What If I Test Positive For The Coronavirus
If results show that you’ve been infected with COVID-19, make sure to let everyone you’ve come in close contact with in the last two weeks know. Ask your doctor for the next steps. We also have some guidelines for taking care of yourself if you’re infected with the virus.
Contact tracing, which is a system that helps identify people you’ve come into close contact with, can help stem the spread to others.
The CDC says you can leave the house again once you’ve had no fever for at least 24 hours , symptoms like coughing have improved and at least 10 days have passed since your symptoms first appeared, but you should seek guidance from your doctor on when it’s safe to leave the house.
Can I Be Tested Without Symptoms
Testing is only available free if you have cold or flu symptoms, loss of taste/smell or have been asked by Public Health or required under Essential Traveller status to get tested.
If you want to get tested but have no symptoms of COVID-19 and Public Health has not asked you to get tested, talk to your GP. There will be a charge for the test and your consultation with the GP.

Covid: When To Get Tested For The Coronavirus And How Long It Will Take To Get Results
How do you know when you should get tested for the coronavirus? The time it takes to get test results back depends on where you go and which test is administered. Here’s what we know about COVID-19 testing now.
It may take more than a week to get your coronavirus test results back.
With coronavirus cases continuing to grow in the US and around the world, and projections that more people could become infected as we head into flu season, questions abound about who should get tested and how long it could take to find out the results.
Fortunately, many states have made it easier to get coronavirus tests than in the first months of the pandemic, but the amount of time it takes to get your results back varies based on where you go and which test is administered.
In most cases, the testing facility should let you know a time frame for getting your coronavirus results back, but that can vary from hours to even a week or longer, especially if confusion over flulike versus coronavirus-like symptoms causes test result delays. Here’s what we know about when to get tested, how long it takes to get tested and how to find out your results.

What Happens After I Get Tested
A positive COVID-19 test means you currently have or recently had the virus. Monitor your symptoms and get medical help right away if you have trouble breathing, confusion, or bluish lips or face.
Take steps to avoid spreading the virus:
- Stay home, except to get medical care.
- Stay away from other people in your home.
- Wear a mask when you are around others in the house
- Dont share dishes, cups, eating utensils, or linens with others.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes. Wash your hands often.
- Clean and disinfect common surfaces like phones, doorknobs, or counters regularly.
If your test is positive and you have COVID-19 symptoms, you should isolate yourself until you meet all these criteria:
- Its been at least 10 days since your symptoms began.
- Your symptoms have improved.
- You havent had a fever for at least 24 hours, without using any fever-reducing medication.
If you tested positive but didnt have symptoms, isolate yourself for 10 days after the test.
Talk to your doctor about whether you should get tested again after isolation. There is no need to be retested if you have been in quarantine for 10 to 14 days.
If your COVID-19 test is negative, you probably didnt have the virus at the time of the test. But you can still get sick later. Follow distancing guidelines, and wash your hands often.

When Will I Be Able To Leave Isolation After A Positive Test For Coronavirus
You must isolate until you receive clearance from the Department of Health. An officer from the department will call you to explain what this means and answer any questions you may have.
The Department of Health or an authorised health worker will do an assessment and decide if your isolation can end. This will depend on:
- the amount of time since your symptoms began usually between 10 to 14 days
- how sick you have been
- how much your symptoms have improved
- whether you have a weakened immune system prone to infection
- whether you have had a more infectious strain of COVID-19
- results from any testing that the department may have asked you to do.
The department will give you written clearance that says you are no longer required to isolate. You will then be able to return to your normal activities in line with any restrictions in place at your location.
You must continue to isolate until you are cleared.

How To Find Your National Health Index Number

You can find your NHI number on:
- a prescription or prescription receipt
- a prescription medicine bottle label

If you can’t find your NHI, your general practice or pharmacist may be able to assist. Dont worry if youre not enrolled with a GP. Your NHI will be found or assigned when you next use health and disability support services in New Zealand.
For people currently overseas if youre planning to come to New Zealand and do not have an NHI number, you will be assigned one when you arrive. If you are coming from Australia, you will be assigned an NHI number when you use health and disability services in New Zealand.
What’s The Difference Between The Pcr And Antigen Tests For Covid
There are two types of tests for COVID-19: the PCR test and the antigen test.
- Polymerase chain reaction . This tests for the presence of the actual viruss genetic material or its fragments as it breaks down. PCR is the most reliable and accurate test for detecting active infection. PCR tests typically take hours to perform, but some are faster.
- Antigen test: This detects bits of proteins on the surface of the virus called antigens. Antigen tests typically take only 15 to 30 minutes. Rapid antigen tests are most accurate when used within a few days of the start of your symptoms, which is when the largest amount of virus is present in your body.
