How Long Cvs Covid Test Results

How long will it take for your COVID-19 test results to come back?

Truslow was initially told it would take two to four days. Then CVS said five or six days. On the sixth day, the pharmacy estimated it would take 10 days.

This is outrageous, said Truslow, 30, who has been quarantining at home since attending a large rally at the school to demonstrate support of Black Lives Matter. Truslow has never had any symptoms. At this point, the test findings hardly matter anymore.

Truslows experience is an extreme example of the growing and often excruciating waits for COVID-19 test results in the United States.

While hospital patients can get the findings back within a day, people getting tested at urgent care centers, community health centers, pharmacies and government-run drive-thru or walk-up sites are often waiting a week or more. In the spring, it was generally three or four days.

The problems mean patients and their physicians dont have information necessary to know whether to change their behavior. Health experts advise people to act as if they have COVID-19 while waiting meaning to self-quarantine and limit exposure to others. But they acknowledge thats not realistic if people have to wait a week or more.

Weve been testing for months now in America, she added. The fact that we cant quickly get results back so that other people are not unintentionally exposed is the reason we are continuing in this spiral with COVID-19.

The problem is that labs running the tests are overwhelmed as demand has soared in the past month.

Unsure of what to expect, I arrived at the site 15 minutes early. I brought the following items with me, and I suggest you do the same:

  • A face mask
  • Documentation that confirmed my appointment
  • Tissues for post-test purposes

I was directed to the back of a parking lot that was meticulously adorned with traffic cones. This was one of the first things I noticed the traffic cones were out in force. Hundreds of cones carved up the huge parking lot, funneling cars through the testing system in a remarkably organized fashion.

My first stop was at the check-in juncture. There, I pulled my car up to a man wearing a mask. With my mask on safely, I began rolling down my window, to which the man promptly responded, please roll your window up.

This would become a theme. Patients were to only crack our driver-side window about 3-4 inches when communicating with a site worker.

Then, when all essential verbal communication was done, the window gets rolled up all the way. Any necessary exchange of information that could be done with a sealed window between us was handled that way.

For example, when I checked in, the man told me that he needed to see my appointment confirmation text message and I.D., which I would present to him by sticking them up to my closed window.

I then entered a four-lane cone-way that led to the testing queue.

I pulled my car up to a CVS Health care provider wearing full PPE white gown, gloves, face mask, and a face shield.

  • Roll up my window.
  • Remove my mask.
  • Check Out What People Are Saying On Twitter

Sometimes Twitter has the worlds most transparent, honest and up-to-date reviews. Before I went to get a coronavirus test in New York City, I did some sleuthing to see what people were saying about the testing places near me. The location I ultimately went to had a decent number of Twitter replies from patients saying they got their results back in a few days. Other urgent care centers were being tagged by people complaining that it had been upwards of two weeks with no results. Its worth poking around on social media to get a sense of what people are experiencing in your community.

    What Is An Antibody Test

These tests, called serological tests, take a small amount of blood and test it to see if it has antibodies that fight COVID-19. This means that they are likely already ill.

Since up to 50% of people are asymptomatic, antibody testing can reveal who is best prepared to return to work or school to help in the hospital. Also, more people will know if they can donate plasma that can save lives.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, this test does not detect the virus itself, but the bodys immune response to infections caused by the virus.

Long Lines And Delayed Results Again Plague Coronavirus Tests As Thanksgiving Approaches

Americans seeking coronavirus tests amid an unprecedented surge in cases are experiencing lengthier lines and waiting days to get test results delays that complicate efforts to slow the pandemic and that are expected to intensify as people try to get tested ahead of family gatherings.

Testing sites from New York to Wisconsin to Oregon are reporting lines stretching three to four hours, with results taking as long as five days.

In Denver, officials shut down one testing site within an hour of opening Tuesday because it had reached capacity. At another site, lines grew so long that officials closed over concerns about traffic safety. In New York, residents are standing in line for hours. In Olympia, Wash., officials have had to turn away as many as 200 cars in line in recent days because labs had reached capacity.

When Sarah Hass, 22, recently tried to book a coronavirus test in the Chicago suburbs, she couldnt find a clinic with an open appointment in the next three days. She widened her search to any CVS or Walgreens within a two-hour drive. Still nothing.

Finally, she headed to a drive-through testing site set up by state authorities in a vacant parking lot in the southwest suburb of Aurora, Ill.

For three hours, she inched along in the torturous caravan.

Jaques and other testing officials said they worry that the long lines and delays could dissuade people from getting tested at a time when fast and widespread testing is critical.

    What Type Of Covid

What’s it like to take a COVID-19 test?

Antigen test. Rapid test. PCR test. RT-PCR test. Antibody test. If youve taken a COVID-19 test during the pandemic, you might have been bewildered by the sheer number of options.

Keeping track of which COVID-19 test you need can seem daunting. Not all COVID-19 tests are created equal and not all are suitable for international travel.

What youll usually need for travel is a PCR test . These are the most reliable tests for detecting active COVID-19 infections and are considered the gold standard of testing. In this guide, well primarily focus on testing sites that provide these more accurate PCR tests, though keep in mind that some destinations like Hawaii only accept PCR tests from a specific list of testing providers.

The tests that often wont help you with travel are antibody tests, blood tests that can identify if a previous COVID-19 infection caused your immune system to produce COVID-19 antibodies. Some countries also wont accept rapid antigen tests, which check for proteins on the viruss surface. These tests are popular for their quick turnaround times but are less accurate than PCR tests.

How Samples Are Tested To Detect The Virus

For laboratory-based testing, such as molecular PCR:

    • samples are sent to a laboratory for analysis
    • results are generally provided in 1 to 3 days

    For point-of-care testing:

    • sample collection and testing is done at the time and place of care, such as a hospital or doctor’s office
    • results are provided while you wait

Point-of-care technology can only test a limited number of samples in a single machine. Because of this, it’s used in places where it’s needed most, including:

    • rural, remote and isolated communities
    • specific high-risk settings where it’s important to have fast test results without having to send samples to a laboratory

A positive laboratory-based or point-of-care test means that you currently have COVID-19.

Understand That Where You Live Can Have An Impact

This isnt a tip on getting results faster, but rather something to keep in mind: When it comes down to it, where youre getting tested matters. The higher the number of cases in your area, the more backlog youll likely experience.

The ability to expedite the testing process will likely vary by geographic region, Dean said. Areas with more testing accessibility will have additional resources available to residents, while areas with surging COVID-19 cases may not have as much ability to rapidly process testing.

Of course, none of this is certain every city and state is different. The most important thing is to get tested, regardless of how long results will take, if you think you have the coronavirus or have been exposed to someone who has it.

And, as always, continue to wear your mask and socially distance. That will help prevent you and others from having to deal with the disease in the future.

Experts are still learning about the novel coronavirus. The information in this story is what was known or available as of press time, but its possible guidance around COVID-19 could change as scientists discover more about the virus. Please check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the most updated recommendations.
