Is Dizziness A Symptom Of Covid

Omicron Symptom: ‘lightheadedness’ Could Be A Sign You Have Covid

Chest Pain, Palpitations, Dizziness, and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome after COVID-19
  • Dizziness can be a sign that someone has contracted COVID-19
  • The virus-induced symptom was described as similar to experiencing vertigo or lightheadedness
  • People who experience post-COVID-19 dizziness are urged to contact their doctors or medical professionals

People who are experiencing dizziness may have contracted COVID-19, according to health officials.

Dizziness, along with back pain, is a lesser-known symptom of omicron, Mirror U.K. reported.

“Many studies have reported that COVID can cause dizziness during the acute phase of the infection, during recovery or as part of Long COVID symptoms,” the U.K.’s National Health Service said in its COVID-19 recovery guide.

The NHS described the virus-induced dizziness as “a sensation of spinning or an altered sense of motion often called vertigo” and lightheadedness that was similar to “a feeling as if you might faint.”

Both vertigo and lightheadedness can make people “feel slightly off-balance,” according to the agency.

The former, which is the feeling that a person or everything around them is spinning, is “often” seen in viral infections because a person is either “weaker and run down or because the virus has affected the vestibular system – the link between your inner ear and your brain,” the NHS explained.

A person may have an affected vestibular system if they get dizzy from moving their head, seeing lots of movement in front of their eyes or changing positions quickly, according to the health agency.

  • Chest pain

What Are The Main Symptoms Of Covid

Again, vertigo and dizziness aren’t on the CDC’s symptom list, nor does the World Health Organization include vertigo or dizziness in their symptoms checker. These are the signs the CDC currently calls out they typically show up 2-14 days after exposure to COVID.

  • Fever or chills
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

“This list does not include all possible symptoms,” the CDC notes, adding that they plan to update the symptoms as the organization learns more about COVID-19.

Dizziness Vertigo And Tinnitus In Long Covid Patients

In this cohort of 1,082 Long COVID patients, neurotological symptoms were common, with 60% suffering from some degree of vertigo or dizziness and 30% reporting tinnitus . Two hundred sixty six participants reported suffering both from tinnitus and vertigo or dizziness and 275 participants showed neither of the symptoms. The survey was taken an average of 43.2 weeks ± 23.4 weeks after the first symptoms of the SARS-CoV-2 infection. The self-reported severity of symptoms was assessed with a scale of 1 to 10 . Table 3 shows the results of the self-assessment of symptom severity for tinnitus as well as dizziness or vertigo. Three hundred thirty two patients reported tinnitus with a mean severity of 4.8 and a standard deviation of 3.0. Milder symptom severity was more common for tinnitus, but 23% of patients with tinnitus rated their symptoms as very severe . Albeit twice as prevalent in this cohort compared to tinnitus, dizziness and vertigo scores showed a similar severity distribution. The mean self-reported severity for vertigo or dizziness was 4.6 ± 2.7 and 20% of patients with vertigo or dizziness assessed their symptom severity as 8 or higher on the scale from 1 to 10 .

Exercises To Help With Your Vertigo

Here are some exercises that may help your recovery.

Start by performing these exercises once a day in the evening. After they feel ok, repeat the exercises again earlier in the day. Ideally, these exercises should be completed five times a day.

All of the following exercises should be performed for 30 seconds each:

      • Slow controlled eye movements with the head staying still
      • Slow controlled head movements with the eyes staying fixed on a target
      • Slow controlled eyes and head moving together
      • Slow controlled eyes and head moving in opposite directions

Have something stable to hold onto if needed for the following exercises:

      • Stand with your feet together
      • Stand with one foot in front of the other, touching heel to toe
      • Stand on one leg
      • Stand on the other leg

If you find these exercises too easy with your eyes open, repeat these exercises with your eyes closed.

Pace, Plan and Prioritise: Over exertion can make lightheadedness worse so it is important to pace, plan and prioritise your daily activities.

If you have lightheadedness on standing:

Vertigo Dizziness And Nausea As Post

Manchester researchers also warn that vertigo and dizziness can continue even after the long-awaited negative swab. Kevin Munro, one of the authors of the study, acknowledges that âin some cases, patients report that symptoms persist after negativization. Others point out that they have decreased but are still present, but there are still many unknowns about it â. Indeed, Munro insists that the investigation should be broadened and hearing tests be conducted. Furthermore, the researchers acknowledge that it is unclear whether hearing problems are directly attributed to the virus or to other factors, such as intensive care treatments provided to patients with the most aggressive forms.

What Is Vertigo Exactly

Vertigo is a sensation that either you or your environment is spinning uncontrollably, making you feel dizzy and disoriented. There are two types: peripheral vertigo and central vertigo.

Peripheral vertigo is the result of an inner ear problem, which plays a role in controlling balance. Typically, this kind of vertigo is the result of certain medications and head injuries.

Central vertigo is often caused by a problem in the brain’s cerebellum or the brain stem, which sends messages between the cerebellum and the spinal cord. Central vertigo could be triggered by a stroke, migraine, and other causes.

Dizziness And Nausea After Covid

Dizziness is now considered as a common Covid-19 side effect. However, it is still not clear nor confirmed that dizziness, vertigo and nausea episodes after vaccine shot are directly related to the administration.

In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , dizziness following COVID-19 vaccination can occasionally be a symptom of an allergic reaction, but this is most common in the first 15 to 30 minutes of vaccination. At the same time, vertigo can be also an anxiety-related response, which often occur after many different vaccines.

Rates For Vaccinated And Unvaccinated

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that people who are unvaccinated are at a much greater risk than those who are fully vaccinated to test positive or die from Covid-19. These charts compare age-adjusted average daily case and death rates for vaccinated and unvaccinated people in New York City and the 26 states that provide this data.

If I Tested Positive For Covid

The short answer is likely, yes, said Dr. Sanghavi, adding that there were a significant number of patients who were initially asymptomatic but then they subsequently developed symptoms, which are particular to COVID long haulers or long COVID.

And thats why COVID-19 is a very intriguing disease. It’s not just a simple virus affecting the body, there are immune and inflammatory mechanisms which affect the patient’s body, he added. Additionally, the patient may be initially asymptomatic, but subsequently develops symptoms like anxiety, depression, fatigue and so on.

What To Do If You Have Vertigo Or Dizziness

Vertigo and dizziness are considered to be pretty complex symptoms in medicine, says Dr. Bhuyan. So treatment depends on the type you’re experiencing.

“Some vertigo can be resolved without treatment at all,” Robert Quigley, MD, an immunologist and senior vice president and global medical director of travel health company International SOS, tells Health. “However, if vertigo is caused by an underlying problem, it might be treated through antibiotics, over-the-counter medicine, or even surgery per the direction of your health care provider.”

If your dizziness or vertigo can’t be explained by a head injury or other more typical cause, consider checking in with your doctor for a COVID test, just to play it safe.

Limitations And Future Prospects

This study has several limitations. First, it is based on patient reports during the telephone consultation and not on objective clinical examinations. Furthermore, some patients might have omitted or emphasized symptoms, have taken medications without reporting it to physicians, or have had concomitant occult disorders. Another important limitation of the study is the short evaluation period, limited only to days of SARSCoV2 nasopharyngeal swab positivity, with no subsequent follow-up. Further studies on patients examined directly at the hospital are necessary to confirm our findings. A possible future development of this research could involve the clinical evaluation of the long-term consequences of COVID-19 on the vestibular system.

Cough And Shortness Of Breath

7 Signs COVID

Other more prevalent symptoms that have been reported include cough and shortness of breath. Cough is one of the most prevalent symptoms along with fever. Both dry and productive coughs have been described in the literature. Shortness of breath was more frequently reported in hospitalized patients and associated with more severe disease. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis found shortness of breath present amongst 44% of people with severe disease and 6% of people with non-severe disease.

What Helps With Treating Dizziness

Whether or not its due to COVID-19, follow the steps below to help to ease the symptoms of dizziness or vertigo:

  • Sit or lie down. Stop what youre doing and lie down. You can also sit on a chair with your head positioned between your knees. While this last method is beneficial for dizziness, it may make vertigo worse, so be sure to take it slow.
  • Move carefully. Dizziness or vertigo can lead to falls. If you must move around, do so slowly and carefully. Use support in the form of a walking stick or cane, if possible.
  • Hydrate.Dehydration can make your symptoms worse, so try to drink some water as you recover.
  • Avoid some activities. Dont drive or operate other types of heavy machinery until your symptoms have passed.
  • Rest up. Getting a good amount of rest may help ease your symptoms, particularly if theyre due to an infection.

Research Studies Have Outlined A Variety Of Symptoms That Could Indicate You Have Coronavirus

GettyMedical workers assist people standing in line at NYC Health + Hospitals/Gotham Health, Gouverneur waiting to be tested for the coronavirus on April 24, 2020, in New York City.

Heres a roundup of research studies into how coronavirus unfolds in some patients. These studies did not highlight dizziness as a symptom.

Characteristics and Outcomes of 21 Critically Ill Patients With COVID-19 in Washington State

This study found that comorbidities were identified in 86% of cases, with chronic kidney disease and congestive heart failure being the most common. Initial symptoms included shortness of breath , fever , and cough . The mean onset of symptoms before going to the hospital was 3.5 days, and 81% of patients were admitted to the ICU less than 24 hours after hospital admission.

Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of 99 cases of 2019 novel coronavirus pneumonia in Wuhan, China: a descriptive study.

This study found that 51% of patients had chronic diseases. These symptoms were noted:

Patients had clinical manifestations of fever , cough , shortness of breath , muscle ache , confusion , headache , sore throat , rhinorrhoea , chest pain , diarrhoea , and nausea and vomiting 17 patients developed acute respiratory distress syndrome and, among them, 11 patients worsened in a short period of time and died of multiple organ failure.

Is Dizziness And Vertigo A Symptom Of Covid

Most cases of dizziness associated with COVID-19 seem to be related to central nervous system involvement . A study from three special care centers for COVID-19 in Wuhan, China showed over a third of patients exhibited abnormal neurological symptoms. They found that 17% of patients reported dizziness and 8% reported impaired consciousness. Out of this same data set, 62% had a fever and 50 % had a cough. This would suggest that while fever and cough are the most common symptoms associated with this virus, abnormal nervous system impairments are relatively common and dizziness is the most commonly reported nervous system abnormality.

Another study from Tongji Hospital in Wuhan, China found that 8% of patients with confirmed COVID-19 reported dizziness symptoms. Of those patients reporting dizziness only half recovered from the virus.

It is important to note that both of these studies were performed in special treatment facilities for patients hospitalized with known COVID-19. This does not account for those in the population that may have had mild or no symptoms at all. Due to these factors, it is likely that this data more closely reflects those with more severe cases of COVID-19.

Many Studies Have Suggested A Covid

Researchers find COVID-19 can infect inner ear, links to hearing issues

While the Queen has said Covid-19 left her feeling tired and exhausted, some have cited symptoms of dizziness relating to the virus.

According to the NHS website, many studies have reported that coronavirus can cause dizziness during the acute phase of the infection, during recovery or as part of long Covid symptoms.

Dizziness can be a sensation of spinning or an altered sense of motion which is often called vertigo, the NHS adds. Both can make you feel somewhat off balance.

Why Feeling Really Dizzy Could Be A Sign Of Covid

Feeling dizzy or experiencing vertigo in any situation can be a bit concerning, because theres a long list of causes that can spur the unsettling feeling. Vertigo is a condition that can make it feel like you or your surroundings are spinning, sometimes leading to a loss of balance, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

A sudden drop in blood pressure, dehydration, getting up too quickly, certain medications, inner ear issues, or motion sickness are all common causes of dizziness. But struggling with an unusual symptom during the coronavirus pandemic might make you wonder if it could be related to COVID-19.

Currently, neither the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention nor the World Health Organization list dizziness or vertigo as a symptom of COVID-19. But the CDC does note that its list doesnt include all possible symptoms.

Heres everything doctors know about the link between dizziness, vertigo, and COVID-19, and what you should do if youre suddenly feeling dizzy.

Can Vertigo And Dizziness Be Symptoms Of Covid

The association between Coronavirus infection and vertigo and dizziness problems was revealed in a study conducted by the University of Manchester and the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre. The results of the research were published in the “International Journal of Audiology” and concluded that the prevalence of dizziness in patients with Covid-19 is 7.2%. The same study indicates that 7.6% of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 suffer from hearing loss and 14.8% suffer from tinnitus.

Are Dizziness And Vertigo Covid

Prevention reports on whether dizziness and vertigo are symptoms of COVID-19. While simply feeling dizzy doesnt automatically mean you have COVID-19, especially if you have no other symptoms, its worth talking to your doctor if the feeling persists or you start experiencing a loss of balance, says John Sellick, DO, professor of medicine in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. We see dizziness with many other infections and illnesses, he says. But since theres so much COVID-19 circulating, it may be worth exploring.
