The federal government introduced some new measures to assist those that have had to stop working or have been laid off.

Canada Emergency Response Benefit : CERB provided a taxable benefit of $2,000 per month, for up to 28 weeks to qualifying individuals workers who lose their income as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic or earn less than $1,000 in a 4 week period. CERB was discontinued on Sep 26th, 2020 to be replaced with CRB.

Canada Recovery Benefit : CRB was put into effect on Sep 27th, 2020 and has similar eligibility criteria as CERB. Although it is a taxable benefit, CRA deducts 10% taxes at source which you can claim as a refundable credit on your tax return.

When you have a decrease in your income, this means that your taxable income is going down. Your taxable income is what determines what rate of tax is used to calculate how much tax you owe. Less employment income will mean less taxable income, and that will be indicated on your T4 slip. If you apply for CERB or CRB, the benefit will be added to your income increasing your tax liability. The CERB and CRB income will be reported on a T4A slip. CRA will withhold 10% taxes from your CRB earnings and none from your CERB, but this does not cover the first federal and provincial tax bracket. What Are The Tax Consequences Of An Involuntary Conversion

IRC Section 1033 applies in cases where property is compulsorily or involuntarily converted. Due to new guidance released from FEMA at the direction of the White House, Opening and Operating activities going back all the way to the beginning of the pandemic are now eligible for for reimbursement through FEMA Public Assistance.

The following activities are eligible for FEMA PA starting from January 20, 2020: medical care such as clinical care for COVID patients, vaccination operations, and alternate care sites, as well as testing sites. Certain opening and operating activities are also eligible to include purchase of personal protective equipment, cleaning and disinfection of facilities, screening and temperature checks, as well as the purchase and installation of physical barriers. Mass Care activities are also eligible to include non congregate sheltering and emergency feeding subject to state executive orders allowing for the activity.

The following activities are NOT eligible for FEMA Public Assistance, regardless of when the activity took place: contact tracing and virtual working operations.

Disaster relief payments permitted under Section 139 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code offer employers a flexible and potentially tax-free method to reimburse employees for certain qualifying expenses incurred as a result of COVID-19. If I redo without the Covid provision, it seems ok but I pay a lot of tax of course.

    If you rolled the RMD back then it is NOT a COVID related distribution, it is a simple rollover. Delete and re-enter and answer the RMD question that “none of this distribution was a RMD” or “RMD not required”, then say you “moved” the money and choose that it was all rolled over . That will put the amount on 1040 line 4a with the word “ROLLOVER” next to it.

    Line 4b indicates an IRA. Did you take an IRA distributing and want to spread the tax over 3 years?

    Are you paying it back?

    Exactly what is incorrect?

    Do you have more then 1 1099-R? Delete that 1099-R and make sure that 1040 line 4 is empty.

    What is different on the 2nd 1099-R? What is the code in box 7? Is it for the same spouse?
