Hair Shedding Often Stops On Its Own

Its normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day. When the body sheds significantly more hairs every day, a person has excessive hair shedding. The medical term for this condition is telogen effluvium.

Excessive hair shedding is common in people who have experienced one the following stressors:

  • Lost 20 pounds or more

  • Given birth

  • Experiencing lots of stress

  • Had high fever

  • Recovering from an illness, especially if it included high fever

  • Stopped taking birth-control pills

Most people notice the excessive hair shedding a few months after the stressful event. For example, a new mom can see excessive hair shedding about two months after giving birth. The shedding usually peaks about four months after giving birth. This shedding is normal and temporary.

As your body readjusts, the excessive shedding stops. Within six to nine months, the hair tends to regains its normal fullness.

If the stressor stays with you, however, hair shedding can be long lived. People who are constantly under a lot of stress can have long-term excessive hair shedding.

Be Gentle With Your Hair

Doctors say the hair loss is likely linked to the stress and trauma of battling COVID-19. Telogen effluvium, a condition where hair stops growing after someone endures trauma, is likely the underlying cause of this hair loss.

Dr. Patrick Angelos, author of “The Science and Art of Hair Restoration: A Patient’s Guide,” told Insider four ways to help people, including COVID-19 survivors, reduce hair loss after an illness or trauma.

Treat Other Underlying Medical Issues That Might Be Contributing To The Hair Loss

Issues like hormonal imbalances, low thyroid, and iron or iodine deficiency can all exacerbate any hair loss you are already experiencing due to the stress of COVID-19, according to Angelos.

Getting medical treatment for them can help the restoration process go faster.

“Avoid overuse of supplements and medications,” Angelo added. “Since supplements such as testosterone, human growth hormone, whey, and DHEA can cause thinning and hair loss, especially avoid excessive use of these.”

Lasting Hearing Problems Hair Loss As Consequences Of Covid

British researchers have reported that patients recovering from infection with COVID-19 experience lingering hearing problems. For the study published in the International Journal of Audiology, 120 UK patients who had been hospitalised for COVID-19 were analysed in a phone survey, reported WebMD.

The findings showed that 13 per cent patients reported their hearing was worse, whereas eight patients said their hearing had deteriorated and eight said they had tinnitus .

We already know that viruses such as measles, mumps and meningitis can cause hearing loss, and coronaviruses can damage the nerves that carry information to and from the brain, Kevin Munro, a researcher and professor of audiology at the University of Manchester, said.

It is possible, in theory, that COVID-19 could cause problems with parts of the auditory system including the middle ear or cochlea, he said in a university news release.

According to Munro, conditions like auditory neuropathy, a hearing problem in which the cochlea is functioning but transmission along the auditory nerve to the brain is impaired, could make it hard to hear over background noise. Auditory neuropathy is also linked to Guillain-Barre syndrome, a condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves, which has been linked with COVID-19.

The researchers, however, noted that more work is required to exactly understand how the SARS-CoV-2 virus could affect hearing.

What Are The Stages Of Hair Growth

There are three main stages of hair growth:

  • Anagen: This is the growth phase in which the hair follicle grows.

  • Catagen: This is the transition phase where the hair follicle stops growing.

  • Telogen: This is the resting phase where the hair stays for 2 to 3 months until it falls out. About 10% to 15% of your hair is in the telogen phase at any given time.

  • Telogen effluvium occurs when hair follicles are pushed into the telogen phase earlier than normal. In 2 to 3 months after the stressful event, these hairs will start falling out.
