Statistics Of The Covid

Parts of this article need to be . Please help update this article to reflect recent events or newly available information.

The CDC publishes official numbers of COVID-19 cases in the United States. The CDC estimates that, between February 2020 and September 2021, only 1 in 1.3 COVID-19 deaths were attributed to COVID-19. The true COVID-19 death toll in the United States would therefore be higher than official reports, as modeled by a paper published in The Lancet Regional Health Americas. One way to estimate COVID-19 deaths that includes unconfirmed cases is to use the excess mortality, which is the overall number of deaths that exceed what would normally be expected. From March 1, 2020 through the end of 2020, there were 522,368 excess deaths in the United States, or 22.9% more deaths than would have been expected in that time period.

In February 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, a shortage of tests made it impossible to confirm all possible COVID-19 cases and resulting deaths, so the early numbers were likely undercounts.

The following numbers are based on CDC data, which is incomplete.

What Share Of The Population Has Been Partly Or Fully Vaccinated Against Covid

The following charts show the breakdown of vaccinations by those that have been partly or fully vaccinated. A person is considered partly vaccinated if they have received only one dose of a 2-dose vaccine protocol. A person is considered fully vaccinated if they have received a single-dose vaccine or both doses of a two-dose vaccine.

This data is only available for countries which report the breakdown of doses administered by first and second doses.

Note About Indigenous Pacific Islander Multiracial & Other Race Americans

What do new weekly Covid

COVID-19 mortality data for Americans who are Indigenous, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islanders, Some Other race, or Multiracial is inconsistently reported by many states. Users may request our complete data file to better understand the loss of life in these groups as well. Users are cautioned that Indigenous and Pacific Islander people appear in the Other group in many states, along with Multiracial Americans and in a few cases, Asian Americans. We continue to advocate for complete, consistent reporting for all racial and ethnic groups.

Vaccine Effectiveness Against Hospitalization

Source: C.D.C.

For some people, even three vaccine doses appear to become less protective over time against Omicron-related hospital admissions. A study found that trend held for people with weakened immune systems, a category that older Americans were likelier to fall into. Sara Tartof, the studys lead author and an epidemiologist at Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, said that roughly 9 percent of people 65 and older in the study were immunocompromised, compared with 2.5 percent of adults under 50.

During the Omicron wave, Covid death rates were once again dramatically higher for older Americans than younger ones, Dr. Stokes said. Older people also made up an overwhelming share of the excess deaths the difference between the number of people who actually died and the number who would have been expected to die if the pandemic had never happened.

Dr. Jeremy Faust, an emergency physician at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston, found in a recent study that excess deaths were more heavily concentrated in people 65 and older during the Omicron wave than the Delta surge. Overall, the study found, there were more excess deaths in Massachusetts during the first eight weeks of Omicron than during the 23-week period when Delta dominated.

United States: Biweekly Cases: Where Are Confirmed Cases Increasing Or Falling

Why is it useful to look at biweekly changes in confirmed cases?

For all global data sources on the pandemic, daily data does not necessarily refer to the number of new confirmed cases on that day but to the cases reported on that day.

Since reporting can vary significantly from day to day irrespectively of any actual variation of cases it is helpful to look at a longer time span that is less affected by the daily variation in reporting. This provides a clearer picture of where the pandemic is accelerating, staying the same, or reducing.

The first map here provides figures on the number of confirmed cases in the last two weeks. To enable comparisons across countries it is expressed per million people of the population.

And the second map shows the growth rate over this period: blue are all those countries in which the case count in the last two weeks was lower than in the two weeks before. In red countries the case count has increased.

This chart shows the number of confirmed COVID-19 deaths per day.

Three points on confirmed death figures to keep in mind

Problems Cdc Is Solving Now

Remembering Americans who died due to COVID-19 | US Coronavirus | US News

There are several examples of how modernization and innovation during the pandemic have allowed CDC to use data to solve problems in ways we could not before. Many of these innovations will serve CDC well into the future as we face both known and unforeseen public health challenges. Because of improvements made, CDC can now:

  • The CDC COVID Data Tracker was developed in April 2020 to integrate data from multiple core surveillance systems with the goal of creating a one-stop shop for COVID data that is viewable and available to everyone. The COVID Data Tracker averages about 3-4 million views a week.
  • Respond more flexibly in any crisis: Moving public health into the cloud not only makes data more accessible but allows us to scale up rapidly for emergencies without changing systems.
  • Open up more data to the public: Using new privacy technologies has allowed CDC to release COVID-19 public use data sets that increase transparency and let the world help us figure out the big problems facing public health.
  • Apply new tools for public health: CDC is standing up a new center to advance the use of forecasting and outbreak analytics in public health decision-making, with the goal of supporting more efficient and effective outbreak responses.

How Many People Has Covid

Posted on by Evan Arnet

In late August, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated their provisional death counts pageto indicate that COVID-19 was the sole cause of death listed on death certificates in only 6% of cases.

This fact was interpreted by some as only 6% of reported fatalities, or around 10,000 people, actually died of COVID-19. This misleading claim became social media fodder for groups contending that the pandemic has been blown out of proportion.

Unfortunately, the CDC meant nothing of the sort. The CDC states, COVID-19 should not be reported on the death certificate if it did not cause or contribute to the death. Assuming accuracy of reporting, this statement means that COVID-19 at least contributed to100% of the deaths listed on the Provisional Death Counts page. You can read the CDCs detailed guidance here.

Moreover, COVID-19 is listed as the underlying cause, or disease or injury which set in motion the events leading to death, on more than 90% of death certificates.

Consider, for example, a death certificate that lists COVID-19, pneumonia, and respiratory failure as causes of death. In order to provide a complete picture of the death, the certifier listed additional causes. However, this patient had pneumonia and respiratory failure because they had COVID-19. A U.S. standard death certificate, in fact, would specify that COVID-19, the underlying cause of death, caused pneumonia, which in turn caused respiratory failure.

Pfizer Says Vaccine 100% Effective For Kids 12

Updated, Phase 3 trial findings show that a two-dose series of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for kids ages 12-15 was 100% effective against the coronavirus, measured seven days through over four months after the second dose. No serious safety concerns were observed, the companies said.

Effectiveness was consistently high across gender, race and ethnicity demographics, obesity and comorbidity status, the companies said. Pfizer and BioNTech plan to submit these data for scientific peer review for potential publication.

These additional data provide further confidence in our vaccines safety and effectiveness profile in adolescents, said Albert Bourla, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Pfizer. We look forward to sharing these data with the FDA and other regulators.

Infographic: How Many Mass Shootings Took Place In Us In 2022

There is no common definition of a mass shooting depending on which database is used, there were 3 to 268 mass shootings across the US this year.

On May 24, an 18-year-old gunman stormed the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, fatally shooting 19 children and two teachers, before being shot dead by police, casting a spotlight on gun violence in the United States.

The massacre is the latest in a years-long series of mass shootings in the US, which according to a tally by the non-profit Gun Violence Archive was the 213th such incident of 2022 in which four or more people were shot or killed not including the attacker in a single incident.

Based on the definition above, there have been at least 17 other mass shootings across the US since the Texas school shooting, one week ago.

However, because there is no common definition of a mass shooting, depending on which database is used, since the start of this year, the number of mass shootings across the US is anywhere between three and 268.

Sharing Data Analytics And Visualization Capabilities

To advance public health science, a cloud-based suite of technology, tools, and resources that collects, organizes and connects data across CDC was created. It offers the agency a streamlined way to process data, store it, and visualize it. It provides the means for breaking down data silos in favor of a centralized data ecosystem and allows CDC scientists to catalogue, analyze and publish findings faster than previously possible. To date, CDC has saved more than $8M dollars in infrastructure investments that would have been made to build smaller versions of data silos.

    CDC in Action

When the pandemic struck, there was no national system that could track both positive and negative test results. CDC and partners expanded Electronic Laboratory Reporting at breakneck speeds to deliver more than 1 million records per day directly from jurisdictions to CDC.

More Boosters Ahead Dr Fauci Isn’t Sure

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, said Monday during a White House press briefing that he isnt sure if Americans will need another COVID-19 boosters in the future.

The honest answer is that we do not know at this point, but were collecting data, Fauci said. We may not need to get boosted every six months or so but if we do, well address it. Well find the data, make it public and address it accordingly.

Fauci said multiple studies from across the globe have made it clear that boosters significantly enhance protection from COVID-19. The hope is that the booster dose gives the immune response a chance to mature and strengthen significantly, he said, and last longer than the second dose, which waned in effectiveness after several months. Boosters are currently available at more than 80,000 locations nationwide, according to the White House.

A Timeline Of The Shifting Geography Of The Pandemic

Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand how the geography of the coronavirus outbreak has changed over its course. For this analysis, we relied on official reports of deaths attributed to the novel coronavirus collected and maintained by The New York Times.

The estimates provided in this report are subject to several sources of error. There may be significant differences between the true number of deaths due to COVID-19 and the official reported counts of those deaths. There may also be variation across the states in the quality and types of data reported. For example, most states report deaths based on the residency of the deceased person rather than the location where they died. The New York Times collects data from many different local health agencies, and this likely leads to some additional measurement error.

This analysis relies on county-level data. Counties in the United States vary widely in their population sizes, so in many places in the essay, we divide counties into approximately equal-sized groups for comparability or report on population adjusted death rates rather than total counts of deaths.

The fall and winter months of 2020 and early 2021 were the deadliest of the pandemic to date. More than 370,000 Americans died of COVID-19 between October 2020 and April 2021 the geographic distinctions that characterized the earlier waves became much less pronounced.

Lincoln continued, “For example, there’s just a handful of memorials that were ever created. I count four — and it was literally left out of history books.”

There are currently no national COVID memorials honoring the dead in the U.S. or plans for one aside from the temporary displays of flags and flowers that have gone up in the past. , a nonprofit based in San Francisco, is one of the many groups pushing for local monuments to victims of the pandemic, with hopes of a national memorial one day.

Lincoln said the willingness to forget is evident when COVID-19 is left out of contemporary TV shows and movies that were made since 2020, like the pandemic never existed in those alternative universes.

“We should be, I think, maybe more shocked by how closely our situation currently resembles the experiences of 1918,” she said.

Meanwhile, in the U.S., advocates have been pushing lawmakers to make the first Monday of March a national COVID memorial day, but to no avail.

“If we’re coming to accept these kinds of deaths as normal, then I think it’s actually unsurprising that we’re seeing very little memorialization of these deaths,” Keller said. “We don’t memorialize deaths to cancer, we don’t memorialize deaths to flu, we don’t memorialize deaths to heart disease.”

He added, “I think part of it is also that Americans have grown sick and tired of the pandemic ⦠and memorialization tends to remind us of its ongoing presence.”
