What Are Your Questions About The Coronavirus Vaccine
Ideastream Public Media’s health team is answering as many questions as possible, with help from local experts in a range of fields. You can send us your questions with our online form, through our social media group, or call us at . We’ll keep the answers coming on our website and on the air.
A listener. Marc, submitted a question during a recent Sound of Ideas Reporters’ Roundtable program. He said: “Did the speaker on the show really just make the declarative statement that no one has died from the vaccine? Not looking for any sense of false equivalency or anything else, but has anybody looked at the online open VAERS data?”
Marc was referring to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, or VAERS, which has been around long before COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration operate the site that allows anyone to report an adverse event at any time.
As of August 30, 2021, there have been more than 369 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines administered in the U.S. During this time, VAERS received 7,218 reports of death among people who received a COVID-19 vaccine but a causal link to the vaccine has not been established, according to the CDC. “However, recent reports indicate a plausible causal relationship between the J& J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine and TTS, a rare and serious adverse eventblood clots with low platelets- which has caused death,” according to the CDC website.
Reports Of Death Following Vaccination Particularly In The Elderly
The TGA uses its adverse event reporting system to closely monitor reports of death following COVID-19 vaccination. During the early stages of the vaccine rollout in Australia and many other countries, deaths were reported following vaccination in older people living in aged care as this is where the vaccine rollout started. Many of these deaths were in frail elderly people and were coincidental with vaccination. This was confirmed following review by the TGA and medicine regulators in the UK, Europe and the US which found no specific safety concerns from use of the vaccines in older people.
However, it is possible in frail older people that even relatively mild and expected adverse reactions following the vaccination may contribute to deterioration of an underlying illness. For this reason, the Product Information documents for both the Pfizer and the AstraZeneca vaccines provide advice about vaccinating frail elderly people and warn that the potential benefits of vaccination must be weighed against the potential risks for each individual person.
The TGA reviews all deaths reported after vaccination and monitors for safety signals. Part of our analysis includes comparing expected natural death rates to observed death rates following immunisation. To date, the observed number of deaths reported after vaccination is actually less than the expected number of deaths.
Theres No Basis To Claim Thousands Have Died From Covid
If Your Time is short
This claim cites the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, which the CDC and FDA warn cannot be used on its own to verify if a vaccine has caused an event. It accepts reports before verifying them, and reports can usually contain information that may have errors or lacks details.
When used properly, VAERS can detect true adverse health effects.
The CDC confirmed six deaths following the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which resulted from a rare but serious adverse reaction of thrombocytopenia syndrome, or blood clotting.
Throughout 2021, misinformation based on the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System has cycled persistently throughout social media. A new claim has popped up via Instagram: that thousands of COVID-19 vaccine deaths reported in VAERS are an undercount of an actual number of deaths.
The shared a screenshot, showing a number of deaths it attributed to vaccines: 1,621 deaths from Johnson & Johnson, 4,799 deaths from Moderna, 13,039 deaths from Pfizer and 73 from unknown vaccines. Those numbers were from the United States only, the Instagram user wrote in the caption.
“Only 1% of deaths are reported according to Harvard study,” the user wrote.
But federal officials, health experts and organizations have warned repeatedly that correlation does not imply causation just because an adverse event is reported as having occurred does not mean that a vaccine was the cause.

How Would Differing Assumptions Affect These Results
Changing selected assumptions in our analysis could reduce or increase the estimates we report here. For example, our model assumes that the reopening of businesses and schools, along with the increase in social gatherings that occurred during summer 2021, continued despite the Delta wave. If people had restricted social activities and travel, or businesses or schools had closed in response to the Delta surge, many deaths and hospitalizations could have been averted even in the absence of vaccination. However, it seems unlikely that the entire nation would have returned to the restrictions imposed during the first year of the pandemic.
Conversely, the number of deaths estimated by the model may be too low if hospital capacity were exceeded . Moreover, the model estimates only death attributable to COVID-19. Preventable deaths due to other causes would have increased too, as occurred early in the pandemic in cities like New York City and Los Angeles.5
Is It Good To Have More Than One Vaccine Available
Absolutely. In fact, its highly desirable, says William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert and professor at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, because that would mean there would be more vaccine manufacturers working to actually produce the vaccine, and so we could more expeditiously try to vaccinate the population in the United States and beyond.
Kathleen Neuzil, M.D., professor in vaccinology and director of the Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, echoes Schaffners sentiment and points to the flu vaccine for comparison: There are multiple formulations on the market, including the injectable high-dose vaccine and the nasal spray vaccine, for example, which are recommended for different populations.
We really need every person on Earth, theoretically, to be able to receive this vaccine. So, to me, is a positive, because we need so much, she adds.

More than 90% of seniors have been fully vaccinated, but a third of them have yet to receive their first booster shot. Even with overall high vaccination rates in older populations, in recent months, during the omicron surge, 73% of deaths have been among those 65 and older.
Health experts said vaccines and boosters continue to provide significant protection against severe disease. However, waning immunity re-emphasizes the urgency of boosting older Americans and high-risk Americans with additional doses.
“This trend in increased risk among the elderly further supports the need for community wide immunization. Older populations, especially those with underlying conditions, continue to be at great risk of severe complications, especially as immunity wanes. The best way to protect them is to make sure everyone around them is fully immunized, Brownstein said.
All Americans over the age of 50, immunocompromised people over the age of 12, and people who received two doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, are currently eligible for a second booster.
Approximately 10.5 million people in the U.S. have received their second booster dose.
“Given the fact that immunity is waning, we’ve got to get people boosted,” Dr. Anthony Fauci told GBH Newss Boston Public Radio on Monday.
Compared to fully vaccinated and boosted adults, unvaccinated people were about 20 times more likely to die of COVID-19 and seven times more likely to require hospitalization.
Are The Vaccines Safe
Participants in the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson trials experienced side effects after vaccination, including injection-site pain, fever, chills, headaches, muscle aches and joint pain. These symptoms are usually mild to moderate in severity and are temporary. They are also in line with side effects that some people experience from other vaccines, including the flu shot and the vaccine to prevent shingles.
More serious reactions have occurred but are rare. Anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, has happened in a small number of people after COVID vaccination, the CDC says. This is why you may be asked to wait about 15 minutes after your shot or booster to monitor for symptoms. Vaccines providers are equipped with medicines to quickly treat the reaction.
Health officials are also monitoring rare reports of myocarditis and pericarditis in some adolescents and younger adults who have received the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Most of these patients who received care responded well to medicine and felt better quickly, the CDC says.

Vaccine Deaths Are Not Higher Than Covid
What was claimed
Official data shows twice as many people have died due to the Covid-19 vaccines in six months than people who have died of Covid-19 in 15 months.
This is completely untrue, and is based on misleading conclusions drawn from official data. It only counts Covid-19 deaths in England with no underlying conditions, and misuses reports of deaths after Covid-19 vaccines where no causal link can be proven.
An article claiming that twice as many people have died from the Covid-19 vaccines in six months than have died from the virus itself throughout the entire pandemic has been reshared by a number of websites.
This is not true. The official data the articles cite has been misleadingly presented to reach an incorrect conclusion.
Carlson Claims Thousands Died After Covid Jab
It’s 100% false” that people are dying from the Covid-19 vaccine, CNN’s says.We could be in much better position if it were not for people like Tucker Carlson who continue to embolden this vaccine hesitancy. It’s really very irritating.
CNN May 6, 2021
Carlsons latest assertion on 5 May has caused a huge backlash from the medical community, who have called the Fox hosts remarks dangerous and misleading. Tucker Carlson Tonight is aired during primetime in the US and is the most-watched news show on cable in the US with around four million viewers on average. “Between late December of 2020 and last month, a total of 3,362 people apparently died after getting the covid vaccine in the United States 3,362,” Carlson said. “Thats an average of roughly 30 people every day. The actual number is almost certainly higher than that, perhaps vastly higher than that. Its clear that what is happening now, for whatever reason, is not even close to normal.”

Austrian Websites Fan The Flames
On Sept. 14, another Austrian website, Wochenblick, posted a story with a provocative headline: Dead doctors, dead mothers: Why have so many people suddenly dropped dead? The article included a list of unexplained deaths, claiming that many appeared to be vaccinated and asserting that heart damage was one possible side effect. Is this just coincidence, or could there be something that connects all of these deaths? the article asked. If its related to the coronavirus vaccines, there could very well be many more of these unexplained deaths very soon.
It was a self-fulfilling prophecy. A few weeks later, on Oct. 4, Wochenblick zeroed in on athletes: Young people die after vaccination athletes suddenly collapse! Deaths were becoming a Twitter trend, the article said, promoting a Twitter hashtag to collect reports of sudden, unexpected deaths. The number of cases of this heart disease is apparently literally shooting through the roof at the moment, the article said.
Correctiv, a German fact-checking organization, in September exposed how Wochenblick and Report24 appear to operate in tandem to spread false information, including attempting to influence elections in Germany. Report24 was created in March apparently by a group of Wochenblick employees after an editorial dispute.
Norbert Geroldinger, managing director of Wochenblick, did not respond to a request for comment.
Here’s The Latest Victim I Wonder What The Cause Is It Only Started Happening After The Vaccines Rolled Out And It’s Only Happening To Vaccinated People The Cdc Refuses To Investigate
The ink hadnt even dried on my story on the death on June 12 of a healthy young teenager, 17-year-old Gwen Casten, who died in her sleep when I read this article about another high-profile vaccine-related death of a healthy 34-year-old who also apparently died in her sleep on Jun 20, 2022, just 8 days after Gwen Casten died.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The cause of Dani Hampsons death has not been revealed but how does someone die in the very early hours of the morning you are going to be married? Its most likely she died in her sleep.
However, the rest of this article still applies even if it is later discovered she died from something else.
Isnt it odd that nowadays, when people die, there isnt a cause? Have you noticed the pattern too as noted in this tweet?
Just 8 days between these two black swan events.
No doubt this trend will continue as I pointed out in my earlier article that these are not isolated cases at all. All the dead healthy young people who died in their sleep were all vaccinated with the COVID vaccines. Thats the one thing they all have in common.
So we now have 8 black swans this year, and none that Im aware of before that .
Fortunately for the vaccine makers, no health authority in the world is investigating these deaths because healthy young people dying in their sleep is the new normal.

Three Michigan People Who Died After Vaccine Actually Had Earlier Covid
Three Michigan residents who tested positive for COVID-19 after they were fully vaccinated, and who later died, were in fact infected by the virus before their vaccinations.
The three deaths were initially portrayed as among rare instances of breakthrough infections that is, the small fraction of people infected by COVID-19 well after finishing vaccines that are meant to protect them from the virus.
Now, it appears, the three represented likely cases of prolonged viral shedding from earlier infections, according to a spokesperson for the state health department, and their deaths may not even have been related to the coronavirus.
The deaths were initially included among 246 people the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said earlier this month had tested positive for COVID more than two weeks after completing vaccines.
MDHHS spokesperson Lynn Sutfin told Bridge Michigan this week the deaths have since undergone a more detailed review, and all three had histories of earlier infection. Moreover, neither COVID-19 nor any other acute respiratory infection was identified on the trios death certificates.
A fourth Michigan death is currently under review by a local health department, Sutfin said.
At least 16 people of the 346 confirmed cases were hospitalized.
Covid Vaccines Not Linked To Deaths Major Us Study Finds
A major study of vaccine side-effects in the US found no link between two Covid jabs and the number of deaths recorded after vaccination.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said 92% of reported side-effects after the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were mild.
About 4,500 people died after being vaccinated, in the US, up to June 2021.
But no unusual patterns in the data were detected that might suggest a link to the vaccine itself.
Study author Dr Tom Shimabukuro said: ” reassuring that reactions to both mRNA vaccines are generally mild and subside after one or two days – confirming reports from clinical trials and post-authorisation monitoring.”

“At a time when many in the U.S. have given up on vaccinations, these numbers are a stark reminder of the effectiveness of vaccines in fighting this pandemic,” said Stefanie Friedhoff, associate professor of the practice in health services, policy and practice at the Brown University School of Public Health, and a co-author of the analysis. “We must continue to invest in getting more Americans vaccinated and boosted to save more lives.”
Although the national average indicated that approximately 50% of deaths were preventable, researchers said there were large differences among states — ranging from 25% to 74% vaccine-preventable deaths.
Should I Still Get The Vaccine If I’ve Had Covid
Yes. Research has not yet shown how long you are protected from getting COVID-19 again after recovering from COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and vaccination will boost protection. If you were treated for COVID-19 with monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma, you should wait 90 days before getting a COVID-19 vaccine. Talk to your doctor if you are unsure what treatments you received or if you have more questions about getting a COVID-19 vaccine.

Can I Still Get Covid
Because no vaccine is 100 percent effective, breakthrough infections may occur. But experts stress that the vaccines remain highly protective against hospitalization and death if you do catch COVID.
Breakthrough infections, however, can contribute to the spread of COVID-19. New data show that fully vaccinated people who become infected with the highly transmissible delta variant can pass the virus on to others, which is why health officials now recommend that vaccinated individuals in areas of high community transmission wear a face mask in indoor public settings.

Getting more Americans boosted against Covid-19 could make a big difference as the country heads into the fall and winter, Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDAs Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said Monday.
Its really important that we try to get the half or a little bit more than a half of Americans who have only received two doses to get that third dose, he said. That may make a difference moving forward here, and it may particularly make a difference now that were coming into yet another wave of Covid-19.
