Vaccination And Boosters Are A Critical Defense Against The Omicron Variant

The more contagious omicron variant of the virus is surging in our region. Your best protection, and the most effective tool we have to slow the spread of the disease and avoid overwhelming our hospitals, is to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and to get a booster as soon as you’re eligible.

Millions of people around the world have had the vaccines. They have been shown to be safe and effective at preventing serious illness and hospitalization. This remains true for the omicron variant, especially after the booster shot.

We follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in giving COVID-19 vaccinations.

    • Vaccines are authorized for everyone ages 5 and older.
    • Additional doses are recommended for certain people who have conditions that weaken their immune system. This now includes children ages 5-11 with these conditions. If your child is eligible for an additional dose for this reason, please talk to your Vanderbilt provider or family pediatrician.
    • “Booster” doses are . You should get a booster as soon as you can .

What Do I Need To Do/know About The Johnson & Johnsons Janssen Covid

The FDA and the CDC are confident that the vaccine is safe and effective at preventing COVID-19. At this time, the available data suggests that the chance of developing a rare blood disorder thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome is very low, and the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks.

For women between the ages of 18 and 49, this adverse event is rare, occurring at a rate of about 7 per 1 million vaccinated women. For women 50 years and older and men of all ages, this adverse event is even more rare. Women younger than 50 should be aware that other COVID-19 vaccines are available where this risk has not been seen.

Patients who receive the Janssen vaccine should monitor for severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain or shortness of breath for 2 weeks after administration.

If experiencing symptoms, patients should contact their healthcare provider.

The Janssen, Pfizer-BioNTech, and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines are offered in select CVS locations. Find locations and schedule your appointment.

Vaccine Development: Vaccines Approved For Use And In Clinical Trials

The speed at which the first COVID-19 vaccines were developed was extraordinary. We have previously looked into the history of vaccine development. The measles vaccine was found relatively rapidly: it took only 10 years from the discovery of the pathogen to the development of the first vaccine. But for typhoid it took more than a century, and for some diseases for which weve known the pathogens for more than a century we still havent found an effective vaccine.

The development of a vaccine against COVID-19 has been much faster than the development of any other vaccine. Within less than a year several successful vaccines have already been announced and were approved for use in some countries.

The hope is that even more manufacturers develop vaccines for COVID-19. This will be important because eventually a very large share of the world population needs to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

We are on the way to several vaccines against COVID-19 vaccine trackers monitor the progress:

Several institutions maintain websites on which they list COVID-19 candidate vaccines that are currently being developed:

    Oxford/AstraZeneca, Sinopharm/Beijing, Sinovac, Sputnik V

What Should I Do With My Vaccine Card

You should get a small white card at your vaccination appointment with your name, birth date, name of the vaccine you received and the date it was administered. If you receive the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, bring your card when you get your second shot. You may need your vaccine card to schedule a third vaccine dose, for certain immunocompromised people, or a booster shot. You may also need it for certain kinds of travel or other activities, so keep it in a safe place. You can take a photo of it with your smartphone for your own records. Experts say that posting a photo of your card to social media could make you vulnerable to identity theft. If youve lost your vaccine card, call the site where you were vaccinated to request a new one or a copy of your vaccination record. You can also contact your state health department to request a replacement card or a copy of your record.
