How Many Covid Deaths In California

What Are The Current Trends In The Bay Area

CA reaches single-day record for COVID-19 deaths

Reported case rates have climbed higher than during the first winter surge at the end of 2020 and experts say the total number infected could be nearing or surpassing the total during the peak of the omicron-driven surge this past winter. The Bay Area has been reporting some of the highest case rates in the state and those numbers do not include the growing number of people testing positive with home tests. One study suggested that cases in New York City could be thirtyfold higher than the numbers being reported. The Bay Area has relatively high vaccination rates but boosters are being recommended as variants continue to emerge.

If Youre Fully Vaccinated

Individuals are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving either the second dose of a two-dose vaccine series like those by Pfizer or Moderna, or one dose of a single-dose vaccine. If you are fully vaccinated, your risk of infection is lower and your risk of severe disease is much lower than if you are unvaccinated.,The C.D.C. also recommends additional booster vaccine doses.

Avoid large indoor events with more than fifty people, especially if some participants may be unvaccinated. Consider choosing outdoor activities instead, such as outdoor dining, outdoor team sports or meeting friends outside.

Its better to socialize inside the home with only one or two other vaccinated households. Consider wearing a mask if there is a chance some attendees may be unvaccinated or if people in your own household are in a high-risk category.

You can lower your risk during grocery shopping or other public indoor activities by choosing places where people wear masks. If others are not wearing masks, consider choosing a close-fitting mask with good filtration, or wearing two close-fitting cloth masks.

Traveling domestically issafer after you are fully vaccinated. You may want to check the level of transmission at departure and arrival destinations before traveling. Keep in mind that receiving medical care, even for unrelated conditions, may become difficult if hospitals at your travel destination are overwhelmed with Covid-19 patients.

This Is How Many People Have Died From Covid

Adjusting for population, there have been a total of 218 COVID-19-related deaths for every 100,000 Americans nationwide. In California, deaths attributable to the coronavirus per capita are less common than they are nationwide. Across the state, 69,756 people have died from the coronavirus, equal to about 176 deaths for every 100,000 people. Of all states — and Washington D.C. — California has the 17th lowest death rate per capita.

Any number of factors contribute to variations in COVID-19 fatalities per capita across the United States. One of them is the per capita infection rate. Just as the number of deaths attributable to the virus per capita is lower in California than it is nationwide, COVID-19 infections per capita are too.

To date, there have been 4,770,213 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in California, equal to 12,059 infections per 100,000 people — compared to 13,544 infections per 100,000 people nationwide.

Though it is not always the case, states with higher than average COVID-19 deaths per capita are often also home to larger high-risk populations. One such group is retirement-age Americans, who are at least 90 times more likely to die from the virus if infected than those in the 18 to 29 age group. In California, 14.8% of the population are 65 and older. Nationwide, 16.5% of the population fall into that age group.

All COVID-19 data used in the story is current as of Oct. 14, 2021.

On June 15, 2021, we changed the historical hospitalizations data for Ontario, which also changed the Canadian total. Previously, ongoing hospitalizations excluded intensive care patients whose latest tests were negative. These patients are now counted in. However, unlike other provinces, Ontario still excludes from its total regular hospitalizations for patients who tested negative, although they remain hospitalized due to COVID-19.

On March 26, 2021, the definition of the number of confirmed variant cases changed in Quebec. Prior to this date, confirmed cases of variants had to go through two steps: screening and sequencing. The screening can detect genetic mutations, but does not identify which strain it is. It is during the second step, genetic sequencing, that the strain is identified. Variant cases are now considered to be confirmed upon screening. We are checking statistics for the other provinces and we will adjust the numbers as we go.

Between December 24, 2020 and January 3, 2021, some provinces temporarily stopped publishing daily data and instead did reviews at certain times. The statistics of certain days during this period can therefore count for several days. This is the case in Quebec.

On July 17, 2020, Quebec changed its way of estimating the number of recovered people. We used data from the INSPQ to correct our historical data to account for this change.

New Cases By Vaccination Status

New York curve flattens despite highest daily COVID

The data below on cases by vaccination status are estimates based on case data matched to COVID-19 vaccine data. Individuals are fully vaccinated after 14 days or more have passed from completing their COVID-19 vaccine series. A fully vaccinated case is when someone tests positive for COVID-19 and is fully vaccinated. An unvaccinated case is when someone tests positive and has not received any COVID-19 vaccine. Data are not shown for new cases among partially vaccinated residents.

  • No COVID-19 vaccine completely prevents all COVID-19 infections.
  • Fully vaccinated cases are expected. This does not mean the vaccines do not work.
  • The vaccine’s job is to promote a healthy immune response. If you are fully vaccinated and contract the virus, your symptoms will most likely be mild and similar to the common cold.
  • Vaccinated people are still highly unlikely to be hospitalized due to COVID-19.

The 7-day rolling average case rate shows the trend in new cases per 100,000 residents by vaccination status. We calculate the rolling average case rate by averaging the new case rate for a particular day with the prior 6 days.

Data for the most recent 8 days may be incomplete and are not shown.

Inclusion on this list does not suggest neglect or wrongdoing on the part of the setting.

Coronavirus Disease : How Is It Transmitted

We know that the disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which spreads between people in several different ways.

The virus can spread from an infected persons mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols.

  • Current evidence suggests that the virus spreads mainly between people who are in close contact with each other, typically within 1 metre . A person can be infected when aerosols or droplets containing the virus are inhaled or come directly into contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • The virus can also spread in poorly ventilated and/or crowded indoor settings, where people tend to spend longer periods of time. This is because aerosols remain suspended in the air or travel farther than 1 metre .

People may also become infected by touching surfaces that have been contaminated by the virus when touching their eyes, nose or mouth without cleaning their hands.

Further research is ongoing to better understand the spread of the virus and which settings are most risky and why. Research is also under way to study virus variants that are emerging and why some are more transmissible. Covid Death Projection: This Is How Many May Die Each Day In California

LOS ANGELES When Gov. Gavin Newsom provided a dire view of Californias out-of-control surge of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations this week, he referred to projection models of future death and misery that he said were becoming alarmingly more accurate.

If true, then over the next four weeks the states hospitals could be overflowing with 75,000 patients about five times the current level and an average of 400 people will die every day.

Hospitals were on the brink of being overrun with nearly 15,000 patients with COVID-19 when Newsom made the announcement Tuesday. The hospitalization projection is based on cases continuing to increase at the current rate of infection without people taking additional precautions to prevent spreading the virus.

At that trajectory, it doesnt take long before the state is in a very bad place, said Marm Kilpatrick, an infectious disease expert at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

One thing thats worrisome is that for quite a while in California weve had exponential hospitalizations and cases, Kilpatrick said. Thats kind of terrifying.

The models posted online by the California Department of Public Health largely show one key indicator the transmission rate improving in recent days. But that number still remains at a point where each person with the virus infects more than one other person, leading to out-of-control spread.

United States: Daily Confirmed Cases: How Do They Compare To Other Countries

Differences in the population size between different countries are often large. To compare countries, it is insightful to look at the number of confirmed cases per million people this is what the chart shows.

Keep in mind that in countries that do very little testing the actual number of cases can be much higher than the number of confirmed cases shown here.

What Information Do States Report

US COVID-19 deaths in California now top 30,000

States tell the CDC about how many cases of COVID-19 they have in the state, as well as how many people have died from COVID-19. States report the total number of cases since they started keeping track back in January and the number of new cases and deaths reported within the last seven days.

Information about COVID-19 testing, hospitalizations, and the number of people who have recovered are also reported. In some cases, the data is presented as a percentage. In other cases, you might see the data displayed as the rate per 1,000 people within a given timeframe.

Since each state is not the same size, looking at the number of cases or deaths relative to how many people live in the state tells you more about the spread of the virus than simply looking at the raw data. A high number of cases in a state with a small population would mean something different than that same number of cases in a state that is three times as big.

States also report some information that is not accessible to the public the restricted data contains more specific fields that could potentially compromise patient privacy. This data is more meant for public health officials and researchers.

Some states provide data about how communities have been affected by COVID-19. For example, the CDC displays data that shows how often people are going out in certain parts of the country and relates this data on mobility to the level of virus transmission in those areas.
