Most Canadians Support Strong Border Measures Amid Concern Over Omicron Variant: Poll
From The Canadian Press:
The arrival of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has Canadians bracing for the worst, a new poll suggests.
More than four in five respondents to an online survey by Léger and the Association for Canadian Studies said they support closing the Canadian border to travellers coming from specific countries where the variant is already present.
In response to the detection of Omicron, Canada quickly put in place travel measures, including banning visitors who have recently travelled through 10 African countries, to curb the spread.
The poll of 1,547 Canadians was conducted Dec. 3-5. It cannot be assigned a margin of error because internet-based polls are not considered truly random samples.
Based on respondents feedback on the potential impact of Omicron, Léger executive vice-president Christian Bourque said people are expecting the new variant to be as bad if not worse than the Delta variant.
Forty-four per cent of respondents said Omicron would have a worse impact on case counts than Delta while 43 per cent said the impact would be the same.
Expectations arent overly optimistic, said Bourque.
Sixty-eight per cent said they would approve of reintroducing restrictions like social distancing and temporary lockdowns in Canada for certain public places and certain activities.
Bourque said the approval rate for restrictions has waned somewhat compared to previous polls, in which more than 80 per cent were in favour of these safety measures.
Summary Of Reported Deaths
Up to and including 11 September 2021, a total of 60 deaths were reported to CARM after the administration of the Comirnaty vaccine. Following medical assessments by CARM and Medsafe it has been determined that:
- 27 of these deaths are unlikely related to the COVID-19 vaccine
- 10 deaths could not be assessed due to insufficient information
- 22 cases are still under investigation.
- 1 death was likely due to vaccine induced myocarditis
By chance, some people will experience new illnesses or die from a pre-existing condition shortly after vaccination, especially if they are elderly. Therefore, part of our review process includes comparing natural death ratesto observed death rates following vaccination, to determine if there are any specific trends or patterns that might indicate a vaccine safety concern. See below for more information about these observed-versus-expected analyses.
To date, the observed number of deaths reported after vaccination is actually less than the expected number of natural deaths.

Six Omicron Cases Reported In Nebraska Marking Sixth Us State
Six cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 have been found in Nebraska, the states health department said, marking the sixth US state with confirmed cases.
One case involved a traveller who returned from Nigeria on November 23, while the other five cases were likely exposed through household contact with that individual, the department said.
Only one of the six individuals was vaccinated and none have needed to be hospitalized, it said.

Zimbabwe Says Identified 50 Cases Of Omicron
Zimbabwe has identified 50 cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant, Deputy Health Minister John Mangwiro said, as the government announced it would start offering booster shots to frontline workers, the elderly and people with chronic illnesses.
Most of the Omicron cases were detected at a teacher training college as well as the countrys under-17 football team that was due to participate at a regional tournament, Mangwiro told reporters.
From the outbreak that we detected from Masvingo Teachers College and the Under 17 soccer team, we took 20 samples from the college and 22 samples from the soccer team, they all tested positive for the Omicron variant, he said, adding that the other 8 cases were found in random samples.

Uk Officials Say Investigating Possible Increase In Omicron Cases This Week
Health officials in Britain said they were investigating a rise this week in the number of COVID-19 tests results that have a trait that is associated with the newly identified Omicron coronavirus variant of concern.
One of Omicrons mutations produces S-gene target failure in about half the PCR tests in use in Britain, allowing it to be distinguished from Delta and providing a clue over the spread of Omicron before full genomic sequencing.
Although a useful early indicator of the spread of Omicron, SGTF is associated with other variants too, such as Alpha.
The proportion of test results displaying SGTF has been very low in recent months but an increase has been observed in the past week, UK Health Security Agency said.
This is still a very small number of cases but is being investigated carefully to understand whether it is related to travel, any other variant or whether there is evidence of spread of Omicron beginning in the community.

Panama Blocks Travellers From Eight African Countries Due To Omicron Variant
Panama has announced that it would temporarily ban the entry of travellers from eight African countries due to concerns over the spread of the Omicron coronavirus strain.
The restriction applies to travellers who have been to South Africa, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe or Malawi within a two-week period, Panamas government said in a statement.
Panamanians and residents of the country who are vaccinated must present a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arriving in the country, while those who are not inoculated must place themselves in preventative quarantine, the government said.

Building An Accurate Model
In March 2021, when weekly data on state COVID-19 vaccinations started to become reliably available from state agencies, my team began to analyze the association between state vaccination rates and the subsequent COVID-19 cases and deaths in each state. Our goal was to build a model that was accurate enough to measure the effect of vaccination within the complicated web of factors that influence COVID19 deaths.
To do this, our model compares COVID-19 incidence in states with high vaccination rates against states with low vaccination rates. As part of the analysis, we controlled for things that influence the spread of the coronavirus, like statebystate differences in weather and population density, seasonally driven changes in social behavior and non-pharmaceutical interventions like stay-at-home orders, mask mandates and overnight business closures. We also accounted for the fact that there is a delay between when a person is first vaccinated and when their immune system has built up protection.

Stunning Lack Of Reaction To Mounting Death Toll
Perhaps most stunning of all is that these thousands of deaths and serious reactions are receiving no attention whatsoever. In 1976, the U.S. government vaccinated an estimated 45 million people against pandemic swine flu.
The program was canceled, Carlson reports, after only 53 people died. Authorities decided the vaccine was too risky to continue the campaign. Now, health authorities are shrugging off more than 3,500 deaths after COVID-19 vaccination as either coincidental or inconsequential.
Folks, this is 70 times more deaths than the swine flu vaccine, which was halted. If this isnt insanity on steroids, please tell me what is. Maybe murder? This doesnt even include the deaths of thousands, and potentially tens of thousands of miscarriages, which is now becoming rapidly recognized as a possible complication of COVID-19 vaccines.
In fact, an April 2021 report in The New England Journal of Medicine6 said that miscarriage was the most common condition reported after a COVID vaccine, and that there is probably substantial underreporting of pregnancy- and neonatal-specific adverse events connected with the vaccine. But rather than posting a warning that the vaccine may be causing miscarriages, health officials simply urged continued monitoring of the issue.
Mexican Presidents Rally Criticised Amid Threat Of Omicron Variant
This is how Mexico prepares for Omicron. At the invitation of the President himself, he claims 250k attendees, closer to 50k, prob. doesn’t matter. Into a 4th wave, hardly any testing, no CT, 51% double-vaxxed and no mandatory masking pretty bad, wouldn’t you say, ?

The Most Widely Believed False Statement Was That ‘the Government Is Exaggerating’ The Number Of Covid
Perhaps the most pernicious pieces of misinformation have to do with the perceived severity of COVID-19 itself. The most widely believed false statement was: “The government is exaggerating the number of COVID-19 deaths.”
Hamel says that underestimating the severity of COVID-19 appears to be a major reason why Republicans in particular have fallen behind in vaccination: “We’ve seen lower levels of personal worry among Republicans who remain unvaccinated,” she says. “That’s a real contrast with what we saw in communities of color, where there was a high level of worry about getting sick.”
Omicron Symptoms Mild Says South African Doctor
In an interview with Al Jazeera, South African doctor Angelique Coetzee, a private practitioner and chair of the South African Medical Association, who was one of the first to suspect a different coronavirus strain among patients, said what doctors are seeing at a primary healthcare level Omicron doesnt seem to be more deadly.
It seems very fast-spreading, and the symptoms that we are seeing are mild, she said.
But we still need to be worried because we never know which patient will get severe disease or not. That data will only be available going forward, Coetzee said.

Pfizers Vaccine Provides Some Protection Against Omicron A Lab Study Suggests
A report out of South Africa offered a first glimpse at how vaccinated people might fare against the fast-spreading Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
Laboratory experiments found that Omicron seems to dull the power of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, but also hinted that people who have received a booster shot might be better protected.
The study, published online on Tuesday, found that antibodies produced by vaccinated people were much less successful at keeping the Omicron variant from infecting cells than other forms of the coronavirus.
Scientists said the results were somewhat worrisome, but no cause for panic. The data suggests that vaccinated people might be vulnerable to breakthrough infections with Omicron, which is spreading rapidly in South Africa and has appeared in dozens of countries around the world.
But vaccines stimulate a wide-ranging immune response that involves more than just antibodies. So these experiments offer an incomplete picture of how well the vaccine protects against hospitalization or death from Omicron.
While I think theres going to be a lot of infection, Im not sure this is going to translate into systems collapsing, Alex Sigal, a virologist at the Africa Health Research Institute in Durban, South Africa, who led the research, said in an interview. My guess is that itll be under control.
Fortunately, that proved not to be the case.
Dr. Sigal announced the results on Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

What Is A Yellow Card
The Yellow Card scheme is a mechanism by which anybody can voluntarily report any suspected adverse reactions or side effects to the vaccine. It is very important to note that a Yellow Card report does not necessarily mean the vaccine caused that reaction or event. We ask for any suspicions to be reported, even if the reporter isnt sure if it was caused by the vaccine. Reports to the scheme are known as suspected adverse reactions .
Many suspected ADRs reported on a Yellow Card do not have any relation to the vaccine or medicine and it is often coincidental that they both occurred around the same time. The reports are continually reviewed to detect possible new side effects that may require regulatory action, and to differentiate these from things that would have happened regardless of the vaccine or medicine being administered, for instance due to underlying or undiagnosed illness.
It is therefore important that the suspected ADRs described in this report are not interpreted as being proven side effects of COVID-19 vaccines. A list of the possible side effects of COVID-19 Pfizer/BioNTech, COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca vaccine and COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna are provided in the product information document for healthcare professionals and the UK recipient information. These can also be found on the Coronavirus Yellow Card reporting site.

Neither brother was vaccinated, and neither one was particularly worried about Phil’s positive result. His brother said he was trying several alternative therapies commonly promoted in conservative circles. “He said, ‘I’ve got the ivermectin, I started it this morning, and I don’t think it’s going to be a big deal,’ ” Mark Valentine recalls. “And frankly I didn’t think about it anymore.”
Phil Valentine died in August about five weeks after he announced he had tested positive for COVID-19.

Belgium Tightens Curbs But Avoids Lockdown As Covid Cases Peak
Belgium tightened its coronavirus restrictions for the third consecutive week to fight one of Europes worst spikes of COVID-19 cases, but stopped short of the strict curbs imposed in the neighbouring Netherlands or Austria.
We cannot allow the train of infection that is thundering through our country to continue at its current pace, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo told a news conference.
With cases among children rising the most, De Croo said mask mandates will apply from age six. The current requirement to wear a mask is for those aged 10 years and older.
Primary schools will shut for Christmas and New Year holidays a week earlier and secondary schools will shift to a hybrid system, with half of classes from home.

Quebec Was Warned Early That Catastrophe Was Looming In Chslds Emails Show
The Legault government was warned as early as mid-March 2020, even before the disaster at the Résidence Herron came to light, that a catastrophe was looming in its CHSLDs.
Despite the governments position that it did the best it could with the information in hand, the directors of various establishments sounded the alarm on everything from personal protective equipment shortages to labour issues, but the message never got to the top, internal emails released as part of the coroners inquest into the CHSLD deaths reveal.

Omicron Is In 38 Countries No Deaths Reported Says Who
Omicron has been detected in 38 countries but there are no reported deaths so far from the new COVID-19 variant, the World Health Organisation said.
A WHO spokesman told reporters that the UN health agency had not seen reports of Omicron-related deaths yet.
And Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHOs technical lead on COVID-19, said Omicron had been reported in 38 countries, with the variant now spread across all six WHO regions.
The WHO has said it will take several weeks to determine how infectious Omicron is, and to assess how vaccines, tests and treatments hold up against it.

Daily And Cumulative Number Of Reported Covid
This graph shows the total number of new COVID-19 cases in Australia reported each day by states and territories and the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases reported over time. These figures are collated and updated by 9 pm AEST each day and reflect the previous 24 hours.
This bar chart shows the newly confirmed COVID-19 cases by notification received date.
The line graph shows the cumulative number of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases by notification received date.
The horizontal axis shows the date of notification to state and territory health departments.
The vertical axis on the left shows the number of new COVID-19 cases, represented by the bars.
The vertical axis on the right shows the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases, represented by the line.
As per the COVID-19 national guidelines, a COVID-19 confirmed case is a person who:
- tests positive to a validated specific SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid test or
- has the virus isolated in cell culture, with PCR confirmation using a validated method or
- undergoes a seroconversion to or has a significant rise in SARS-CoV-2 neutralising or IgG antibody level .
The first cases of COVID-19 in Australia were identified in late January 2020. Following a peak of cases at the end of March, low numbers of cases were reported each day until early-June 2020. From mid-June 2020, cases increased and peaked in early August 2020 and then declined. Since late-September 2020, a low number of new cases continue to be reported each day.
