This is important because breathing air thats too cold and dry can aggravate your airways, which is why it can burn like hell to breathe outside in wintertime. So, even though mucus is kind of gross, it contributes a fair amount to your physical comfort.
Mucus is meant to keep you comfortable in another way too: As a vigilant guard on the front lines of your bodys biological defense system, Michael Benninger, M.D., chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Head and Neck Institute, tells SELF. Mucus traps foreign invaders that could make you ill, including viruses, bacteria, and allergens. Ideally, little hairlike projections called cilia then shuffle those invaders to the front of your nose so you sneeze them out, meaning they cant enter your lungs and make you sick.
Home Remedies For Congestion
Outside of medications, there are other home remedies you can try to clear up your chest congestion.
- Stay hydrated. Mucus is 90% water and can get thicker when youre dehydrated.
- Use a humidifier, face steamer, or vaporizer.
- Soothe your face with a warm, moist washcloth or breathe in with your face over a bowl of hot water.
- Try deep breathing and positional exercises.
- Try rinsing your sinuses with a nasal irrigation device or nasal spray.
- Prop yourself up when sleeping or lying down.

At baseline, you shouldnt really notice your mucus, says David Corry, M.D., professor of immunology, allergy, and rheumatology at Baylor College of Medicine. Still, under normal, healthy circumstances your mucus should be clear, Dr. Lippmann says. Worth noting, per Dr. Corry: Healthy mucus can also be white.
Your mucus can change color depending on whats happening with your health and even in your environment, though. Things like infections, nosebleeds, allergies, and environmental exposures such as tobacco use or heavy pollution can change the color of your mucus, Dr. Lippmann says.

Body aches or myalgia is another symptom that may last for months, if not years, after contracting COVID. “A British study says many coronavirus patients suffer symptoms such as breathlessness, excessive fatigue, and muscle aches for months after being treated at a hospital,” reports WebMD. “Three quarters of a group of patients who received care for coronavirus at Bristol’s Southmead Hospital were still suffering ongoing symptoms three months later,” according to a news release from the hospital. 35% of those in the China study had body aches.

How To Be Good To Your Nose And Sinuses
If you have recurring or continuing uncomfortable symptoms, the first and easiest thing you can do for nasal health is wash out your nose using sterile saline. Like any other problem with the body, keep it clean and it will work better, Shikowitz says. Circulate the saline through your nostrils to wash out thick secretions so your nose will be cleaner, function better, and less prone to infections.
Air conditioning and indoor heating systems can also be very drying, and the nose does not work well when it’s really dry. So if you suffer from nasal conditions, Shikowitz advises the use of a humidifier in the bedroom.
What Does Snot Color Say About Your Health
Snot color can tell you many things, including whether you have allergies, a nosebleed, a cold or a sinus infection. However, changing snot color is almost a bigger indicator that something is up with your health.
If your snot is changing color, you need to see what else is going on, Dr. Sindwani says. Its the idea that you were doing fine, nothing was bothering you and then something changed. Youll want to look more holistically at what else might have changed. Are you feeling unwell? Did you get a new pet or other significant change in your environment?
However, Dr. Sindwani notes that snot color or changes to snot color is just one sign of a potential health concern. The consistency of your snot could also be a warning sign. If its thicker, that could represent your hydration status, such as being behind in your fluid intake, or having too much dehydrating coffee or sodas, he says.
How much snot youre producing can also be telling. If its more copious, meaning more of it, that might be something thats important to note also, Dr. Sindwani says. That can reflect hydration and for some people, that may reflect an exposure to something that was irritating, like perfume or cigarette smoke. Or it could even represent allergies or an allergic exposure.

Mucus isnt stationary. In fact, mucus is always on the move around your body, in a predetermined pattern. It begins in the sinuses and then travels into your nose, down the back of the nose and throat, and then ends in the stomach.
Dr. Sindwani says if mucus did stay in one place, the bacteria within itcould cause infections.
Mucus traps bacteria, he notes, but then it gets pushed away into your stomach. The bacteria can be taken care of there, so it doesnt infect you or harm you in any way. If mucus were to sit around and be stagnant, the bacteria that are in it would continue to proliferate, because mucus is kind of a food for them. This overgrowth of bacteria could then get into your nasal and sinus tissues and cause an infection.
In addition to keeping potential infections at bay, mucus helps your nose function properly. For example, mucus traps chemicals called odorants, which represent different smells, and directs them to your smell receptors which live high up in the nose. That keeps your sense of smell in tip-top shape.
The nose also humidifies and warms the air we breathe with the help of mucus. Mucus mainly adds water or humidification to the air we breathe, so it doesnt dry out our passages or lungs, says Dr. Sindwani.
Why Am I Making So Much Mucus
Even when you’re healthy, your body is a mucus-making machine, churning out about 1 to 1.5 liters of the stuff every day. Most of that mucus trickles down your throat and you don’t even notice it.
However, there are times when you do notice your mucus — usually not because you’re producing more of it, but because its consistency has changed.
“Typically, the mucus changes character. It gets thicker,” Johns says. “When it has mass effect you feel it, and when you feel it, you want to hock.” Some people just naturally have thicker, stickier mucus than others.
It generally takes a bad cold, allergy, or contact with something irritating — like a plate of nuclear-hot Buffalo wings — to throw your body’s mucus production into overdrive.
For instance, during an allergic response to an offending trigger, such as pollen or ragweed, mast cells in your body squeeze out a substance called histamine, which triggers sneezing, itching, and nasal stuffiness. The tissue of the mucus membranes starts leaking fluid, and your nose begins to run.
Drinking milk may also make some people produce more mucus. Kao says that’s due to gustatory rhinitis, a reflex reaction that’s triggered by eating. Gustatory rhinitis is also why your nose runs when you eat hot peppers. Milk proteins cause the same type of response in some people. But although you may feel like you have more phlegm, you’re not going to worsen a cold by drinking a glass of milk, Johns says.

What Does Green Snot Mean
If your immune system kicks into high gear to fight infection, your snot may turn green and become especially thick. The color comes from dead white blood cells and other waste products.
But green snot isnt always a reason to run to your doctor. In fact, some sinus infections may be viral, not bacterial.

33% of those in the China study produced mucus of phlegm, and a runny nose and congestion are on the CDC’s list of symptoms. “The new coronavirus that causes COVID-19 doesn’t usually cause mucus in the chest,” reports WebMD. “But complications from the virus can include pneumonia, which does involve chest congestion.”
When To See A Doctor
Lets say you wake up in the morning and your face is hurting, you have a fever, your cheeks are swollen, and your snot is yellow or white. That may be the sign that you have not only a viral infection but a bacterial sinusitis, Shikowitz says. That particular type of infection may require antibiotics, so that’s an appropriate time to see your physician or go to an urgent care center.
If youre constantly plagued by congestion or allergies, you should get evaluated by an ENT physician, Shikowitz advises. Just having a good examination, looking at the anatomy of the nose, looking at the drainage path to the sinuses, can be very beneficial in determining the treatment plan into the future, he says.
