Special Olympics Drops Vaccine Rule After Floridas $275m Fine Threat

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. The Special Olympics has dropped a coronavirus vaccine mandate for its games in Orlando after Florida moved to fine the organization $27.5 million for violating a state law against such rules.

Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday announced the organization had removed the requirement for its competition in the state, which is scheduled to run June 5 to June 12.

In Florida, we want all of them to be able to compete. We do not think its fair or just to be marginalizing some of these athletes based on a decision that has no bearing on their ability to compete with honor or integrity, DeSantis said at a news conference in Orlando.

The Florida health department notified the Special Olympics of the fine in a letter Thursday that said the organization would be fined $27.5 million for 5,500 violations of state law for requiring proof of coronavirus vaccination for attendees or participants.

Florida law bars businesses from requiring documentation of a COVID-19 vaccination. DeSantis has strongly opposed vaccine mandates and other virus policies endorsed by the federal government.

In a statement on its website, the Special Olympics said people who were registered but unable to participate because of the mandate can now attend.

Tips For Locating Vaccination Records For Adults

Immunization records that exist for adults are usually records that were provided to their parents when they received vaccines as children and in the adults medical record of the physician or clinic where vaccines were given. There is no national database that maintains the immunization records for adults.

If official copies of immunization records are needed or if there is a desire to update personal records, the following places may provide some assistance to obtaining these records:

  • Request immunization records from parents or caregivers if they still have them.
  • Search baby books or other saved documents from childhood
  • Contact the high school and/or college health services attended for dates of any immunizations received. Please be advised that records are only maintained for a certain length of time.
  • Contact previous employers that may have required immunizations for employment purposes.
  • Contact your health care provider or county health department. Please be advised that records are maintained by the health care providers office for a limited number of years.
  • Check with the county health department to determine if you have immunizations recorded in the Florida SHOTS system.

Walgreens Covid Vaccine Registration: Find A Vaccination Appointment In Florida

Gov. Ron DeSantis announced last week new changes to vaccination eligibility.

As of Monday, all individuals age 40 and older will be eligible to receive the COVID-19. Next Monday, April 5, those age 18 and older will be able to receive the vaccine as well.

Weve been able to expand eligibility to those age 50 and above and weve seen additional success, DeSantis said Thursday. Now because of this success, I am pleased to announce additional vaccine eligibility expansions.

DeSantis noted that the state has vaccinated more than 70% of its 4.4 million seniors, adding, We are ready to take this step.

Currently, there are roughly 1,6000 pharmacies across the state that offer the COVID-19 vaccine, including Publix, CVS, Walmart and Sams Club and Winn Dixie.

DeSantis also announced that in the coming days, Walgreens will be expanding to more than 400 locations throughout the state to bring their total to more than 600 locations.

We have made great progress and I look forward to continuing to work hard to make sure everyone in Florida who wants a shot, can get a shot, DeSantis said. No mandate, but access for all.

Floridians are encouraged to pre-register at www.myvaccine.fl.gov. Once pre-registered, theyll be contacted when the vaccine is available in their area.

Vaccine appointments can be made by visiting Walgreens.com/ScheduleVaccine or calling 1-800-Walgreens.

Things To Consider Before Scheduling Your Appointment

  • If you have had a severe allergic reaction to any vaccine or injectable therapy , please tell the care team when you come in for your vaccination.
  • If you had a severe allergic reaction to a COVID-19 vaccine, you should not receive a second booster of the same vaccine at this time.
  • If you had COVID-19 in the past 90 days, you may choose to delay having the COVID-19 vaccine at this time. Its uncommon to get reinfected within 90 days after having COVID-19. Please note: You must have recovered from COVID-19 when you get the vaccine.
  • If you received monoclonal antibodies or convalescent plasma as part of COVID-19 treatment, you should delay getting the vaccine for at least 90 days after your treatment.
  • If you are immunocompromised, please talk to your healthcare provider before receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.
  • If you are pregnant, suspect you are pregnant, or are breastfeeding, the CDC recommends you should be vaccinated, based on current research and safety data.

After receiving your vaccine:

Please review V-safe After Vaccination Health Checker, a smartphone-based tool that uses text messaging and web surveys to provide personalized health check-ins with the CDC after you receive a COVID-19 vaccination.

Florida’s focus on the vaccination of seniors continued Wednesday with the opening of another senior community vaccination site in Manatee County, Gov. Ron DeSantis tweeted.

Hosted by the Florida Division of Emergency Management, the “pop-up” vaccination site at Premier Sports Campus, 5895 Post Blvd., Lakewood Ranch aims to serve the 3,000 Manatee County residents who live in zip codes 34202 and 34211, Manatee County confirmed in a statement Tuesday.

The state’s vaccine rollout has been hampered by the winter storm sweeping across the country. “Due to the inclement weather there are delays in vaccine shipments to Florida. We stand at the ready to quickly deploy vaccine supplies to our communities once they arrive,” DeSantis tweeted Wednesday.

The storm has seen the shipment of 208,000 Moderna vaccine doses delayed, while the “vast, vast majority” of a weekly Pfizer vaccine delivery hasn’t been delayed by the severe weather, the governor said at a press briefing Wednesday.

Florida received 132,000 first doses of the Pfizer vaccine this week and 9,000 more are expected to arrive by Thursday morning.

“We are hopeful we will get a delayed package,” Hollingsworth added.
