How Long Does Immunity Last
The immune system’s memory is rather like our own – it remembers some infections clearly, but has a habit of forgetting others.
Measles is highly memorable – one bout should give lifelong immunity . However, there are many others that are pretty forgettable. Children can get RSV multiple times in the same winter.
The new coronavirus, Sars-CoV-2, has not been around long enough to know how long immunity lasts.
But a recent study led by Public Health England shows most people who have had the virus are protected from catching it again for at least five months .
Some are reinfected, however, and, even if asymptomatic, can then harbour high levels of the virus in their noses and mouths, which can be passed on to others.
PHE will continue to monitor the people in this study, who are all healthcare workers, to see how long immunity lasts.
Other clues may come from studies involving other coronaviruses.
Four produce the symptoms of the common cold and immunity is short-lived. Studies showed some patients could be re-infected within a year.
Research at King’s College London also suggested levels of antibodies that kill coronavirus waned over the three month study.
But even if antibodies disappear, then the cells that manufacture them, called B cells, may still be around. B cells for Spanish Flu have been found in people 90 years after that pandemic.
If the same is true with Covid, then a second infection would be milder than the first.
If I Have Antibodies Am I Immune
This is not guaranteed and that is why the World Health Organization is nervous about countries using immunity passports as a way out of lockdown.
The idea is if you pass the antibody test then you are safe to go back to work. This would be particularly valuable for staff in care homes or hospitals who come into contact with those at risk of developing severe symptoms.
But while you will find some antibodies in nearly every patient, not all are equal. Neutralising antibodies are the ones that stick to the coronavirus and are able to stop it infecting other cells. A study of 175 recovered patients in China showed 30% had very low levels of these neutralising antibodies.
That is why the World Health Organization says “that cellular immunity may also be critical for recovery”.
Another issue is that just because you might be protected by your antibodies, it doesn’t mean you cannot still harbour the virus and pass it onto others.

Health experts say the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are safe following rare incidents of heart inflammation, mostly among young men and teenage boys.
There have been more than 300 verified cases of myocarditis among 12- to 29-year-olds in the U.S. believed to be related to the mRNA vaccines. More than 140 million people in the country have been fully vaccinated with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.
Most of the myocarditis patients experienced symptoms a few days after the second shot. Of 309 people who were hospitalized, 218 of them have recovered from their symptoms. As of last week, nine patients were still hospitalized and two of them were in the ICU, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
I think its important to be aware of risk, but also to weigh risk in an informed fashion, said Howard Julien, a Penn Medicine cardiologist and assistant professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

There is currently no conclusive evidence that points to how long coronavirus immunity lasts. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , there have been recorded cases of coronavirus reinfection.

What Are The Concerns Around Breakthrough Infections
On an individual level, health experts are concerned if a breakthrough infection leads to serious illness.
On a societal level, they are concerned about whether someone with a breakthrough infection can pass the virus on to others.
If people dont know that they are infected but can pass it on, they may not be taking as many precautions to protect others, and theres an increased chance of spread within society, said Dr. Stanley Weiss, professor of medicine at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and professor of biostatistics and epidemiology at the Rutgers School of Public Health.
Currently, Weiss said, theres not enough information about variants among people with mild breakthrough infections, therefore health experts dont have a true picture of whats occurring.
We dont know that much yet in the general population about the prevalence of breakthrough infection for people who arent seriously ill because we havent been doing that much testing and surveillance on that issue, he said. The evolving information, though, suggests that its possible for these people who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms to spread the infection to others. The data that has come out recently has shown that with the delta variant you have a much higher amount of virus in the nasal and oral pharynx, than the original Wuhan strain. What Are The Health Risks Of Getting The Vaccine After An Infection
There have been some exceedingly rare adverse events, including blood clots and myocarditis. But for most of those cases, the patients recovered quickly and showed no evidence of long-term consequences.
Wherry said most of the people who had the rare blood clots and allergic reactions did not previously have COVID-19.

Am I Still Infectious After Recovering
Probably to some extent, though the first batch of studies is far from conclusive as to how long it lasts. Provisional research from Germany has suggested that COVID-19 infectiousness in contrast to the 2003 SARS outbreak peaks early and that recovering patients with mild symptoms become low-risk around 10 days after they first fall ill. But another study, following four medical professionals treated at a Wuhan hospital, revealed that traces of the virus could persist in the body for up to two weeks after symptoms had vanished; as the patients were no longer coughing or sneezing, the potential means of transmission were albeit much reduced. Less optimistic was a study published last week in The Lancet medical journal that showed the virus survived in one Chinese patients respiratory tract for 37 days well above the average of 24 days for those with critical disease status.

Herd immunity happens when a large part of the population — the herd — is immune to a virus. This can happen either because these people got vaccinated or had already been infected. Herd immunity makes it harder for a virus to spread. So even those who haven’t been sick or vaccinated have some protection.
The more contagious a virus is, the more people need to be immune for herd immunity to kick in. The SARS-CoV-2 virus is so contagious that experts estimate about 70% of people in a community will need to be immune to have herd protection. Having;vaccines should help eventually achieve that goal.;
How Do We Become Immune
When germs enter your body, your immune system springs into action. Here’s how it works:
- Bacteria and viruses like the one that causes COVID-19 have proteins called antigens on their surfaces. Each type of germ has its own unique antigen.
- White blood cells of your immune system make proteins called antibodies to fight the antigen. Antibodies attach to antigens the way a key fits into a lock, and they destroy the invading germ.
- Once you’ve been exposed to a virus, your body makes memory cells. If you’re exposed to that same virus again, these cells recognize it. They tell your immune system to make antibodies against it.
Vaccines work in much the same way. They expose your body to an antigen that trains your immune system to fight that germ in the future. Because vaccines contain weakened or killed versions of viruses, you become immune without getting sick.

What Is A Breakthrough Covid Infection How Can I Avoid It
This is one of a series of articles in which reporters from WHYYs Health Desk Help Desk answer questions about vaccines and COVID-19 submitted by you, our audience.
In the last few weeks, a new idea has pushed into the pandemic conversation about aggressive variants and vaccinations: breakthrough COVID.

But these numbers also came out of the Provincetown cases: Only four of the fully vaccinated people were hospitalized, and no deaths were reported. Currently, more than 97% of people in the United States being admitted to hospitals with COVID-19 symptoms are unvaccinated, and about 99% of deaths also are among the unvaccinated.
Will The Common Cold Give Me Immunity To Coronavirus
The jury is still out on the field of “cross-reactivity” but there may be some infections that look similar enough to the virus that causes Covid that people may gain some protection.
Laboratory tests show the T cells some people made to fight Sars or common cold coronaviruses can also react against the new coronavirus.
How common this is and how much protection it gives is still unknown.

How Long Do Covid
The new study found that 98.8% of people infected with coronavirus in February and March 2020 had detectable levels of antibodies in November, according to Imperial College London.
The study which was published in Nature Communications said there was no difference between people who had suffered symptoms of COVID-19 and those that had been symptom-free.
- To find this, researchers tested more than 85% of 3,000 residents in Italy, who had been infected in February and March 2020. The researchers tested those people again in May 2020 and November 2020.
However, the researchers said the antibody levels were different depending on how the patients were tested, showing some people might not have the same level of antibodies as others.
