How Many People Have Died From Covid-19 Vaccine

The Coronavirus Pandemic: Key Things To Know

CA person dies hours after receiving COVID-19 vaccine

The global surge. The coronavirus is spreading faster than ever at the start of 2022, but the last days of 2021 brought the encouraging news that the Omicron variant produces less severe illness than earlier waves. As such, governments are focusing more on expanding vaccination than limiting the spread.

Return to office. For many businesses, the recent surge has brought a swift reversal of return-to-office plans. In recent days, companies including Goldman Sachs and Chevron have begun to backtrack on workplace policies. Some are telling employees to stay home with just days, or even hours, to spare before their planned returns.

Staying safe.Worried about spreading Covid? Keep yourself and others safe by following some basic guidance on when to test and how to use at-home virus tests . Here is what to do if you test positive for the coronavirus.

Vaccination rates are lower for people in their 30s, and the number of people in that age group who died of the virus in August was almost double the number who died during January, the previous record month, according to provisional counts from the C.D.C. More than 3,800 people in their 40s died of Covid-19 in August, compared with 2,800 in January.

If you look back when the virus first started, the mantra was, this seems to be a disease that affects older people more severely, and fortunately younger people dont seem to get as sick, he said. Younger people now feel this is a virus that wont affect them.

The Under The Radar Theater Festival Is Canceled By Covid Disruptions

As a surge of coronavirus cases driven by the Omicron variant takes a growing toll on live performance, the Public Theater announced recently that it would cancel its Under the Radar festival, originally scheduled to begin on Jan. 12.

In a statement, the theater cited multiple disruptions related to the rapid community spread of the Omicron variant, including effects on staff availability, cancellations by artists and audience members, flight interruptions and visa processing delays.

It was not a time for a festival, he said. A festival is a celebration. Its supposed to be a coming together to celebrate this work, and it was not going to be a celebration.

What Is A Yellow Card

The Yellow Card scheme is a mechanism by which anybody can voluntarily report any suspected adverse reactions or side effects to the vaccine. It is very important to note that a Yellow Card report does not necessarily mean the vaccine caused that reaction or event. We ask for any suspicions to be reported, even if the reporter isnt sure if it was caused by the vaccine. Reports to the scheme are known as suspected adverse drug reactions .

Many suspected ADRs reported on a Yellow Card do not have any relation to the vaccine or medicine and it is often coincidental that symptoms occurred around the same time as vaccination. The reports are continually reviewed to detect possible new side effects that may require regulatory action, and to differentiate these from things that would have happened regardless of the vaccine or medicine being administered, for instance due to underlying or undiagnosed illness.

It is therefore important that the suspected ADRs described in this report are not interpreted as being proven side effects of COVID-19 vaccines. A list of the possible side effects of COVID-19 Pfizer/BioNTech Vaccine, COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca and COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna are provided in the product information document for healthcare professionals and the UK recipient information. These can also be found on the Coronavirus Yellow Card reporting site.

Don’t Miss: Hank Aaron Dies After Vaccine

Answered From Infectious Diseases Expert James Lawler Md Mph:

No. Here’s some context to explain the confusion.

After clinical trials, the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System is how the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention monitors vaccine safety.

VAERS is set up to capture potential adverse events caused by vaccines. It is the best tool we have to find what may be previously unrecognized and extraordinarily rare adverse events that may eventually be linked.

VAERS cannot and does not determine whether a vaccine caused something. The CDC states this clearly in their disclaimer: “A report to VAERS does not mean that the vaccine caused the adverse event, only that the adverse event occurred some time after vaccination.” The disclaimer continues, “The reports may contain information that is incomplete, inaccurate, coincidental or unverifiable.”

New York State Reports Rapid Rise In Covid Hospitalizations

Coronavirus: India records more than 24,000 COVID

Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York said coronavirus cases and hospitalizations have surged sharply across the state, with the number of deaths reported in a single day rising above 100 for the first time since last March.

Hospitalizations for the coronavirus are rising steeply in New York State, approaching the peak of last winters surge and driving the number of deaths reported in a single day above 100 for the first time since last March, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Monday.

Hospitalizations have now surpassed last winters peak in New York City, the governor said. She added that there were some signs that this wave of hospitalizations may not be as severe as past surges, but she said the rapid rise was still a trend that is troubling.

Were not in a good place, Im going to be really honest with you, Ms. Hochul said at a news briefing in Rochester, as she announced additional testing sites and the arrival of millions of rapid tests to help schools stay open through the virus spike.

Hospitalizations are being closely watched in New York City, one of the first places to be hit hard by the Omicron variant, as a bellwether for the nation as a whole. Omicron was first reported in New York City a month ago, and led to an enormous surge in new cases, from less than 2,500 per day to nearly 50,000 per day on New Years Eve.

How Reports Come Into Vaers

VAERS collects reports of possible adverse events that happen after vaccination. Anyone can submit a report to VAERSexternal icon, including patients, parents or caregivers, healthcare providers, and vaccine manufacturers.

Under Emergency Use Authorization, FDA requires healthcare professionals to report to VAERS certain adverse eventsexternal icon that occur after COVID-19 vaccination. CDC also encourages reporting of any medically important adverse event even if it isnt clear if the vaccine caused the health problem. This helps public health officials monitor and follow-up on possible safety problems. Learn more about selected adverse events reported to VAERS.

We Are Staying Open New York City Mayor Says Of Schools

Mayor Eric Adams of New York City insisted schools would remain open despite surging Omicron cases in the city. He said remote learning has been too damaging, especially to children in low-income neighborhoods and homeless students.

Were really excited about the opening of our schools, and we want to be extremely clear: The safest place for our children is in a school building. And we are going to keep our schools open, and ensure that our children are safe in a safe environment. Our children were exposed to an environment of crime and of uncertainty. It really traumatized parents that did not have child care. The remote learning aspect of it was terrible for in poorer communities, particularly those children that lived in homeless shelters or that lived were housing insecure. The food aspect schools provide primary meals for many students in this city. And then the socialization. We saw an increase in suicide, attempted suicides. Were not sending an unclear message of what is going to happen day to day. Im going to tell you whats going to happen day to day. We are staying open. Were going to do everything that we have to do to keep our schools open. And I know theres questions about staffing. I know this question about testing. Theres a lot of questions, but were going to turn those question marks into an exclamation point. Were staying open.

Were going to turn those question marks into an exclamation point: were staying open, Mr. Adams said.

England Will Require High School Students To Be Tested Before Returning To Classes

All secondary school students in England must be tested for the coronavirus before returning to classrooms after the holidays, the British government announced on Monday, in the latest measure aimed at controlling a rise in infections driven by the Omicron variant.

Schools have been provided with rapid test kits to administer on site when pupils begin returning to classes this week, officials said, adding that students should continue to test themselves at least twice a week. Older students, including those at universities, had already been advised to test themselves at home before returning to campuses.

We are doing all we can to minimize disruption this virus causes to everyday life, including keeping children in school, and regular testing is a key way to support schools and protect face-to-face teaching, Britains health minister, Sajid Javid, said in a statement.

Self-administered rapid antigen tests known in Britain as lateral-flow tests have become a ubiquitous part of British life over the past year, provided free by the government through the mail and at pharmacies. Over the holidays, however, supply difficulties and surging demand have often made them more difficult to obtain, with officials blaming a worldwide shortage.

Officials said on Monday that schools would have access to a separate supply route to order additional tests.

Of these people:

Based on detailed case information reported to PHAC from provinces and territories, cases following vaccination were reported more frequently among females and those aged 60 years and older . This may be the result of higher vaccination coverage in Canada among females and those aged 60 years and older due to the prioritization of older age groups and healthcare workers as part of the vaccine rollout.

Does Moderna’s Booster Shot Protect Against Omicron

Moderna said its COVID-19 booster does appear to provide protection against the omicron variant.

In an announcement earlier this month, the drug company said preliminary data from lab testing found the version of its booster currently in use in the United States and elsewhere provided increased antibody levels to neutralize the virus. But it also found that a double dose of the booster shot provided a much greater increase in those levels.

The drug company said its currently FDA-approved 50 microgram booster was found to increase neutralizing antibody levels against omicron 37-fold compared to pre-boost levels. Meanwhile, it found that a 100 microgram booster dose gave an 83-fold increase in neutralizing antibody levels.

The Fda Clears Booster Shots For 12

The Food and Drug Administration on Monday authorized booster doses of Pfizer-BioNTechs coronavirus vaccine for 12- to 15-year-olds, a group that became eligible for initial shots in May.

Regulators also shortened by a month the amount of time that adult and adolescent recipients of Pfizers vaccine should wait between their second and third doses, allowing them to seek booster shots five months after their second injections.

And they allowed some children aged 5 to 11 with immune deficiencies to seek a third shot, including those who have undergone solid organ transplants or have conditions that amount to an equivalent level of immunocompromise, the agency said in a statement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Preventions vaccine advisory committee is set to meet Wednesday to review the F.D.A. moves and decide whether to recommend the changes. If it does, the C.D.C.s director, Dr. Rochelle P. Walensky, is expected to quickly sign off on them.

The F.D.A. said that it examined data from Israel on more than 6,300 people in the 12- to 15-year-old age group who received booster shots at least five months after a second dose. That data enabled the F.D.A. to reassess the benefits and risks of the use of a booster in the younger adolescent population in the setting of the current surge in Covid-19 cases, the agency said.

South Koreas Vaccine Passes Now Have An Expiration Date

Russian scientist working on Covid

As of Monday, South Koreas vaccine passes will have a six-month expiration date, as the health authorities seek to manage the countrys living with Covid strategy.

Under the vaccine pass system, which started in mid-December, visitors to public places like restaurants, cafes, sports facilities and movie theaters must present proof of vaccination to gain access.

With the tightened rules, those who received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine must get a booster shot within six months, or their vaccine passes issued 14 days after getting a second dose will be void.

Fines or administrative action against violators will begin starting on Jan. 10, according to Yonhap News Agency. Both people who flout the rule and venues that fail to enforce it could face punishment.

The vaccine pass system has spurred debate in South Korea over whether it is forcing people to take the vaccine. The country has fully vaccinated 83 percent of its population, according to Our World in Data, and on Monday Korean health officials reported 3,129 new daily cases of the virus. After weeks of record-breaking case counts, the country has had a 34 percent drop in daily cases over the past week.

Other countries have also begun adding expiration dates to a primary vaccine regimen. Starting in February, the European Union Covid Certificate will have a validity period of nine months, and booster shots will be mandatory for travel across several countries on the continent.

Why We Need To Compare The Rates Of Death Between Vaccinated And Unvaccinated

During a pandemic, you might see headlines like Half of those who died from the virus were vaccinated.

It would be wrong to draw any conclusions about whether the vaccines are protecting people from the virus based on this headline. The headline is not providing enough information to draw any conclusions.

Lets think through an example to see this.

Imagine we live in a place with a population of 60 people.

Then we learn that of the 10 who died from the virus. And we learn that 50% of them were vaccinated.

The newspaper may run the headline Half of those who died from the virus were vaccinated. But this headline does not tell us anything about whether the vaccine is protecting people or not.

To be able to say anything, we also need to know about those who did not die: how many people in this population were vaccinated? And how many were not vaccinated?

Now we have all the information we need and can calculate the death rates:

  • of 10 unvaccinated people, 5 died the death rate among the unvaccinated is 50%
  • of 50 vaccinated people, 5 died the death rate among the vaccinated is 10%

We therefore see that the death rate among the vaccinated is 5-times lower than among the unvaccinated.

This example was illustrating how to think about these statistics in a hypothetical case. Below, you can find the real data for the situation in the COVID-19 pandemic now.

With Omicron Looming Over The Holidays Here’s How To Stay Safe

So far, reports of vaccines’ effectiveness against omicron is mixed.

“Certainly the data is concerning about the decreased effectiveness of two vaccine doses against omicron,” Chu said, “but booster doses seem to overcome that to a degree. And as with all the other surges, it will be the unvaccinated who will become seriously ill, hospitalized, and fill the hospitals past capacity.”

Osterholm notes health care systems are urging people to get vaccinated, warning that people who need emergency care could find an overloaded system when they rush to hospitals

“In many places right now in these states with these prolonged surges, we are beyond bending. We’re broken, in some of these institutions,” he said.

Returning to his curveball analogy, Osterholm said, “If the variants are 210-mile-an-hour curve balls, omicron is about a 500-mile-an-hour curveball.”

How We Conducted This Study

To evaluate the impact of the vaccination program in the United States, the researchers expanded their age-stratified, agent-based model of COVID-19 to include waning of naturally acquired or vaccine- elicited immunity, as well as booster vaccination.6,7 For the timelines of this study, the characteristics of three variants were included in the model, each with cumulative prevalence of at least 3 percent in the U.S., including B.1.526 , B.1.1.7 , and B.1.617.2 in addition to the original Wuhan-I SARS-CoV-2 strain.

The model parameters included the population demographics of the U.S., an empirically determined contact network accounting for pandemic mobility patterns, and age-specific risks of severe health outcomes due to COVID-19. The model incorporated data on daily vaccine doses administered in the U.S.8 The minimum age eligibility for vaccination was 16 years before May 13, 2021, after which children 12 to 15 became eligible for vaccination. Vaccination of children ages 5 to 11 with Pfizer-BioNTech started on November 2, 2021.

Vaccine efficacies against infection and symptomatic and severe disease for different vaccine types for each variant and by time since vaccination were drawn from published estimates. The model was calibrated to reported national incidence data between October 1, 2020, and November 30, 2021, and validated with infection, hospitalization, and death trends during the same period.
