Is It Safe To Fly During Covid

Does Using The Aircraft’s Toilet Increase The Risk Of Exposure

Is it Safe to Fly During the Coronavirus Pandemic? I NOVA I PBS

Much of this depends on passengers’ hygiene. The aircrafts lavatory is ventilated, but it’s worth keeping in mind that you dont know the hygiene of the previous occupant, including whether they wore a face mask, said Ulrichs. If another passenger took off their face mask while in the lavatory, more aerosolized droplets have the potential to reach you. So experts urged wearing face masks when using the toilet.

A case study published in November 2020 found that one passenger on board an evacuation flight from Milan, Italy, to Incheon, South Korea, may have been infected while using the lavatory. Researchers found that six asymptomatic passengers had COVID-19 while onboard. The passenger who became infected while likely in the lavatory reported that she wore an N95 respirator the entire flight except while using the toilet.

Avoid the lavatory if you can, but use face masks if you must, say experts

There are surfaces within the lavatory, beyond the toilet itself, that may have been touched by other passengers, including the water tap and door latch, for example. “It’s unlikely, but possible, that the particles could get on your hands and then you could touch your face. So it’s also important to wash your hands. Using disinfectants is a good extra measure, avoid touching one’s face, and be mindful of cleaning after being in the bathroom so you can take measures that significantly reduce your risk,” Marcus said.

Risk While Flying Is Low

During air travel, the risk of COVID-19 is lower than from an office building, classroom, supermarket or commuter train, says the JAMA Patient Page, Risk of COVID-19 During Air Travel, co-written by Dr. Pombal.

To date, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 transmission to airline passengers around the world is small, said Dr. Pombal, adding that there have been only about 60 cases over a period in 2020 during which a total of over 1.2 billion passengers have travelled by air.

The odds of being on a plane with a person with actively transmissible COVIDboth positive and in the window where they are significantly shedding as identified by the researchare quite low, said Drs. Shoor and Ortega. However, the best portion of the discussions and agreements revolve around the flexibility of response because one size doesnt fit all.

To match that, discussions have set forth a pattern of communication to express and share those similarities and differences as each flight has a takeoff and a landing location with different authorities, they said.

As this progresses, we will see areas ramp up and others go away, so you have to reevaluate the way you think about how you travel, said Dr. Shoor.

There Are Different Opinions On When Pregnant Women Should Stop Flying

Minkin notes that “in general, most OBs don’t want you traveling too far afield after about 30 weeks gestation,” but the cutoff time changes depending on who you talk to and what airline you’re flying.

You can fly free and easy on both American and United Airlines until your 36th week of pregnancy , while Air France, which I’m flying on my next trip, recommends that you “avoid travel starting from week 37 of your pregnancy.”

What About Going Through Security And Boarding

Typically, airport security involves long lines in front of checkpoints and lots of passing back and forth of passengers belongings. Updated security procedures from the Transport Security Administration will be rolled out nationwide by mid-June, though some are in place already. If they don’t have them in place, expect airports to have visual reminders of appropriate spacing on checkpoint floors and staggered lanes to facilitate social distancing. Passengers wont be required to hand their boarding pass to the security agent instead, they’ll place it on the reader themselves then hold it up for the agent to inspect.

All TSA officers will wear face masks and gloves, and passengers will be reminded to separate food, liquids, and electronics in the bins. They will also be asked to place belts, wallets, keys, and phones directly into their carry-on bags instead of into the bins, which will reduce touch points during the screening process. After you move through security, disinfect personal items like your ID and phone.

Social distancing will be harder during the boarding process, when your flight is in the air, and while deplaning, says Dr. Beamer. If you are able to fly with an airline that is spacing passengers that would be better, she advises. If not, then try to get a window seat and stay put. This will expose you to a lot less people than if you were in an aisle seat or walking up and down the aisle.

Do I Still Need To Take Precautions If I’m Vaccinated

Flying Safely During COVID

The CDC in early April to say that people who are fully vaccinated can travel at a low risk to themselves noting that a person is only considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving the last recommended dose of vaccine.

Vigilance is also necessary as variants continue to emerge and spread. In New Zealand, an airport worker became infected with the UK variant while cleaning a plane in Auckland. The employee was fully vaccinated, New Zealand officials said.

Experts recommend remaining vigilant the entire journey, including on transport to the airport, during check-in, and while at baggage claim

The Pros And Cons Of Car Travel

When it comes to driving, the obvious advantage is that you can control who gets into the vehicle with you. But the CDC warns there could be other unforeseen risks. Making stops along the way for gas, food, or bathroom breaks can put you and your traveling companions in close contact with other people and surfaces, the agency notes. That said, your own car can provide much more protection than public forms of transportation, assuming you are traveling with family members or others who have been screened or vetted.

But what if its not your car? In the case of rental vehicles, major firms such as Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz have all pledged enhanced cleaning and social distancing upon check-in. Enterprise details 21 separate automotive parts that are sanitized, from mirrors to cupholders.

Eating And Drinking On The Plane

Your child is allowed to take their face mask off for a brief time to have a drink or snack on the flight, so you can pack drinks and snacks as you always would.

However, the idea is that snack time is short. Southwest Airlines website states that, we expect these instances to be very brief, and customers should put their face covering back on as soon as possible.

Also know that while many airlines have resumed some level of snack and meal service, it is still often reduced from previous levels, so your best bet is to board the plane ready to be self-sufficient in meeting your kids drinking and snacking needs. For example, Southwest Airlines has resumed water service but does not have juice or other drinks on offer at this time.

How Safe Is Air Travel

MIT Medical answers your COVID-19 questions. Got a question about COVID-19? Send it to us at , and well do our best to provide an answer.

Im anxious to visit my parents, but Im wondering how safe it is to fly right now. With all the talk about the virus being airborne, how dangerous is the re-circulated air in the cabin? Is it worth booking with an airline that blocks middle seats? And are there other risks Im not even considering?

At first thought, a narrow metal tube in which strangers are crammed together for hours might seem like a flying petri dish, especially during a pandemic. The reality is a bit more nuanced. While there are risks associated with flying, it may be safer than you think.

For starters, the air quality on a commercial airliner is actually quite high, with the air volume in the cabin being completely refreshed every two to four minutes. Air flows into the cabin vertically it enters from overhead vents and is sent downward in a circular motion, exiting at floor level. Once air leaves the cabin, about half is dumped outside, and the rest is sent through HEPA filters, similar to those used in hospitals, before being mixed with fresh outside air and entering the cabin again.

And that was without masks.

If You Do Travel During The Pandemic Plan Ahead To Keep Everyone Safe

Its OK if you want or need to travel, but we recommend being smart and developing a game plan beforehand to keep yourself and those you love safe.

Despite still being in the midst of a pandemic, most of the things that we were doing before can still be done safely. It really is as simple as keeping our distance from others, keeping our hands clean and covering the parts of our body where respiratory droplets could enter or exit with a mask, says Dr. Khabbaza.

White House Mandates Pfizer Vaccines For Millions Of Citizens Before The Fda Clinical Or Safety Reviews Have Been Made Public

Speaking of vaccinated, have you already had two doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and are you at least 14 days past the last dose? If so, congratulations, give yourself a tiara, a crown, or a hot dog hat. You are fully vaccinated and much less likely to get severe Covid-19. However, if you are not fully vaccinated, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends delaying travel until you arefully vaccinated, because travel increases your chance of getting and spreading Covid-19.

Just because you are fully vaccinated doesnt mean that you should say, time to fly everywhere right now though. Remember being vaccinated can protect you against getting severe Covid-19 but its protection is not 100%. It is not a superpower like invulnerability. Vaccination is not an impenetrable force field. You still have a chance of being infected with the virus, getting more severe Covid-19, and spreading the virus to others, albeit your chances are likely much lower. So even if you are fully vaccinated and must travel now, move on to the next question.

Question 3: Is there any chance that you or your travel companions may be carrying the Covid-19 coronavirus?

Question 4: What precautions is the airline taking?

Many airlines are no longer blocking out the middle seats.

Question 5: How else might you be able to reduce your risk of getting Covid-19?

Question 6: Whats your destination?

Question 7: Whats the risk of not flying?

Americans Advised To Be Cautious When Traveling To Quintana Roo

Following a recent shooting at the Xcaret Hotel in Playa del Carmen, which resulted in the death of two Canadian citizens, the U.S. Consulate General in Merida, Yucatan urged Americans to exercise increased caution when traveling to the neighboring Quintana Roo state.

Destinations in Quintana Roo include the aforementioned Cancun and Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Chetumal and Cozumel, all extremely popular among visitors.

According to the U.S. outpost in Merida, criminal acts and violence may occur throughout the state, including in areas frequented by U.S. citizens.

Although those murdered were reportedly engaged in criminal activities, the fact that the shooting took place within a luxury hotel indicates there is renewed gang presence along the coast, even inside tourist zones.

The incident has prompted the United States to ask its citizens to monitor the local news for updates, avoid crowds, be aware of their surroundings, and review personal security plans, among other actions.

The shooting itself came as a shock to the local community and vacationers alike, as the Xcaret Hotel is particularly favored by sunseekers, offering access to sandy beaches and a variety of pools and spas in its vicinity.

If Youre Unwell Dont Travel

COVID-19 appears to have an incubation period of at least 14 days, unlike regular flu which is 2 days. An increasing number of international airports are also conducting temperature checks for arriving, departing and transiting passengers, so theres the chance that you could be denied boarding for having a fever unrelated to COVID-19. So protect yourself, and other travelers, by not flying when youre sick.

Dont Bring Too Many People Along For The Ride

When it comes to passengers, the CDC recommends limiting the number of people in your vehicle if possible. And since you all cant be six feet apart, it doesnt hurt to wear masks in the car, especially if youre traveling with someone who is at high risk for COVID-19. Dr. Khabbaza also recommends wearing a mask in the car especially if youre traveling with someone who is outside of your immediate circle.

Before stopping for gas or food, designate a runner for travel-related tasks. Have one or two people who arent at high risk go in to grab snacks or buy gas if you dont want to pay at the pump. Just make sure your designated runners mask up and clean their hands thoroughly before getting back in the car. And as youre filling up, avoid scrolling through your phone while pumping gas to minimize the risk of any contamination.

As youre cruising to your destination, keep the windows open if possible to let fresh air in and boost ventilation. If youre headed to a warmer area and air conditioning is a must, set the air ventilation or air conditioning to non-recirculation mode.

International Travel And Covid

  • International travel is also considered safe for vaccinated Americans. However, it may pose more of a risk than domestic travel, so you’ll still want to follow all recommended safety precautions. Fully vaccinated people don’t need to get tested before leaving the U.S. unless your destination requires it unvaccinated people should get tested one to three days before their trip.
  • In December 2021, the CDC changed their testing guidance for entering the U.S. Now all air travelers “must show a negative COVID-19 test taken no more than one day before travel to the United States”regardless of vaccination status, says the organization. This rule applies to those over 2 years old.
  • It’s also recommended that you get a COVID-19 test three to five days after traveland that goes for all travelers, vaccinated or not. Fully vaccinated travelers can skip self-quarantining after returning to the U.S.
  • If you’re not vaccinated, the CDC recommends delaying international travel. If you must travel, quarantine for a full seven days after, even if you test negative at three-five days. If you forgo this test, quarantine for a full 10 days.

Note that for any travel, whether domestic or international, vaccinated parents with unvaccinated kids may want to proceed with caution and weigh the risks of traveling before booking a trip. Also check state, local, airline, and destination travel restrictions before booking your trip to make sure there’s nothing else you’ll need to do.
