More Than 1000 Covid Deaths In Australia Since January 1

In the first 26 days of 2022, 1,073 deaths from COVID-19 have been reported across Australia. The macabre four-digit milestone was reached with the announcement today of 87 fatalities in the past 24 hours.

At an average of more than 40 deaths each day since the beginning of the year, COVID-19 is now killing Australians more than ten times as quickly as it did between March 2020 and December 2021, and five times as fast as at the height of the Delta outbreak, between July and November last year.

Victoria reported 35 COVID-19 deaths today, while New South Wales recorded 29, South Australia 13, Queensland 9 and Tasmania 1. Throughout the country, 5,240 people are hospitalised for the virus, with 373 in intensive care and 135 on ventilators.

In NSW, the only state which reports this information daily, two of the deaths reported today were people in their 50s, three in their 60s, two in their 70s, 16 in their 80s, and six in their 90s. Seven were unvaccinated, while 16 had received two doses and six had received three doses.

As of January 23, 71.8 percent of NSW patients hospitalised for COVID-19 had received at least two vaccine doses, up 1.6 points from the previous week. With only 79.8 percent of the states population double-vaccinated, the convergence of these figures makes clear that vaccination, as critical as it is, cannot prevent mass illness and death alone.

Canada Asks Biden For Help Getting More Pfizer

    The Associated Press

TORONTO Canada wont be getting any Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccines next week and 50 percent fewer than expected over the next month, officials said Tuesday, prompting the leader of Canadas most populous province to ask President-elect Joe Biden to share a million doses from Pfizers Michigan plant.

Maj. Gen. Dany Fortin, who is leading Canadas logistical rollout and distribution of vaccines, called it a major reduction, but said Pfizer is still expected to meet its contractual obligation to ship four million doses to Canada by the end of March.

U.S. pharmaceutical company Pfizer confirmed last week it would temporarily reduce deliveries to Europe and Canada of its COVID-19 vaccine while it upgrades production capacity at its plant in Puurs, Belgium. Pfizers Belgian plant supplies all shots delivered outside the U.S.

Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, Canadas most populous province, said hes angry. He asked Biden to help Canada out, noting theres a Pfizer plant in Michigan.

Our American friends, help us out, Ford said. You have a new president, no more excuses. Help us out.

The U.S. reported 4,131 coronavirus-related deaths Wednesday, setting a record for the most Covid-19 deaths recorded in a single day, according to an NBC News tally.

The number of deaths Wednesday surpassed the previous record set Jan. 7, when 4,110 people in the U.S. were reported to have died from the coronavirus.

The U.S. also recorded 178,935 new cases Wednesday.

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Wednesday that the eviction moratorium will be extended until at least March 31.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has presented a historic threat to our nation’s health,” CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky said in a statement. “It has also triggered a housing affordability crisis that disproportionately affects some communities.

“Despite extensive mitigation efforts, COVID-19 continues to spread in America at a concerning pace,” she continued. “We must act to get cases down and keep people in their homes and out of congregate settings like shelters where COVID-19 can take an even stronger foothold.”

Dr Fauci Says Us Will Fight Covid By Remaining In Who

GENEVA President Joe Bidens top medical adviser on Covid-19, Dr. Anthony Fauci, says the United States will cease reducing U.S. staff counts at the World Health Organization and pay its financial obligations to it as it vows to stay fully engaged with the U.N. health agency to help fight the coronavirus pandemic.

I am honored to announce that the United States will remain a member of the World Health Organization, Fauci told the WHOs executive board meeting in Geneva via videoconference. The administration announced just hours after Bidens inauguration that the United States would revoke a planned pullout from the WHO in July that had been announced by the Trump administration.

Faucis quick commitment to WHOwhose response to the coronavirus outbreak was repeatedly berated by the Trump administration marks a dramatic and vocal shift toward a multilateral approach to fighting the pandemic.

He said the administration will will cease the drawdown of U.S. staff seconded to the WHO and resume regular engagement with WHO. He added: The United States also intends to fulfill its financial obligations to the organization.

Coronavirus Disease : How Is It Transmitted

We know that the disease is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which spreads between people in several different ways.

The virus can spread from an infected persons mouth or nose in small liquid particles when they cough, sneeze, speak, sing or breathe. These particles range from larger respiratory droplets to smaller aerosols.

              • Current evidence suggests that the virus spreads mainly between people who are in close contact with each other, typically within 1 metre . A person can be infected when aerosols or droplets containing the virus are inhaled or come directly into contact with the eyes, nose, or mouth.
              • The virus can also spread in poorly ventilated and/or crowded indoor settings, where people tend to spend longer periods of time. This is because aerosols remain suspended in the air or travel farther than 1 metre .

People may also become infected by touching surfaces that have been contaminated by the virus when touching their eyes, nose or mouth without cleaning their hands.

Further research is ongoing to better understand the spread of the virus and which settings are most risky and why. Research is also under way to study virus variants that are emerging and why some are more transmissible. Efficacy Of Available COVID-19 Vaccines In Prevention Against SARS-CoV-2 Variants Of Concern

The four novel vaccines, BNT162b2 vaccine, mRNA-1273 vaccine, Ad26.COV2.S vaccine and ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 were developed to target the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein main site where these variants have developed mutations, raising concerns regarding the efficacy of these vaccines against the new variants.

              • mRNA-1273 vaccine: Results from a matched test negative case control study at a large health organization reported that two doses of mRNA-1273 vaccine were highly effective against all SARS-CoV-2 variants especially against hospitalizations with COVID-19.The study also reported progressive waning of vaccine effectiveness against the Delta variant with increasing time since vaccination. The efficacy of the mRNA-1273 vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant is unknown at this time.
              • Ad26.COV2.S vaccine: A single dose of this vaccine offers protection against COVID-19 consistently across many countries, including Brazil with a predominant percentage of strains from the P.2 lineage and across South Africa with a predominant percentage of strains from the B.1.135 lineage . It is important to note that the vaccine’s efficacy in the US was higher by a factor of 1.3 compared to South Africa . The efficacy of the Ad26.COV2.S vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant is unknown at this time.

Nigeria: Biweekly Cases: Where Are Confirmed Cases Increasing Or Falling

September On Track To Be Deadliest Month For Covid Since Winter Surge
Why is it useful to look at biweekly changes in confirmed cases?

For all global data sources on the pandemic, daily data does not necessarily refer to the number of new confirmed cases on that day but to the cases reported on that day.

Since reporting can vary significantly from day to day irrespectively of any actual variation of cases it is helpful to look at a longer time span that is less affected by the daily variation in reporting. This provides a clearer picture of where the pandemic is accelerating, staying the same, or reducing.

The first map here provides figures on the number of confirmed cases in the last two weeks. To enable comparisons across countries it is expressed per million people of the population.

And the second map shows the percentage change over this period: blue are all those countries in which the case count in the last two weeks was lower than in the two weeks before. In red countries the case count has increased.

This chart shows the number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths per day.

Eu Targets Vaccinating At Least 70% Of The Adult Population By The Summer

              From CNN’s Sharon Braithwaite

As new variants spread, the need to speed up the administration of vaccines is becoming all the more “acute,” the EU Commission has said.

The EU Commission on Tuesday called on member states to accelerate vaccine roll-out and ramp up testing across the bloc, setting out targets for stepping up the fight against the virus:

              • By March 2021, member states should have vaccinated a minimum of 80% of health and social care professionals and people over 80 years old.
              • By summer 2021, member states should have vaccinated a minimum of 70% of the adult population.

According to the Commission, meeting these two targets “would reduce death and hospitalisation rates, relieve pressure on healthcare systems and then put Europe on track for herd immunity.”

A successful deployment of vaccines will also help put Europes economy on a solid recovery path, it said.

New Data Suggests Substantial Increase In Severity Among Covid Patients In Los Angeles

              From CNNs Cheri Mossburg

The death rate among hospitalized Covid-19 patients in Los Angeles has nearly doubled in recent months, as health officials are seeing a substantial increase in severity among those sickened with the disease, according to new information presented by the countys Department of Health Services .

Since November, hospitalized patients in the county have had about a 23% chance of dying from the disease, health officials said Wednesday, a significant increase from the prior three months.

From September to November, Covid-19 patients had an approximately 12% chance of dying, according to LADHS.

There are currently more than 7,200 Covid-19 patients receiving treatment in Los Angeles County hospitals, lifting the patient census about three times higher than in previous surges. About 23% of those patients are in intensive care units, LA County health director Dr. Barbara Ferrer said in a Wednesday briefing, and about 21% are on ventilators.

The length of hospital stays for Covid-19 patients has also increased in LA County, jumping from an average of just under seven days between September and November to about 9.5 days from November to January.

These changes despite improvements in treatments suggest a substantial increase in the severity of illness among hospitalized patients, LADHS said in an update on Covid-19 modeling projections.

Chile Authorizes Emergency Use Of Sinovac Covid

From CNNs Christoper Ulloa in Santiago, Chile

A panel of experts from Chiles Institute of Public Health voted to authorize the emergency use of Covid-19 vaccine made by Chinese company Sinovac on Wednesday, for people between the ages of 18 and 59. The vote was 10 in favor, 2 against, and one abstention.

Heriberto Garcia, the director of the Institute, said the vaccine was “safe and effective. It prevents hospitalizations and fights the severity of the disease. He also noted the vaccine has already been authorized in China, Indonesia, Turkey, and Brazil.

Late-stage trials of the Sinovac vaccine in Brazil showed just 50.38% efficacy, significantly lower than earlier results had shown — raising questions as to the reliability of the data.

Sinovac is expected to send safety reports and conduct quality control checks on batches of vaccines, the Chilean health panel said.

Chile is already using the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. It has been administered to 10,000 health officials and the elderly.

On Wednesday, Chile reported 3,583 new cases of coronavirus and 21 deaths. The country now has 680,740 total Covid-19 cases and 17,594 deaths.

Despite The Vaccine Why Are There More Deaths This Year

Spencer Fox, associate director of the University of Texas COVID-19 Modeling Consortium, said the first thing to consider when it comes to looking at 2020 and 2021 pandemic statistics is that 2020 is a ten-month period while 2021 is a full pandemic year. Much of the COVID-19 deaths happened March 2020 and onward only 26 deaths involving COVID-19 were recorded for January and February 2020.

Additionally, the U.S. experienced a surge in cases starting winter 2020 near the end of that year, Fox said. Many people died from those 2020 infections in early 2021, and that was well before vaccines were widely available. So while many of the infections in that wave happened in 2020, they were part of the 2021 mortality statistics.

There was also a delta variant surge in summer 2021, after vaccines had become widely available to the public.

“What we’ve seen basically since that surge is really just continued spread,” Fox said, noting that the delta and omicron variants surprised a lot of people.

The delta variant was more infectious and had increased transmissibility, according to the CDC.

“But I think even though vaccines were widely available, I think a lot of the mortality that happened over the summer during that major Delta surge was happening on unvaccinated individuals,” Fox said.

Fox noted that even though many people were vaccinated, vaccination rates were low. “There was plenty kind of fuel for the COVID virus to spread on,” Fox said.
