How long can you test positive after a COVID-19 test?
  • Ensure that other people do not come into contact with your bodily fluids, such as spit, snot, sweat, faeces and urine.
  • Put your dirty washing in a separate washing basket and wash it at 40 degrees or more on a full cycle using normal detergent.
  • Put your dirty plates, cutlery, cups and glasses in the dishwasher on a full cycle. Or wash them by hand separately from the other washing up. Use normal washing up liquid and hot water.

When Are You Most Infectious With Covid

For previous variants of Covid-19, such as Alpha and Delta, the World Health Organisation said symptoms could begin to develop anywhere between two days and two weeks after infection.

However, the incubation period for Omicron and its offshoots is believed to be much shorter between three and five days.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said in December, after Omicron emerged: Recent analysis from the UK Health Security Agency suggests that the window between infection and infectiousness may be shorter for the Omicron variant than the Delta variant.

Data show that the majority of people are no longer infectious seven days after beginning to experience symptoms or first testing positive, particularly when vaccinated, and the vast majority are no longer infectious after 10 days.

When You Do Not Need To Self

If you live with or have been in contact with someone with COVID-19, you will not need to self-isolate if any of the following apply:

If you have COVID-19 symptoms again more than 12 weeks after your recover, stay home and get tested.

If you get a positive result, complete 7 days of isolation. If you have a negative result, stay home until you no longer have symptoms.

Some Test Positive For Covid For 10 Days Or Longer

At-home antigen tests may return positive results for 10 days — or even longer, up to 14 days, according to The New York Times. Public health experts have said itâs been difficult to understand what that means in terms of contagiousness since rapid tests canât always predict that with accuracy.

âSome people may not be infectious at the end of their course, even if still antigen-positive, whereas others may be infectious, even if antigen-negative,â Yonatan Grad, MD, , an immunologist and infectious disease expert at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, told the newspaper.

Rapid antigen tests detect proteins on the outside of the coronavirus, which can accurately pinpoint people who carry high levels of the virus. Studies have suggested that most people stop testing positive on these tests within the first 10 days of infection.

But a growing group of people seem to be testing positive for longer. This could mean that some people may be shedding viral particles for a longer period or that the tests are picking up leftover viral debris as their infection fades, the Times reported.

A few recent preprint studies, which havenât yet been peer-reviewed, have indicated that some people who get the Omicron variant may test positive for longer and spread the virus for longer than previous strains.

What Should You Do If You Test Positive For Covid

If you test positive for COVID-19, you should follow instructions from your doctor and the CDC about isolation. And you can end your isolation after just five days if you never developed symptoms but should continue wearing a mask for a total of 10 days, according to the latest guidelines from the CDC.

Or, if you did develop symptoms, you can leave isolation after you’ve been without a fever for 24 hours , provided your other symptoms are resolving as well. That can be as early as after five full days of isolation, the CDC says. Continue to mask around other people for another five days.

The CDC also amended its guidelines to add that, if you have access to a rapid antigen test, you can take the test at the end of day five of your isolation . If it’s negative, you can use that result to feel more confident about leaving isolation at that time, but continue to mask. If it’s positive, the CDC says you should continue isolating through day 10.

Regardless of when you end isolation, anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 should take precautions for 10 full days, the CDC says including masking around others, avoiding travel and limiting contact with people who have a high risk for severe COVID-19.

How Long Do People Normally Test Positive For Covid

In the most general terms, people will likely test positive on an at-home rapid COVID-19 test for about six to 10 days, Dr. Stephen Kissler, a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in the department of immunology and infectious diseases, told TODAY.

And when it comes to PCR tests, people may test positive for even longer, Dr. Alberto Paniz-Mondolfi, associate professor of pathology, molecular and cell-based medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, explained. “You can still have positivity that may persist for weeks and even months,” he explained, noting that positive tests on PCR have been recorded for up to 60 days.

But there are a lot of factors that can affect the number of days someone may test positive.

Considering that different tests may perform differently and you have a context of a virus that is in constant evolution, and then you have all these variants, youre changing the variables of the equation over and over again, said Paniz-Mondolfi, who also leads the Saliva COVID Test Lab at Mount Sinai. That makes it difficult to predict exactly how long someone may test positive.

Even with a rapid test, it’s not unheard of for people to test positive up to 14 days, especially for those who are unvaccinated, Kissler said. “We see a ton of variation between people in how long they test positive,” he explained. “While that average is closer to six to 10 days, there are people who will hang on for longer than that.”

What Type Of Test Should You Use

After an exposure, experts recommend that you take an at-home test.

An at-home test is a type of rapid antigen test, also called a rapid diagnostic test. It checks nasal swab samples for proteins in the coronavirus.

Before using an at-home test, its helpful to blow your nose. Having too much mucus in your nose can dilute the sample and increase the risk of a false negative result.

You can perform this test anywhere, so its very convenient. It also provides results in about 15 minutes.

What You Should Do If You Keep Testing Positive After 10 Days

Testing positive for Covid doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re contagious. Rapid tests detect certain protein pieces of the virus, but those proteins alone don’t cause infection. The same goes for PCR tests, which identify the virus’ genetic material in your system.

So, to work out if positive tests mean people are infectious, scientists culture samples from these tests in petri dishes to see if more virus can grow, indicating that it’s still alive and contagious. A recent Boston University study, which has yet to be peer-reviewed, used this technique and found that just 17% of people were likely still contagious six days after their first positive tests.

Unfortunately, there’s currently no way to know which category you’re in. But most experts say that as long as your symptoms are gone, you probably don’t need to isolate anymore.

The CDC recommends isolating for five days after you first test positive, and ending your quarantine as long as you’ve been fever-free for 24 hours and your symptoms are improving. Dr. Monica Gandhi, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco, says she’d “feel really comfortable” with a symptom-free person emerging after five days of isolation, even if they’re still testing positive for Covid.

Can My Employer Require A Negative Covid

Several workplaces have implemented COVID-19 screening to help prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2. The CDC guides workplaces on implementing these testing strategies in non-healthcare settings. They do not recommend requiring a negative COVID-19 test result before returning to work.

According to the Americans with Disabilities Act , employers who implement mandatory COVID-19 testing of employees must ensure that the testing is job-related and consistent with a business necessity. The purpose of the program should be to identify current infections.

Based on the evidence of continued positive results for months after illness, the CDC recommends a time-based and symptom-based strategy for determining when a person can return to work. This strategy means that people should follow the CDC guidelines for five days of isolation and should not return to work unless their symptoms improve or resolve.

According to the ADA, employers can require a healthcare providers note certifying fitness for duty after a COVID-19 infection. Public health organizations stress that this requirement could be burdensome, since healthcare professionals may be too busy to provide fitness for duty documentation.

The CDC recommends that employers should consider not requiring a healthcare providers note for employees to return to work. However, some employers require it anyway.
