RICHMOND, Va. — Walgreens Pharmacy said that it will begin offering the COVID-19 vaccine at some of its stores in Virginia starting Wednesday.

The company did not disclose which stores would have the vaccines but said appointments would be required to receive them and registration opened on Tuesday.

Registration can be made either online or by calling 1-800-Walgreens.

On Tuesday morning, the website said there were appointments available in the Richmond area, but by the afternoon the website said there were no appointments available.

The company said people could for when a store near them has availability.

The company said it was receiving an initial allotment of 3,510 doses under the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program.

Last week, the Virginia Department of Health announced Virginia would receive an additional 26,000 doses of the vaccine through that program to be shared among various independent pharmacies and chains . CVS Pharmacy is already receiving a weekly shipment of 26,000 doses.

The company said eligibility for the vaccines is based on Virginia guidelines.

What is unclear is if the chain is utilizing Virginia’s vaccine waitlist.

Last week, State Vaccine Coordinator Dr. Danny Avula said all of the new pharmacies coming on board with the federal program had expressed their desire to work off that list.

CBS 6 has request clarification from both Walgreens and VDH.

Walgreens on Tuesday again apologized for a technical glitch with the COVID vaccine scheduler on its website, marking the third time in as many weeks that the company has acknowledged issues with its online appointment sign-up process.

Users began to report on Monday that the Walgreens website had booked second-dose vaccination appointments without also booking the preceding first doses. On Tuesday, Walgreens said that was a glitchthat has since been resolved and that they would be reaching out to those impacted.

A technical glitch allowed patients in select stores to book appointments for second dose time slots without also booking their first dose. This issue has been resolved, a representative for Walgreens said in a statement Tuesday evening.

We are committed to honoring vaccination appointments that have been scheduled in our system, and our team members are reaching out to all patients affected to attempt to accommodate them, the company continued. If supply does not allow us to vaccinate some of these patients, we will prioritize them for appointments as additional vaccine inventory is available. We apologize for the inconvenience.

The company did not respond to multiple requests on how many people the glitch impacted, though hundreds of members of the Chicago Vaccine Hunters Facebook group posted and commented that they were experiencing that same issue.

Walgreens is offering a third dose of the Pfizer and Moderna coronavirus vaccine to certain immunocompromised people.

Currently, the Center for Disease Control is recommending the third shot for the moderate to severely immunocompromised. They recommend that you speak with your Dr. before getting the shot. The CDC says that fully vaccinated immunocompromised people have accounted for a large proportion of hospitalized breakthrough cases, and that suggests immunocompromised people are more likely to transmit the virus to household contacts.

People who are immunocompromised include those who:

  • People who have been receiving active cancer treatments for tumors or cancers of the blood.
  • People who have received an organ transplant and are taking medications that suppress their immune systems.
  • Anyone who has received a stem cell transplant in the last two years.
  • Those who are taking immune system suppressing drugs.
  • People who have moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency.
  • Anyone with advanced or untreated HIV infection.
  • Those who are in active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids.
