With The Rising Number Of Daily Cases The Omicron Threat Is High Right Now But The Good News Is None Of The Cases Detected In India Required Emergency Hospitalisation Ventilation Or Any Other Serious Kind Of Health Treatment

Written by Satata Karmakar | Updated : January 7, 2022 10:49 AM IST

The Omicron variant or B.1.1.529 which has been designated as a variant of concern by the World Health Organization has been spreading faster across the countries. On November 24, 2021, a few samples collected from the COVID infected patients in South Africa showed the emergence of a new strain of SARS-CoV2 virus causing COVID-19, with several worrisome mutations in its spike protein. Spike protein helps the virus to bind better with the cells present in the organs of the human body. Thus, Omicron also has a better transmissibility rate compared to the other strains and can also infect fully immunised individuals. In its latest report, the who mentioned that the new variant is already present in over 110 countries including India, UK, US, and Europe.

Nausea Loss Of Appetite May Be New Symptoms Of Omicron

Research from an Imperial College London study and Scottish paper Early Pandemic Evaluation and Enhanced Surveillance of Covid-19, states that people with Omicron are 15 to 20 per cent less likely to need hospital treatment.

While the Omicron variant is considered to be “mild”, the new symptoms include nausea and loss of appetite, according to a Zoe Covid app study.

According to the UK’s NHS, the symptoms of coronavirus generally include “a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste”, the Daily Express reported.

However, some people have had nausea and a loss of appetite – symptoms that are not usually associated with Covid.

    Nhs Adds Nine New Covid

Feeling tired, nauseous, suffering a loss of appetite and headaches are now among the 12 official symptoms of coronavirus in the UK

Nine signs of illness have now been added to the NHS’ list of official Covid-19 symptoms.

The NHS updated its list of coronavirus symptoms in adults on April 1. On the same day, England switched to its “living with Covid” strategy and ended free coronavirus testing for all.

Previously, the NHS said there were three main symptoms of Covid a fever, a new and persistent cough, and a loss of change in taste or smell. Now, the health service recognises nine more symptoms, including feeling tired, headaches, a sore throat and feeling nauseous.

The NHS site adds: The symptoms are very similar to symptoms of other illnesses, such as colds and flu.

The update came as Covid-19 infection levels hit a record high in the UK on Friday, the first day of England’s “living with Covid” plan. The World Health Organisation the USA’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has had a longer symptom list than the NHS for some time. But the UK’s NHS list of Covid symptoms stayed the same, with just three symtoms, for almost two years. The Government’s chief medical officer will have signed off the updated list complete with the nine new symptoms, Press Association reports.

Gastrointestinal issues were linked to COVID-19 in an analysis of patients at three Chinese hospitals, according to WebMD. The review “found that almost 1 in 5 had at least one gastrointestinal symptom, such as diarrhea, vomiting, or belly pain.”

Though these symptoms don’t necessarily mean that you have COVID-19, it’s best to use a separate bathroom until you confirm your status with a test. “Those with digestive symptoms were more likely to have a positive stool test for the coronavirus,” WebMD says. “It also took them longer to clear the virus from their bodies, compared to those without gastrointestinal symptoms.”

These Two Symptoms Might Be More Common With Breakthrough Infections

Milder gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea and loss of appetite might be indicative of a milder COVID case, which seems to be more common with breakthrough Omicron. Tim Spector, a professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London and head of the ZOE COVID Study App, said in a YouTube video that these two gastrointestinal symptoms appear more likely in infections among fully vaccinated and boosted individuals.

“Some of them had nausea , slight temperature, sore throat, and headache,” Spector said, referencing an outbreak within a group that had all gotten two or three shots.

The Surprising Omicron Symptoms That Can Appear When Youre Eating

OMICRON has been proven to be a milder strain of coronavirus, with most people suffering cold-like symptoms.

Experts have said that the three main signs of Omicron are a cough, headache and fatigue, but there is another surprising symptom that can appear when you’re eating.

Experts have said it may have a different set of symptoms to the older versions of the virus.

Data from the ZOE Covid Symptom Study has shone a light on the most common signs of the Omicron strain.

And there is a hint that some people could experience a previously lesser common problem – loss of appetite, the Mirror reported.

A string of hugely positive studies show Omicron IS milder than other strains, with the first official UK report revealing the risk of hospitalisation is 50 to 70 per cent lower than with Delta.

Covid booster jabs protect against Omicron and offer the best chance to get through the pandemic, health officials have repeatedly said.

Data From The Covid Symptom Study Has Revealed Six Distinct Types Of Covid

Analysis of data from the COVID Symptom Study app, led by researchers from Kingâs College London and the health technology company ZOE, reveals that there are six distinct âtypesâ of COVID-19, each distinguished by a particular cluster of symptoms. Moreover, the team found that these types differed in the severity of the disease and the need for respiratory support during hospitalisation.

The findings have major implications for clinical management of COVID-19, and could help doctors predict who is most at risk and likely to need hospital care in a second wave of coronavirus infections.

Launched in March in the UK and extended to the US and Sweden, the COVID Symptom Study app asks participants to log their health and any new potential symptoms of COVID-19 on a daily basis. With more than 4 million users, this represents the largest study of its kind in the world.

Although continuous cough, fever and loss of smell are usually highlighted as the three key symptoms of COVID-19, data gathered from app users shows that people can experience a wide range of different symptoms including headaches, muscle pains, fatigue, diarrhoea, confusion, loss of appetite, shortness of breath and more.* The progression and outcomes also vary significantly between people, ranging from mild flu-like symptoms or a simple rash to severe or fatal disease.

A new Omicron COVID symptom could first alert you to infection as you sit down for Christmas dinner.

The super-infectious strain is spreading at a rapid rate and hundreds of thousands more people will test positive over the holiday.

The good news is that a string of hugely positive studies show Omicron is milder than other strains, with the first official UK report revealing the risk of hospitalization is 50 to 70 percent lower than with Delta.

COVID booster jabs protect against Omicron and offer the best chance to get through the pandemic, health officials have repeatedly said.

As governments race to get as many jabs in arms as fast as possible, experts are learning more about the new COVID strain every day.

The Flu: The Importance Of Vaccination

Most children with the flu gradually get better by staying home, drinking plenty of liquids, and resting. For some, their doctor might prescribe them an antiviral prescription to reduce their symptoms and help them heal faster.

However, some children may become ill enough to require treatment in the hospital.

Your pediatrician or family doctor can check if your child has the flu by doing a test that looks for the flu virus, Dr. Stovall says. Again, thats why a flu vaccination is so important. Unlike with COVID-19, which doesnt have a vaccine yet, a flu vaccine can help protect your child from severe influenza. The vaccine may completely prevent influenza infection in some people, but it is most protective against severe disease. Children under age 5 are at higher risk of influenza complications than older children.

    Taste Changes During Illness

Some people experience a change in taste and smell when recovering from COVID-19.

People have experienced taste changes in different ways.

    This can include:

    • complete loss of taste and smell for a number of weeks
    • a bland taste from foods
    • metallic or salty taste from foods

Tips to help manage taste changes

    • Eating a variety of hot or cold foods, or food of different textures may bring some sensory enjoyment even if taste is reduced.
    • Adding additional salt, butter, cream may make food taste nicer if flavour is lacking.
    • If you are cooking for someone who is ill, the presentation of food is important to make as appetising as possible.

Food is as important as medicine. Even if food does not taste the same, you should eat enough nourishing foods to help your recovery.

There Are Three Types Of Long Covid

Long COVID can be broken down into three categories, Dr. Sanghavi explained. COVID-19 itself has direct cell damage because of the virus and this can cause lingering symptoms.

This means that people with COVID-19 do not recover completely and have ongoing symptoms because of direct cell damage from the virus, he said. Thats the first category.

The second category of long COVID is when a persons symptoms are related to chronic hospitalization, said Dr. Sanghavi. This is when someone is in the hospital, ICU, bed bound for weeks.

There is inherent muscle weakness. There is inherent cognitive brain dysfunction. There is inherent psychosocial stress causing post-traumatic stress disorder-like syndrome, which we call post-ICU care syndrome, he added. That is from chronic hospitalization.

In a third category are those cases in which symptoms appear after recovery.

With COVID itself you see a variety of symptomsa 30-year-old dying or a 70-year-old essentially being unscathed and symptomatic.

Thats because there are various patient factors at play, reflecting the interplay with the immune system of a person, and then the impact that both those things have on the body, he said. These symptoms that linger on are produced after the recovery because of this interplay between inflammatory markers and the immune system.

The Nhs Is Warning People To Look Out For Nine New Signs Of Covid Including Symptoms Such As Feeling Tired And A Loss Of Appetite

The official list of Covid symptoms has been expanded to include nine new signs of illness.

The extension of the symptoms list to include ailments such as sore throat, fatigue and headache could help to reduce infections, one expert said.

News that the symptoms list has been updated emerged just days after the Government ended the offer of free universal Covid tests.

It comes as Covid infection levels have hit a record high in the UK, with almost five million people estimated to be currently infected.

Downing Street defended axing free tests on Monday, saying lateral flow spending was simply unsustainable.

Prime Minister Boris Johnsons official spokesman said: I think we need to look at where we are in the course of this pandemic.

We know there is relatively high prevalence of Covid at the moment but, because of vaccines, because of therapeutics and other approaches, we are not seeing it have the knock-on impact when it comes to requiring the most intensive hospital treatment.

At the same time the provision of free tests was costing taxpayers £2 billion a month and that is simply unsustainable.

The spokesman said ministers expect the public to use their good judgment now on whether to go out if they have coronavirus-like symptoms.

The new symptoms have been added to the NHS website, along with the three traditional symptoms of a fever, a new and persistent cough, and a loss or change in taste or smell.

    When Do Symptoms Start Showing

Children who have COVID-19 or the flu may not have any symptoms , but they can still spread the viruses. Both infections can also cause mild-to-severe symptoms.

Flu symptoms show up about 1 to 4 days after infection . COVID-19 symptoms appear about 2 to 14 days after infection, but often can start within 4-5 days after exposure to a sick person.

    Vaccine Effectiveness & Omicron

Expert studies have shown that the risk of severe illness from Covid-19 is reduced by 90 percent or more among people who are fully vaccinated.

While there are breakthrough cases of Covid among people who are vaccinated, they are rare.

In the event of a breakthrough case, victims are highly unlikely to be hospitalized with severe or deadly symptoms from the virus.

Health officials have advised that the Omicron variant is more infectious and could lead to further breakthrough cases.

Yet the spread can be offset by all vaccinated Americans receiving a booster shot.

Current vaccines are expected to protect against severe illness, hospitalizations, and deaths due to infection with the Omicron variant.

With other variants, like Delta, vaccines have remained effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalizations, and death.

Studies have also shown that side effects from the vaccine are extremely rare.

    What Are The Symptoms

    • New and continuous cough – coughing a lot for more than an hour, or having three or more coughing episodes in 24 hours
    • Fever – a temperature above 37.8C
    • Change in smell or taste – either you cannot taste or smell anything, or these senses are different to normal.

Public Health England says about 85% of people with Covid will have at least one of these symptoms.

People infected with new variants such as Delta may be more likely to have other symptoms, such as headache, sore throat or a runny nose, according to research from the Zoe Covid Study and an ONS survey.

If you have any symptoms you should get tested as soon as possible and not leave home for any other reason.

It takes five days on average from the moment you’re infected for symptoms to show.
