How Many Americans Died From Covid

This Story Is Part Of A Group Of Stories Called

How many people could die from coronavirus in the UK?

Evidence-based explanations of the Covid-19 pandemic, including how it started, how it might end, and how to protect yourself and others.

Covid-19 has torn through Black America, with the virus taking the lives of Black people in the US at twice the rate of white Americans.

All of Americas minorities, with the exception of Asian Americans, have seen worse outcomes than white people during the coronavirus pandemic. But Black Americans have fared worst of all, with about 1 in every 1,000 Black Americans dying from Covid-19 since February. That is about 40,000 people who have lost their lives. For their share of the US population, Black people are dying in the pandemic at twice the rate of white Americans, of whom about 1 in every 2,150 people has died.

Indigenous Americans , Pacific Islander Americans , and Latino Americans are also dying at highly disproportionate rates compared to the white majority. Asian Americans have seen slightly fewer deaths per person than whites, with a 1 in 2,470 death rate.

In the first presidential debate, former Vice President Joe Biden cited the high Covid-19 death rate for Black Americans to argue his case that President Donald Trump has not been good for Black Americans.

You talk about helping African Americans 1 in 1,000 African Americans has been killed because of the coronavirus, the Democratic nominee said. And if he doesnt do something quickly, by the end of the year, 1 in 500 will have been killed. 1 in 500 African Americans.

Cause Of Death Is Not Straightforward

Federal Deputy Chief Medical Officer Nick Coatsworth acknowledged that determining cause of death is complex when questioned by reporters on Tuesday, saying:

I remember as a junior doctor trying to do death certificates its not always an easy thing I dont, by any stretch of the imagination, think its a reason to underplay the severe impact that COVID has on people who have conditions.

Indeed, distinguishing between dying with and dying from COVID-19 may require a more complex investigation into the cause of a death, beyond citing a positive SARS-CoV-2 test that was completed prior to the persons death.

For example, Victorias coroner is currently investigating the death of a man in his twenties, who was widely reported as being Australias youngest coronavirus death. The coroner is investigating whether his death was primarily caused by SARS-CoV-2, or whether the virus contributed less substantially to his death.

While this death was reported on August 14 in Victorias daily death toll, according to The Sydney Morning Herald, as of August 28 it wasnt counted in the federal COVID-19 death tally. It remains unclear whether the death has been added to the federal count as of today.

Generally when a person dies a medical practitioner is responsible for indicating the cause of death. The doctor will complete a medical certificate of cause of death, and inform the Registry of Births, Death and Marriages in their state or territory.

How Do Death Rates From Covid

To understand how the pandemic is evolving, its crucial to know how death rates from COVID-19 are affected by vaccination status. The death rate is a key metric that can accurately show us how effective vaccines are against severe forms of the disease. This may change over time when there are changes in the prevalence of COVID-19, and because of factors such as waning immunity, new strains of the virus, and the use of boosters.

On this page, we explain why it is essential to look at death rates by vaccination status rather than the absolute number of deaths among vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

We also visualize this mortality data for the United States, England, Switzerland, and Chile.

Ideally we would produce a global dataset that compiles this data for countries around the world, but we do not have the capacity to do this in our team. As a minimum, we list country-specific sources where you can find similar data for other countries, and we describe how an ideal dataset would be formatted.

The Ballooning Death Toll Has Defied The Hopes Of Many Americans That The Less Severe Omicron Variant Would Spare The United States The Pain Of Past Waves

Two years into the pandemic, the coronavirus is killing Americans at far higher rates than people in other wealthy nations, a sobering distinction to bear as the country charts a course through the next stages of the pandemic.

The ballooning death toll has defied the hopes of many Americans that the less severe omicron variant would spare the United States the pain of past waves. Deaths have now surpassed the worst days of the autumn surge of the delta variant, and are more than two-thirds as high as the record tolls of last winter, when vaccines were largely unavailable.

With American lawmakers desperate to turn the page on the pandemic, as some European leaders have already begun to, the number of dead has clouded a sense of optimism, even as omicron cases recede. And it has laid bare weaknesses in the countrys response, scientists said.

Death rates are so high in the States eye-wateringly high, said Devi Sridhar, head of the global public health program at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, who has supported loosening coronavirus rules in parts of Britain. The United States is lagging.

Some of the reasons for Americas difficulties are well known. Despite having one of the worlds most powerful arsenals of vaccines, the country has failed to vaccinate as many people as other large, wealthy nations. Crucially, vaccination rates in older people also lag behind certain European nations.

Vaccine Development: Vaccines Approved For Use And In Clinical Trials

The speed at which the first COVID-19 vaccines were developed was extraordinary. We have previously looked into the history of vaccine development. The measles vaccine was found relatively rapidly: it took only 10 years from the discovery of the pathogen to the development of the first vaccine. But for typhoid it took more than a century, and for some diseases for which weve known the pathogens for more than a century we still havent found an effective vaccine.

The development of a vaccine against COVID-19 has been much faster than the development of any other vaccine. Within less than a year several successful vaccines have already been announced and were approved for use in some countries.

The hope is that even more manufacturers develop vaccines for COVID-19. This will be important because eventually a very large share of the world population needs to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

We are on the way to several vaccines against COVID-19 vaccine trackers monitor the progress:

Several institutions maintain websites on which they list COVID-19 candidate vaccines that are currently being developed:

Fact Check: Have More Americans Died From Covid Under Joe Biden Than Donald Trump

The U.S. has hit another grim pandemic-related milestone, reaching 800,000 cumulative COVID-related deaths.

With cases rising again across the country as the Omicron variant of the coronavirus takes hold, politicians, journalists and social media users are taking stock of President Joe Biden‘s pandemic-handling abilities in his first year.

The Claim

This week, multiple public figures and social media users attempted to directly compare how current and previous administrations fared in the battle against COVID by analyzing the cumulative number of deaths from the virus under each president.

“Joe Biden based his entire 2020 presidential campaign on the promise he would solve covid by trusting “the science.” It was all bullshit. He’s presided over more deaths, hospitalizations & cases than Trump. Yet media crushed Trump for covid, gives Biden a pass,” political commentator Clay Travis tweeted.

Others simply posted death count figures that suggested more Americans fell victim to COVID under Biden than under Trump.

Some tied their claim to reports from Reuters and other outlets stating the total coronavirus deaths in the U.S. in 2021 have now topped those of 2020.

United States: Daily Confirmed Cases: How Do They Compare To Other Countries

Differences in the population size between different countries are often large. To compare countries, it is insightful to look at the number of confirmed cases per million people this is what the chart shows.

Keep in mind that in countries that do very little testing the actual number of cases can be much higher than the number of confirmed cases shown here.

Officials In Several States Including Kansas Georgia Alabama Oklahoma And Wisconsin Have Amended The Death Certificates Of People Who Died In January Of 2020 To Show Those Deaths Were Caused By Covid

The simple truth is that far, far too many people have died from Covid-19.

In the US, where vaccines have been widely available for months, its a shocking number of people but while the official total will soon reach 650,000, the sad fact is we dont know the exact number and probably wont for some time.

A number of recent revelations illustrate the difficulty in keeping track.

The administration of New Yorks former Gov. Andrew Cuomo did not publicize 12,000 Covid-19 deaths on the official state tally, although they were included in data maintained by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cuomos successor, Gov. Kathy Hochul, has added the deaths to New Yorks official total.

Officials in several states, including Kansas, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma and Wisconsin, have amended the death certificates of people who died in January of 2020 to show those deaths were caused by Covid-19, according to an investigation by the San Jose Mercury News. Thats important because the previously first-known US victims were in February and the change suggests the virus was moving throughout the country before previously known.

While the number of reported deaths is closer to reality than either the documented number of Covid-19 infections or Covid-19 hospitalizations, according to the CDC, the officially reported death totals do not capture the entire universe of Covid-19 deaths.

Adjusting for population, there have been a total of 237 COVID-19-related deaths for every 100,000 Americans nationwide. In Illinois, deaths attributable to the coronavirus per capita are about as common than they are nationwide. Across the state, 29,376 people have died from the coronavirus, equal to about 231 deaths for every 100,000 people. Of all states and Washington D.C. Illinois has the 22nd lowest death rate per capita.

Any number of factors contribute to variations in COVID-19 fatalities per capita across the United States. One of them is the per capita infection rate. Although the number of deaths attributable to the virus per capita is about as high in Illinois than it is nationwide, COVID-19 infections per capita are not.

Do People Die From Covid After Getting The Covid

New data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests 99.999% of people who were fully vaccinated against COVID-19 did not have a severe breakthrough case that led to hospitalization or death, CNN reports.

  • Per the CDC, more than 166 million people have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • The new data suggests 1,507 people of those fully vaccinated people died from COVID-19.
  • Meanwhile, 7,101 people of those fully vaccinated people were hospitalized from COVID-19.

United States: Biweekly Deaths: Where Are Confirmed Deaths Increasing Or Falling

Why is it useful to look at biweekly changes in deaths?

For all global data sources on the pandemic, daily data does not necessarily refer to deaths on that day but to the deaths reported on that day.

Since reporting can vary significantly from day to day irrespectively of any actual variation of deaths it is helpful to look at a longer time span that is less affected by the daily variation in reporting. This provides a clearer picture of where the pandemic is accelerating, staying the same, or reducing.

The first map here provides figures on the number of confirmed deaths in the last two weeks. To enable comparisons across countries it is expressed per million people of the population.

And the second map shows the growth rate over this period: blue are all those countries in which the death count in the last two weeks was lower than in the two weeks before. In red countries the death count has increased.

The following chart shows the share of the total population that has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. This represents the share that have received all doses prescribed by the vaccination protocol. If a person receives the first dose of a 2-dose vaccine, this metric stays the same. If they receive the second dose, the metric goes up by 1.

This data is only available for countries which report the breakdown of doses administered by first and second doses.

How Many People Died Of Covid In Bcp When Parties Took Place

How many people died in BCP when the Downing Street parties took place?

A shake-up has been promised in Downing Street after it emerged police are investigating at least 12 events across Government for Covid breaches including the Prime Ministers birthday party and a gathering in his Downing Street flat.

The Prime Minister apologised on Monday and insisted I get it and I will fix it as he faced fresh calls to resign after Sue Grays limited inquiry criticised failures of leadership and judgment.

But he repeatedly refused to rule out calls, including from senior Tory MPs, to publish the full unredacted report from the senior civil servant after she conceded she had to pare it back while the Metropolitan Police investigate.

We’ve taken a look at the number of people who died in the BCP area on the days the parties took place.

In total, 30 people died with Covid on these days.

The dozen events being looked at by officers include a gathering in the No 10 Downing Street flat on November 13 2020, the night Mr Johnsons former aides Dominic Cummings and Lee Cain left their roles.

The Gray report adds little in the way of new facts to the Partygate scandal, thanks to the Metropolitan Polices request to censor information relating to the 12 gatherings that it is now investigating.

Dying ‘with’ Or ‘from’ Covid

Officially, Ontario reports the number of people who die “with” a confirmed case of COVID-19. This particular wording has prompted some skeptics to cast doubt on the death toll numbers, claiming that people who did not actually die “from” COVID-19 are being counted.

These skeptics claim that people killed in car accidents or dying of other unrelated causes are being counted as COVID-19 deaths because they happened to have tested positive.

That’s a complete myth, Moriarty said. The Public Health Agency of Canada has directed provinces not to include deaths that are unrelated to the virus in their pandemic fatality counts.

If anything, the official number of COVID-19 deaths counted by Ontario and most other provinces is an underestimate, according to research led by Moriarty.

“We have missed a lot of COVID deaths, and we almost certainly are missing many now,” she said, as a result of Ontario’s recent restrictions on who can get an official PCR test for the virus.

“If you die with COVID, even if it looks like COVID, smells like COVID, everything … if they don’t have a positive test, they will not be reported as a COVID death,” Moriarty said. “We know this is a very significant problem.”

“In the first several weeks of January, we’re confident that a significant proportion of were from Delta,” Moore told a news conference on Thursday.
