Will The Vaccines Work To Stop Covid
When it announced its approval of the Pfizer vaccine Aug. 23, the FDA stated that the vaccine is 91% effective in preventing COVID-19 disease across age, gender, race and ethnicity demographics. COVID-19vaccines are aimed at preventing clinical disease. We do not know whether they prevent transmissionof the virus.
Modernareported a 94.5% effective rate for its vaccine in its initial late-stage data. The FDA reportedthat the Single-Shot Janssen COVID-19 vaccine from Johnson & Johnson was approximately 67% effective in preventing moderate to severe COVID-19 occurring at least 14 days after vaccination and 66% effective in preventing moderate to severe COVID-19 occurring at least 28 days after vaccination. The effectiveness of the single-shot Janssen vaccine from Johnson & Johnson appears to be lower than the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. However, the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine was tested in regions where some of the variants had become prominent, whereas the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines had been tested prior to that time.
For specific data, guidance, side effects and more, please see theFDAs fact sheets on the three COVID-19 vaccines:

Can Patients Choose Which Covid
At this time, our select CVS Pharmacy locations that are currently offering the COVID-19 vaccine to eligible populations have either the Moderna, Pfizer or Janssen vaccine – not more than one type at this time. Patients will be able to see which CVS Pharmacy location has which vaccine and appointment availability on cvs.com before scheduling. Depending on which vaccine you receive, you will be prompted to schedule a second dose if needed.
Why Are Booster Shots Recommended For Certain Groups Now
- Peoples responses to their initial vaccination vary. Younger people, for example, tend to produce more antibodies to begin with than older adults. That means months later when antibody levels have naturally declined, some people may still have enough to fend off infection while others dont.
- All approved COVID-19 vaccines main purpose is to prevent severe illness, hospitalization and death.
- The COVID-19 vaccines used in the U.S. still offer strong protection against severe COVID-19. However, with the Delta variant, public health experts are starting to see reduced protection against mild and moderate illness. Individuals with breakthrough cases can spread COVID-19 to others.

Will The First And Second Appointments Be Booked At The Same Time
When you have received your first dose, an appointment for your second dose will be made for you. You will receive an email with the second appointment details within the next five to seven days. This email will have instructions on how to change this booking, if is not convenient for you.
- Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine should be administered as close to 36 weeks from your first vaccination.
- AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine should be administered as close as possible to 12 weeks for the best protection. Please note that while the Delta strain of COVID-19 is circulating in our community, you are encouraged to get your second dose of AstraZeneca as early as 8 weeks from your first vaccination.
However, if you do not receive your second dose within the above timeframes, there is no cause for panic or concern. You will still be afforded excellent protection against severe COVID-19 infection and you do not need to start the vaccination regimen again.
Completing your vaccine course is very important, even if your second dose is outside the recommended window.
You should not attend a COVID-19 vaccination appointment if you:
- are unwell with fever, cough, runny nose or other symptoms that could be from COVID-19
- are awaiting COVID-19 test results
- have tested positive with COVID-19 and you are in isolation
- are in quarantine
- are a close contact of someone with COVID-19.
