How To Schedule Covid Vaccine Indiana

Why Were The Covid

Indiana teachers now eligible for COVID-19 vaccine

Though the COVID-19 vaccines were developed and approved quickly, its important to note that the clinical efficacy and quality of the product was not compromised. The COVID-19 vaccines are some of the most effective vaccines weve ever seen. Through the collaborative efforts of national and international organizations, many efficiencies were developed in the coordination of the process.

Some of these include:

  • The technology does not require months of virus growth in the lab.
  • Because COVID-19 was widespread, a large number of clinical trial participants were quickly enrolled within weeks instead of months or years.
  • The vaccines were manufactured “at risk.” This means the vaccines were manufactured while awaiting FDA approval so it could be shipped to hospitals within hours. Typically manufacturing that many doses would happen after approval.

These efficiencies helped to reduce the time it required for hospitals and other healthcare facilities to receive the vaccine.

I Have A History Of Allergies Or Severe Allergic Reactions Should I Get The Covid

IU Health is following the CDCs recommended guidance for vaccination and history of allergies or severe allergic reactions.

  • If you have a history of allergies to oral medications, foods, pets, insects, venom, environment, latex, etc. you may proceed with vaccination you will be observed for 15-30 minutes after vaccination.
  • If you have a history of any immediate allergic reaction to vaccines or injectable therapies , you may proceed with vaccination under caution additional questions may be asked and additional waiting room/observation time will be required for 30 minutes.
  • If you have a history of allergy to any component of the vaccines, you should not get the vaccine at this time.
  • If you have been prescribed an EpiPen, but have not had an anaphylactic reaction requiring EpiPen use or ER treatment with epinephrine, you may choose to get the vaccine. Additional questions may be asked and additional waiting room/observation time will be required for 30 minutes.
  • If you have a severe allergic reaction, or an immediate allergic reaction of any severity, after receiving the first vaccine dose for Pfizer or Moderna, you should not receive the second dose.

Can Eligible Individuals Receive The Covid

Yes. According to the CDC, eligible individuals, including children, may receive the seasonal flu vaccine at the same time they are receiving the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. There is no need to stagger vaccinations. Additionally, if an individual has already received a flu shot, they can receive their COVID-19 vaccine at any time.

The vaccination procedures include a patient screening checklist to assess the risk of reaction. All patients are monitored for 15 minutes after administration injection, or longer for people with a history of severe allergic reactions. Our immunizers are equipped with appropriate medications, such as epinephrine and antihistamines. Further information on COVID-19 Vaccines and allergic reactions can be found here

What Do I Need To Do/know About The Johnson & Johnsons Janssen Covid

The FDA and the CDC are confident that the vaccine is safe and effective at preventing COVID-19. At this time, the available data suggests that the chance of developing a rare blood disorder thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome is very low, and the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks.

For women between the ages of 18 and 49, this adverse event is rare, occurring at a rate of about 7 per 1 million vaccinated women. For women 50 years and older and men of all ages, this adverse event is even more rare. Women younger than 50 should be aware that other COVID-19 vaccines are available where this risk has not been seen.

Patients who receive the Janssen vaccine should monitor for severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain or shortness of breath for 2 weeks after administration.

If experiencing symptoms, patients should contact their healthcare provider.

The Janssen, Pfizer-BioNTech, and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are offered in select CVS locations. Find locations and schedule your appointment.

Do I Still Need To Wear A Mask After Receiving The Vaccine

People are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose in a 2-dose series, such as Pfizer or Moderna, or 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine such as Johnson & Johnsons Janssen vaccine. If you do not meet these requirements, please continue to take precautions, such as mask wearing, until youre fully vaccinated.

If fully vaccinated:

What To Expect When Getting Your Vaccine

Getting your COVID-19 vaccine will be much like getting any other vaccine. You should wear short sleeves or a shirt with sleeves that can easily be rolled up to your upper arm.

Youll receive the injection in your upper arm. Before you leave the vaccine site, youll be given the appointment date and time for your second dose, depending on which vaccine you get. It is ideal to return to the same location for your second dose.

In the 24-48 hours after receiving your vaccine, your arm may feel sore. Other potential side effects will likely be mild and may include fever, fatigue, muscle or joint pain, or headache. People who get the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine most often feel a greater immune response after their second dose.

If you feel any of the above side effects, this simply means your body is building protection against COVID-19. Its a good thing!

If you develop symptoms more than 48 hours after receiving the vaccine or they last for more than 24 hours, they could be unrelated to the vaccine. Stay home and contact your doctor.

What Is Different About The Child Dose

Coronavirus in Indiana: Vaccination updates for children, boosters

Just like the adult version, this vaccine entails two shots of a vaccine, given at least three weeks apart. The dose is about a third of what adults received, however, said Dr. James Wood, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Riley Hospital for Children.

They were able to show that a smaller dose produced same amount of antibodies as in adults, he said. Anytime we can use a lower dose, thats less side effects.

Different packaging will be used purple for adult doses and orange for pediatric doses to guard against mix-ups. Because childrens arms tend to be smaller than those of their parents, smaller needles will likely be used, Wood said.

How Was The Vaccine Developed And Approved So Quickly

Its true that we developed a vaccine remarkably quickly, less than a year after the first known cases of COVID. This does not mean corners were cut, nor unsafe shortcuts taken. Though this particular virus is new, researchers have been studying this family of coronaviruses for a decade, so they already knew the best way to target a vaccine when the current virus emerged.

The vaccine technology itself also had already been developed and was standing by for just this kind of situation. For example, the same type of technology used in Americas first COVID vaccines has proven safe and effective in preventing cases of deadly Ebola in Africa. The mRNA technology has been found to work more effectively with our immune system than older vaccine technologies.

The clinical studies of the vaccines were not rushed, but were conducted in the normal length of time. Some were paused to investigate unusual illnessesand that, in fact, is normal for clinical studies, a sign that the studies were being conducted properly.

Also helping vaccines arrive so quickly: Millions of dollars were invested so multiple teams could work simultaneously and share the tasks, the government began its review of the studies right away once they were submitted, and factories already were working on vaccines during governmental reviews so shipments could begin immediately.
