There have been confirmed cases of reinfection with COVID-19. In other words, a person got sick with COVID-19, recovered, and then became infected again. Its also worth noting that someone who has been reinfected even someone with no symptoms has the potential to spread the virus to others.

Have I Waited Too Long For Covid Testing

Scientists agree that the incubation period for the virus can be up to 14 days. At this time, you may develop flu-like symptoms including fever or chills, body aches, headaches and nausea, and exhaustion. The most distinctive characteristic of Covid-19, however, is the lack of taste and smell for individuals.

Some people may develop mild symptoms of the disease, and simply decide that they have it based on their symptoms. However, it is important that you get tested, even if you believe your case to be mild. You may be asked to fill out a tracing report, helping others that youve been in contact with know if theyve been exposed to the virus. This can help slow the spread of disease or may help people who have been exposed get treatment early, to reduce the chances of severe complications.

With a longer incubation than most types of viruses, people may falsely test negative for up to 5 days after exposure to Covid. Others may not realize that they have the virus, if they arent showing symptoms and no one around them, at work or home, is showing symptoms of the virus. However, its just this asymptomatic nature of Covid-19 that makes it important to have regular testing, especially if youre a front line worker, to ensure that you arent passing the virus to others.

Who Should Get Tested For Covid

Your healthcare provider may recommend testing for COVID-19 if you have any of the following symptoms:

    • Fever or chills.
    • Nausea or vomiting.
    • Diarrhea.

Not everyone with COVID-19 develops symptoms. And not all symptomatic people develop all of the symptoms listed above. Please check with your healthcare provider if youre feeling unwell during the COVID-19 pandemic even if youve been vaccinated.

What To Do Next After Receiving Your Test Results

How Long Does it Take to get COVID-19 Test Results?

A positive result with an RT-PCR or antigen test means that you currently have an active coronavirus infection and should take the necessary steps to take care of yourself, self-isolate, and contact anyone who you may have been in contact with recently. False positives are generally rare, but they are not unheard of. Any positive result should be taken seriously, and you should immediately inform your healthcare provider.

While negative results from one of these tests can be reassuring, note that false negatives can occur based on when you were potentially exposed to the virus and the time that you took the test. For example, if you were tested immediately after exposure, you may not have enough of the virus in your system to show up on the test, resulting in negative results.

Antibody test results do not indicate whether you currently have an ongoing infection. Also note that, even with a positive result on an antibody test, there is no concrete evidence that the antibodies detected by these tests can actually prevent future infections. So until we know more about the virus and develop a feasible vaccine, do not consider yourself immune to the virus based on the results of an antibody test. That means taking all the necessary precautions, like wearing a mask and practicing proper social distancing, to protect yourself and those around you.
