How Many Americans Have Died From Covid

Thrombosis With Thrombocytopenia Syndrome

Trump says up to 100,000 Americans may die from coronavirus

Thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome is a rare event involving serious blood clots with a low blood platelet count. TTS is triggered by the immune systems response to the AstraZeneca vaccine and is different from other clotting conditions. The TGA and other medicines regulators around the world continue to monitor and investigate this issue.

Earlier this week, the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation released a joint statement with the Thrombosis and Haemostasis Society of Australia and New Zealand . This update notes that the risk of developing TTS after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine does not appear to be higher in people who have previously had a clot such as deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. The update also states that there appears to be no increased risk in those with a history of coronary heart disease, stroke or thrombocytopenia or those receiving anticoagulation therapy. ATAGI recommends that these people can receive the AstraZeneca vaccine.;

However, ATAGI recommends that the Comirnaty vaccine be used in people with:

  • a history of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis or idiopathic splanchnic venous thrombosis

  • a history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia

  • anti-phospholipid syndrome with thrombosis

  • a serious reaction to a previous dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine such as anaphylaxis or TTS.

Covid Deaths Rare Among Fully Vaccinated

Fully vaccinated people are much less likely to die with Covid-19 than those who arent, or have had only one dose, figures from the Office for National Statistics show.

Out of more than 51,000 Covid deaths in England between January and July 2021, only 256 occurred after two doses.

They were mostly people at very high risk from illness from Covid-19.

The figures show the high degree of protection from the vaccines against illness and death, the ONS said.

Some deaths after vaccination were always expected because vaccines are not 100% effective, and it takes a couple of weeks after your second dose to build the fullest protection.

Of the 51,281 deaths involving Covid registered in England between 2 January and 2 July 2021:

  • 640 were people who had received both vaccine doses
  • This total includes people who had been infected before they were vaccinated
  • Some 458 deaths were people who died at least 21 days after their second dose
  • Just 256 deaths were people who were both fully vaccinated and who had their first positive PCR test at least 14 days after their second dose

Breakthrough deaths occurring at least two weeks after the second jab along with a first positive PCR Covid test tend to happen in the most vulnerable, men and those with weakened immune systems, with the average age being 84.

But overall numbers were very small they accounted for only 0.5% of all deaths from Covid-19 over the first six months of the year.

Vaccine Development: Vaccines Approved For Use And In Clinical Trials

The speed at which the first COVID-19 vaccines were developed was extraordinary. We have previously looked into the history of vaccine development. The measles vaccine was found relatively rapidly: it took only 10 years from the discovery of the pathogen to the development of the first vaccine. But for typhoid it took more than a century, and for some diseases for which weve known the pathogens for more than a century we still havent found an effective vaccine.

The development of a vaccine against COVID-19 has been much faster than the development of any other vaccine. Within less than a year several successful vaccines have already been announced and were approved for use in some countries.;

The hope is that even more manufacturers develop vaccines for COVID-19. This will be important because eventually a very large share of the world population needs to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

We are on the way to several vaccines against COVID-19 vaccine trackers monitor the progress:

Several institutions maintain websites on which they list COVID-19 candidate vaccines that are currently being developed:

Oxford/AstraZeneca, Sinopharm/Beijing, Sinovac, Sputnik V

Existing Statewide Reports Potentially Misleading

Even the way the state releases aggregate death data can mask the extent of Floridas fatalities in real time.

The Department of Health now does so;by date of death, rather than when theyre reported. Because reports lag, fatalities are much lower;for more recent days.

For instance, the state on Aug. 26;reported only eight statewide deaths, yet a single;hospital system in Lee County reported 10 deaths that day.;

Looking at the deaths-by-date statistics Florida publishes weekly, Trepka, the epidemiologist, said, This is the perfect example of why it is misleading to chart fatalities by the dates they happened. If you look at , youd think deaths have gone down since.

State public health officials, in response to a recent Miami Herald news report on the issue, said the reporting policy that has been in place since March is in the interest of precision, accuracy, and transparency in public communications.;

DeSantis spokeswoman has also taken to Twitter to repeatedly bash the news report. On Thursday she wrote: It wasnt a scandal then; it isnt now. Media JUST started pretending it is, because Florida COVID numbers are declining now.;

And, indeed, there is some favorable COVID-19 news. The Florida Hospital Association, which started reporting daily COVID-19 hospitalizations after the state stopped doing so, is showing a downturn in what has been the worst rate of pandemic admissions since its start.

Deaths And Cases: Our Data Source

What you need to know about coronavirus on Thursday, May 28

Our World in Data relies on data from Johns Hopkins University

In this document, the many linked charts, our COVID-19 Data Explorer, and the Complete COVID-19 dataset we report and visualize the data on confirmed cases and deaths from Johns Hopkins University . We make the data used in our charts and tables downloadable as a complete and structured .csv, .xlsx and json file here on our GitHub site.

The Johns Hopkins University dashboard and dataset is maintained by a team at its Center for Systems Science and Engineering . It has been publishing updates on confirmed cases and deaths for all countries since January 22, 2020. A feature on the JHU dashboard and dataset was published in The Lancet in early May 2020.2 This has allowed millions of people across the world to track the course and evolution of the pandemic.

JHU updates its data multiple times each day. This data is sourced from governments, national and subnational agencies across the world a full list of data sources for each country is published on Johns Hopkinss GitHub site.It also makes its data publicly available there.

Note that on November 30, Our World in Data transitioned from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control to Johns Hopkins University as our source for confirmed cases and deaths. This followed the ECDCs announcement that they were switching from daily to weekly updates. More information on this change can be found here.

Weekly And Biweekly Deaths: Where Are Confirmed Deaths Increasing Or Falling

Why is it useful to look at weekly or biweekly changes in deaths?

For all global data sources on the pandemic, daily data does not necessarily refer to deaths on that day but to the deaths;reported;on that day.

Since reporting can vary significantly from day to day irrespectively of any actual variation of deaths it is helpful to look at changes from week to week. This provides a slightly clearer picture of where the pandemic is accelerating, slowing, or in fact reducing.

The maps shown here provide figures on weekly and biweekly deaths: one set shows the number of deaths per million people in the previous seven or fourteen days ; the other set shows the growth rate over these periods.

United States: Daily Confirmed Cases: How Do They Compare To Other Countries

Differences in the population size between different countries are often large. To compare countries, it is insightful to look at the number of confirmed cases per million people this is what the chart shows.

Keep in mind that in countries that do very little testing the actual number of cases can be much higher than the number of confirmed cases shown here.

What does the data on deaths and cases tell us about the mortality risk of COVID-19?

To understand the risks and respond appropriately we would also want to know the mortality risk of COVID-19 the likelihood that someone who is infected with the disease will die from it.

We look into this question in more detail on our page about the mortality risk of COVID-19, where we explain that this requires us to know or estimate the number of total cases and the final number of deaths for a given infected population. Because these are not known, we discuss what the current data can and can not tell us about the risk of death.

Some Counties Have Up

Nearly 500,000 Americans have died from the coronavirus | GMA

Some communities, such as the Southwest Florida counties of Lee and Collier, can rely on their big hospital systems to track and report this;information daily.

The publicly operated Lee Health hospital system, the largest hospital operator between Tampa and Miami, has been reporting COVID-19 cases and deaths routinely throughout the pandemic.

NCH Healthcare, which operates Collier County’s largest hospitals, recently started doing so as well. A representative for the two-hospital Physicians Regional Healthcare System in Naples referred a reporter to the Department of Health for that information.

The Lee and Collier branches of the department don’t release that information.;

Volusia and Flagler county health departments are two of the handful of counties that do.

Flagler County reported 164 deaths as of Wednesday. Twenty of those deaths came after;June 3, the last day the state released county-level death data. That’s nearly double the 11 deaths Flagler saw during the same period last year.

Volusia has had 1,058 COVID-19 deaths in total. Since June 3, it has had;212 deaths, up from 189 during the same period last year.

After repeated requests for the data, Volusia spokesperson;Ethan Johnson;told the USA TODAY Network – Florida on Wednesday that the department was releasing the data because this information was shared at the Volusia County School Board Meeting last night to inform local decision-making, so I now feel more comfortable sharing this data point.

Vaers Reports Are Unverified And Dont Show Causation

Unlike other official government sources, which flow through consistent reporting channels and get screened by statisticians and analysts before they are made available to the public, VAERS is an open-access system. The reports submitted are not verified before they become public.

Anybody can report to it, Offit said. If I get a vaccine, or I give my child a vaccine, and I believe that they have turned into the Incredible Hulk, then I can write up a one-page report online and submit it, and that then is included. And;thats been done.

A;disclaimer;on the VAERS website says the reports alone cannot be used to determine if a vaccine caused or contributed to an adverse event or illness, in part because they may include incomplete, inaccurate, coincidental and unverified information. People accessing the database;must click an option;that says that theyve read and understand the disclaimer.

Fact-check: Does 100% of the population have to be vaccinated for herd immunity?

Offit said VAERS works best as a hypothesis-generating mechanism that can tip scientists off to issues for further study, such as the rare cases of blood clots that prompted the agency to;recommend a temporary pause;on use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.;

In this case, the;CDC has analyzed;all the reports of death among COVID-19 vaccine recipients that were submitted to VAERS between Dec. 14, 2020, and May 3.;

Simply looking at the cumulative total or daily number of confirmed deaths does not allow us to understand or compare the speed at which these figures are rising.

The table here shows how long it has taken for the number of confirmed deaths to double in each country for which we have data. The table also shows both the cumulative total and daily new number of confirmed deaths, and how those numbers have changed over the last 14 days.

    A new study estimates that the number of people who have died of COVID-19 in the U.S. is more than 900,000, a number 57% higher than official figures.

    Worldwide, the study’s authors say, the COVID-19 death count is nearing 7 million, more than double the reported number of 3.24 million.

    The analysis comes from researchers at the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, who looked at excess mortality from March 2020 through May 3, 2021, compared it with what would be expected in a typical nonpandemic year, then adjusted those figures to account for a handful of other pandemic-related factors.

    The final count only estimates deaths “caused directly by the SARS-CoV-2 virus,” according to the study’s authors. SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that causes COVID-19.

    Researchers estimated dramatic undercounts in countries such as India, Mexico and Russia, where they said the official death counts are some 400,000 too low in each country. In some countries including Japan, Egypt and several Central Asian nations the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation’s death toll estimate is more than 10 times higher than reported totals.

    Fully Vaccinated People Account For 12% Of Englands Covid

    How Many Americans have DIED after taking COVID VACCINE ...

    ONS figures show 51,281 Covid deaths between January and July, with 458 dying at least 21 days after second dose

    People who were fully vaccinated accounted for just 1.2% of all deaths involving Covid-19 in England in the first seven months of this year.

    The figures, , have been seized on as proof of the success of the vaccine programme.

    The figures show a total of 51,281 deaths involving Covid-19 in England between 2 January and 2 July, of which 38,964 were of unvaccinated people.

    Of the total Covid-related deaths, 458 were of people who died at least 21 days after their second vaccine dose. Just 256 deaths were of people who were fully vaccinated and had their first positive PCR test at least 14 days after their second dose.

    No vaccine is 100% effective against Covid-19, and health authorities have made it clear that some deaths of vaccinated individuals are to be expected. Public Health England has estimated that two-dose effectiveness against hospital admission with infections from the Delta variant which is now the UKs dominant strain has been around 94%.

    However, the figures on Monday underlined that the risk of death involving Covid-19 is consistently lower for people who have received two doses compared with one dose or no vaccination at all.

    Tucker Carlson:;Between late December of 2020 and last month, a total of 3,362 people apparently died after getting the COVID vaccine in the United States The actual number is almost certainly higher.

    Developing A Data Access And Management System For Reporting Covid

    CDC developed a national COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough REDCap database where designated state health department investigators can enter, store, and manage data for cases in their jurisdiction. State health departments have full access to data for cases reported from their jurisdiction.

    State health departments voluntarily report vaccine breakthrough cases to CDC.; As of May 1, 2021, CDC transitioned from publicly reporting the passive surveillance of all vaccine breakthrough cases on the website to focus on hospitalized or fatal vaccine breakthrough cases due to any cause. This shift helped maximize the quality of the data collected on cases of greatest clinical and public health importance. Some health departments continue to report all vaccine breakthrough cases to the national database and continue to submit specimens to CDC for sequencing. ;Previous data on all vaccine breakthrough cases reported to CDC from JanuaryApril 2021 are available.
