    Problem Solvers Looking Into Issues

COVID-19 Vaccination: Here’s How to Register Yourself Through Co-WIN

The Problem Solvers are investigating multiple reported issues with Coloradans, who should be eligible, not showing up on the states CIIS database.

Specifically, a veteran reached out to the Problem Solvers saying the outpatient Veterans Affairs facility he received his vaccines in was in Cheyenne Wyoming. That veteran is concerned he and other veterans may not be eligible.

A spokesperson for CDPHE says, We are pleased to announce that individuals vaccinated through the VA will be eligible. Discussions with the Department of Defense are ongoing, and we are confident we will have more positive news to report soon.

The spokesperson said, There are more than 5.6 million COVID-19 vaccine entries in CIIS, and we are confident the database is working as it should. We have 10 staff members dedicated to ensuring the data is accurate.

CDPHE also said Coloradans who were vaccinated out of state may not be on file:

Coloradans who were vaccinated out-of-state likely do not have their COVID-19 vaccine on their record in CIIS. CIIS does not automatically receive vaccination data for Colorado residents from non-Colorado providers. They can contact the CIIS Help Desk, and if they provide proof of vaccination, CIIS staff can add them.

    Booster Shots And Third Doses

On December 9, CDC recommended people ages 16-17 also receive a booster of the COVID-19 vaccine for continued protection. Please see here for more details.

On Oct. 21, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Moderna and Janssen COVID-19 vaccine booster doses for people at higher risk for COVID-19. Please see details below for recommendations on all three vaccine types. Please bring your vaccine card when you receive your booster shot!

MODERNA: the updated CDC guidance recommends Moderna booster doses for people:

    • 65 years and older,
    • residents in long-term care settings,
    • people aged 1864 years with underlying medical conditions, and
    • people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of where they work or live.

People who originally received the Moderna vaccine may get a booster dose six months or more after they received their second dose of vaccine. Your booster cannot be given before the 6 months has elapsed. It may be given after the 6 month time frame.

JOHNSON & JOHNSON: Booster doses are also recommended for:

    • anyone age 18 and older who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

People who originally received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine may get a booster dose two months or more after their single dose. Your booster cannot be given before the 2 months has elapsed. It may be given after the 2 month time frame.

People who are recommended to receive an additional dose include people who have:

    Plan For Your Second Appointment

If you will be getting a two-dose vaccine, its helpful to consider the timing of when you will be due for your second dose appointment:

    • The Pfizer vaccine is two doses given approximately 21 days apart.
    • The Moderna vaccine is two doses given approximately 28 days apart.

If you will be leaving Boulder at the end of the semester, here are some things to consider:

    • Its important to at least get your first dose of the vaccine as soon as you are able to, preferably before traveling.
    • Depending on when you are due for your second dose, if you will be leaving the Boulder area you may need to plan to look for a vaccine appointment in your home city or state. Know that it could be harder to find a second dose at a location that is different from where you received your first dose.
    • If you arent able to get a second dose at the designated time its still important to schedule an appointment with another provider to receive your second dose as soon as youre able to.

How Are Vaccinations Working In Nursing Homes And Long

Most residents and staff of Colorados long-term care facilities were offered first and second doses through a federal program that provided free on-site vaccinations in late 2020 and early 2021. The program has ended, but the federal government continues to allocate COVID-19 vaccines and boosters to pharmacies that are partnered with long-term care facilities to provide vaccinations, mainly on-site. Facilities that dont have a pharmacy partner are encouraged to work with local or state health departments or the federal government, if need be to provide vaccinations. Most nursing home staff are required to be fully vaccinated by Jan. 4 as per a federal mandate for staff in health care facilities that receive Medicare or Medicaid dollars. Most assisted living, memory-care and other long-term care facilities are not subject to this mandate, as they are regulated by the states, some of which have their own mandates for workers.

Want To Check Your Colorado Covid Vaccine Drawing Eligibility Theres A Hotline For That

If you are vaccinated against COVID-19 but unsure whether youre eligible for Colorados $1 million vaccine cash giveaway, theres now a hotline to help.

Coloradans have reported difficulties finding their immunization record in the states database. The search parameters are extremely specific the database will fail to yield results if someone enters a nickname or different email address than the one used to schedule the vaccine appointment. Some peoples records werent uploaded by their vaccine provider at all.

The state has opened an alternative to the online database, allowing people to call 1-877-268-2926 instead. A human representative will check someones eligibility by running their first and last name, date of birth, and physical mailing address through the database.

If the record is incorrect, the hotline will not fix the discrepancy. People in that situation should contact their vaccine provider directly.

Colorado is holding five weekly drawings of $1 million to incentivize people to get vaccinated. State vaccination rates started falling off a cliff in early May.

Sally Sliger, a health care worker in Mead, was announced as the first $1 million winner last week. There will be four more drawings. Vaccinated Coloradans 18 and up are automatically enrolled, assuming their vaccination was recorded by the provider.

Is An Additional Dose The Same As A Booster Shot

An additional dose refers to an extra dose of vaccine for people who did not receive an adequate immune response to the initial series. In contrast, booster doses are for those who received full response but are now experiencing a natural waning of the vaccine effectiveness.

Additional COVID-19 doses are available for many immunocompromised patients 28+ days after the initial series.
