, whose findings were published in PLOS ONE on Wednesday, also documented a design error that caused false positives.
The distribution of faulty test kits, at a time when no other tests were authorized, set back health officials efforts to detect and track the virus.
It delayed the availability of more widespread testing, said Dr. Benjamin Pinsky, the director of clinical virology for Stanford Health Care. He added, I think its important that they got to the bottom of what went wrong.
In January 2020, the C.D.C. developed a polymerase chain reaction, or P.C.R., test for the virus. P.C.R. tests, which are performed in laboratories, can detect the virus at very low levels and have been considered the gold standard for diagnosing a coronavirus infection.
Problems emerged soon after the C.D.C. had begun shipping its test kits out to public health laboratories in early February. Within days, many labs were reporting that the tests were generating inconclusive results.

Vaccination Can Help Prevent Complications From Covid
The CDC recently published three different reports about potential COVID-19 vaccine benefits. Data about how well the vaccines work against the Delta variant is somewhat limited, so these reports aim to help fill this gap.
The first report used data collected between early April and mid-July 2021 in 13 different U.S. jurisdictions. This was a large study that analyzed about 600,000 cases, almost 38,000 hospitalizations, and over 6,000 deaths related to COVID-19.
The report found that fully vaccinated people compared to people not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 are about 5 times less likely to be infected with COVID-19 and more than 10 times less likely to be hospitalized or pass away due to complications from COVID-19. This report includes data from the Delta variant.
What this means: Being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 helps lower your risk against infection and COVID-19-related complications.
What this doesnt mean: COVID-19 vaccines are the only way to lower your virus-related risks. If you arent fully vaccinated, you can still help protect yourself in other ways.

Is It Still Possible To Get Covid
Both vaccines are among the most effective vaccines in history. They are as effective if not more than vaccines for polio, chicken pox, measles and the flu.
The chances of getting sick after vaccination are minimal. Studies show even if you develop COVID-19 after being vaccinated, you are unlikely to get severely ill. Flu vaccines are less effective than the COVID vaccines, but they can protect you from more severe flu illness and hospitalization. The COVID-19 vaccines are even more powerful. Of the more than 30,000 people who received the vaccination during the research trials, only one developed a severe case. The efficacy of the vaccines in the prevention of severe COVID-19 is almost 100%.
