To see how far things have devolved in Saginaw, one needs only to spend time on the seventh floor of Covenant. There, in a slender hallway with a low ceiling, nurses buzz in and out of rooms. The floor is busy but not panicky, with the whirring and beeping of machines making up most of the soundtrack. Many of the sick are sedated and on ventilators, unable to speak with their doctors. Others are confused.
This illness is dehumanizing, said Dr. Amjad Nader, who cares for people in that unit. He added, Sometimes I dont see light in the eyes of my patients.
Many of the caregivers on that floor have become virus experts. They talk about the satisfaction of calling a patients spouse if the patient no longer needs a ventilator after weeks of treatment. They lament the frustration of having no cure. They grieve every time they lose a patient.
Ms. Klingenberg, the nurse, volunteered to work with coronavirus patients at the start of the pandemic and has passed up opportunities to take other assignments.
Mostly, its for my co-workers, she said. I dont want to quit on them. And somebody has to do it. And were apparently the people who have chosen to do it.
At other moments, she said, the trauma and the relentlessness of the pandemic wave after wave feel like too much.
Countries With Highest Number Of Covid
The coronavirus pandemic, the worst that the world is facing in a century, spread across the globe very fast, and affected millions. It started from China in December, and has so far devastated more than 200 countries. The total number of Covid-19 affected patients has crossed three million.
The virus has spread from United States to Europe, with Italy leading the European tally in terms of fatalities. In India, meanwhile, the number of coronavirus disease Covid-19 cases crossed the 29,000-mark on Tuesday.
Here is a list of 10 countries with most number of Covid-19 cases and fatalities:
The US has been hardest hit by the spread of Covid-19. It has recorded almost a million cases and the number of dead has surpassed 55,000, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. The countrys death toll is inching towards 58,000-mark – the number of US troops killed during the Vietnam War.
The European country has the second-highest number of Covid-19 cases in the world, at 2,29,422. The number of deaths in the country is above 23,000.
Italy is not far behind from Spain in number of Covid-19 cases. The country, known for its best medical facilities, has 1,99,414 positive cases and the second-highest number of coronavirus deaths at 26,977. Its Lombardy region has been the hardest hit.

Doctors And Nurses Are Living In A Constant Crisis As Covid Fills Hospitals
Hospitalizations across the country have increased 20 percent in two weeks, taxing already exhausted health care workers as the United States confronts the Omicron variant.

SAGINAW, Mich. On the top floor of the hospital, in the unit that houses the sickest Covid-19 patients, 13 of the 14 beds were occupied. In the one empty room, a person had just died.
Through surge after surge, caregivers in the unit at Covenant HealthCare in Saginaw, Mich., have helped ailing patients say goodbye to their relatives on video calls. The medical workers have cried in the dimly lit hallways. They have seen caseloads wane, only to watch beds fill up again. Mostly, they have learned to fear the worst.
You come back to work and you ask who died, said Bridget Klingenberg, an intensive care nurse at Covenant, where staff levels are so strained that the Defense Department recently sent reinforcements. I dont think people understand the toll that that takes unless youve actually done it.
Living in a constant crisis for 20 months-plus is a little overwhelming, said Dr. Matthew Deibel, the medical director for emergency care at Covenant, where patients must sometimes wait hours to be seen because of a shortage of beds and staff.
Who Has Vaccinated The Most
Of the 196 countries and territories administering vaccines and publishing rollout data, 67 are high-income nations, 103 are middle-income and 26 low-income.
The map below, using figures collated by Our World in Data – a collaboration between Oxford University and an educational charity – shows the total number of doses given per 100 people, mostly first doses.

Based on detailed case information reported to PHAC from provinces and territories, cases following vaccination were reported more frequently among females and those aged 60 years and older . This may be the result of higher vaccination coverage in Canada among females and those aged 60 years and older due to the prioritization of older age groups and healthcare workers as part of the vaccine rollout.
- : Detailed case information received by PHAC from provinces and territories, since December 14, 2020
- There are currently twelve jurisdictions reporting case-level vaccine history data to PHAC as part of the national COVID-19 dataset. A data cut-off of July 10, 2021 was used to account for any reporting delays associated with vaccine history information.
- *Cases with missing gender were excluded. Where available, gender data was used when gender data was unavailable, sex data was used. Reliable data on gender diverse respondents are unavailable due to small counts.

Europeans and their governments will be hoping that vaccines, developed in record time, as well as lockdowns will help to reduce infections. More than 30 countries have active inoculation programmes, which make use of three main vaccines, developed by Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, and AstraZeneca/Oxford University. So far 14m shots have been administered. Britain, which on December 8th was the first country in the world to begin vaccinations, has now given jabs to more than one person in 20.
Although vaccination programmes offer hope that life can return to normal, they remain nascent. In the meantime, to assess how European countries are coping with suppressing the virus, The Economist has assembled data on covid-19 cases and deaths for 39 countries, and for 173 sub-national areas for which data are available. We present the total number of deaths per 100,000 in the population. We also break down the infection and death rates for the past seven days to give a better sense of where the virus is most active.
In the charts below, we use the same presentation format as ones above, but for 12 selected sub-national areas. The shape of these curves is very similar to that of the national ones, yet there are important discrepancies. For example, after battling a severe outbreak of infections in the autumn, Britain’s North West is now in effect in its third wave of the pandemic.
Hospitalizations And Deaths To Date
We have detailed case report data on 99,853 cases, and hospitalization status for 65,597 of them:
- cases were hospitalized, of whom:
- were admitted to the ICU
- needed mechanical ventilation
The provinces and territories provided detailed case report forms for deaths related to COVID-19.

How Is The Disease Progressing Around The World
Larger countries tend to have higher numbers of both cases and deaths. But there are many other factors in play, such as the demographic profiles of the countries countries with ageing populations may be hit harder because the disease is more dangerous to older people. Countries that have imposed social distancing restrictions, as well as those with advanced vaccination campaigns, have managed to avoid some of the worst peaks recorded around the world.
Case rates the daily cases per million people in any country show how many European countries faced new highs in infection during last winter.
The disease has caused tens or hundreds of thousands of deaths in many countries, hitting the US, Brazil, India, Mexico and Russia with particular cruelty in terms of total deaths.
And while most countries experienced the first wave of infections in a similar fashion, albeit at different times, new variants are for now changing the way different areas are suffering from further waves.
Coronavirus Cases Are Up In Most States
Last week, Omicron accounted for 2.9 percent of cases across the country, up from 0.4 percent the previous week, according to projections released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Across New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, health authorities estimated that Omicron infections were already accounting for 13.1 percent of new cases.
In Minnesota, several hospital systems released a joint message saying that employees were demoralized and that your access to health care is being seriously threatened by the pandemic. In Rhode Island, Gov. Dan McKee wrote a letter to federal officials asking for staffing help, noting that hospitals are reporting that their emergency departments are at capacity and that patients are leaving without being evaluated. In Nebraska, a hospital released a video showing a nurse fielding three requests to care for critically ill virus patients, but having beds for only two of them. On Friday, Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio mobilized more than 1,000 National Guard members to help with hospital staffing.
At Covenant, there are fewer coronavirus patients than last winter, but limited staffing and a return of patients who delayed care for chronic issues during the pandemic have diminished resources.

The 10 Vaccinated Countries With At Least One Dose
Of course, fully vaccinated means that an individual should have taken both the doses of the vaccine, for those jabs that require two doses to provide full immunity against the COVID-19 disease.
Certain countries, however, have chosen a different path, delaying the second dose in order to vaccinate with at least one dose as many people as possible.
The most prominent example of this has been the United Kingdom.
The UK authorities decided that regardless of the vaccine, people were going to have their second dose three months after the first, in an attempt to provide -at least- partial immunity to as many people as possible.
This brings the UK really high on the list of those nations with vaccinated people, regardless of the fact that a great proportion of these is not fully vaccinated.
So, the UK stands eighth in the world, with 68 per cent of its entire population having received so far at least one dose of a vaccine.
Ahead of the UK, we see the nations of UAE, Malta, Iceland, Singapore, Uruguay, Canada, and Chile.
Qatar came 10th and the 9h place is taken by Belgium, the second EU member-state after Malta to make it to the top-10.
Cases And Deaths By Region
Reporting standards vary enormously in different countries. No statistics are particularly accurate, but case and death rates in India and Sub-Saharan Africa in particular are probably much higher than reported.

Top 10 Countries With Most Vaccinations Against Covid
The tiny European nation of Malta tops the list of the most vaccinated countries in the entire world. Over 80 per cent of the adult population in this beautiful Mediterranean island is fully vaccinated nowand yet, this is still not enough to keep COVID at bay.
Although Greece and Cyprus are not as high as Malta is, the two countries continue to be near or above the European average when it comes to vaccinations.
Approximately 52 per cent of the Greek population is now vaccinated with at least one dose, and 44 per cent have had both their doses or were vaccinated witha a single dose vaccine.
The data for Cyprus is a little higher, with 56 and 47 per cent respectively.

Cases Reported Since The Start Of The Vaccination Campaign As Of July 03 2021
Since the start of the vaccination campaign on December 14, 2020, PHAC received case-level vaccine history data for 75.5% of COVID-19 cases aged 12 years or older.
Of these cases:
- were unvaccinated at the time of their episode date
- were not yet protected by the vaccine, as their episode date occurred less than 14 days after their first dose
- were only partially vaccinated, as their episode date occurred either 14 days or more after their first dose or less than 14 days after their second dose
- were fully vaccinated, as their episode date occurred 14 days or more after their second dose
