Ten Countries Kept Out Covid But Did They Win

Covid-19 has infected almost every country in the world â apart from 10. So what do they do now?

The Palau Hotel opened in 1982, before mass tourism arrived here. But since then, this tiny nation, surrounded by the sky-blue Pacific Ocean, has enjoyed something of a boom.

In 2019, 90,000 tourists came to Palau, five times the total population. In 2017, IMF figures showed, tourism made up 40% of the countryâs GDP.

But that was pre-Covid.

Palau’s borders have been, in effect, closed since late March. It is one of the only 10 countries in the world with no confirmed cases .

Yet, without infecting a single person, the virus has ravaged the country.

The Palau Hotel has been closed since March, and itâs not alone. The restaurants are empty, the souvenir shops are shut, and the only hotel guests are returning residents in quarantine.

The Big Lie Loyalty To Trump And The Defense Of Democracy

Not everywhere in the South Pacific has been spared, either. Over the past two weeks, Vanuatu and the Marshall Islands reported their first cases, from quarantined travelers. Fiji and the Solomon Islands each count a handful, while Papua New Guinea has reported about 600 cases and seven deaths. French Polynesia has been particularly hard hit, with more than 11,000 cases and 50 deaths.

There has been perhaps no place on Earth where people have been more vigilant in keeping out the virus than Antarctica, the only continent which remains virus-free. Thats because any outbreak would be difficult to control in a place where people live in close quarters and where medical capabilities are limited. People who do get gravely ill on Antarctica typically must be evacuated, a process that can take days, or even weeks, due to the extreme weather conditions, which can delay flights.

While most countries have been reducing the number of scientists and staff they are sending to Antarctica this Southern Hemisphere summer, hundreds of people still have been arriving to ensure bases are maintained and long-term scientific programs continue to tick over.

Ms. Rogan-Finnemore says theyre making every effort to keep the virus out. Were doing our best in a global pandemic, she says.

Federated States Of Micronesia

Micronesia is usually known for its Chuuk – also called Truk – Lagoon diving

A divine Pacific archipelago of inaccessible coral atolls, amid the more populated Caroline Islands – where Pohnpei boasts prehistoric ruins and Chuuk Lagoon is a treasure trove of sunken WWII ships.

Is it really COVID-free? It’s very likely, with geographical isolation in their favour since United Airlines island-hopper service linking the Caroline Islands to Guam and Honolulu was suspended on 21 March. A suspected case back in mid-March proved negative.

The 12 Countries That Claim To Be Completely Coronavirus

At the time of writing, 12 of the UN’s 193 member countries report having zero cases of COVID-19 throughout the pandemic. So, which are they, and which will be the last country standing?

Shortly before putting this piece together, three of 18 countries that had not recorded cases of COVID-19 succumbed: São Tome, South Sudan and war-ravaged Yemen, where medical services were likely too overstretched to record cases earlier.

On 30 April 2020, Tajikistan reported its first 15 cases of COVID-19, and in May 2020, Comoros and Lesotho had also reported their first cases, meaning that 181 of the UNs 193 member countries are embroiled in the pandemic, based on data from European Centre for Disease Protection and Control and John Hopkins University. Therefore, only 12 remain virus-free at the time of writing, and the situation may change quickly.

So, where are these virus-free nations and how are they keeping COVID-19 at bay? By geographical isolation, preparedness, or even misinformation? And which of them might be the last nation standing? Let’s find out.

  • North Korea and Turkmenistan remain omitted from this list. Neither has reported any COVID-19 cases, but both totalitarian regimes control state media and data released to the rest of the world, hence making their figures unreliable.

Which Countries Have Not Reported Any Coronavirus Cases

Coronavirus has been labelled a pandemic but a handful of countries have not yet reported any cases.

In December 2019, the coronavirus was seemingly confined to China. But, a few weeks later, the virus, which causes the illness known as COVID-19, became a global pandemic.

The virus, which leads to a respiratory illness that can be transmitted from droplets of bodily fluids such as mucus and saliva, has now been reported in at least 188 countries.

Scientists, health officials and governments across the world have encouraged citizens to practise physical distancing and to avoid going out unless for necessary purposes.

According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, more than 29 million people have been infected, and the global death toll is at least 924,000. More than 19.6 million patients have recovered.

Here are a few countries that have not reported any cases of the coronavirus so far:

    Logarithmic Or Linear Scales

The vertical axis of our charts are shown using a logarithmic scale, where the same distance on the scale represents multiplying or dividing by the same amount, instead of adding or subtracting the same amount as is the case with a linear scale. Log scales are particularly suited to displaying trends in relative rates of change, like a virus spreading. By comparing the slopes of two lines, a log scale allows us to compare epidemics at a very early stage with those that are much more advanced, even though they have very different absolute numbers of cases or deaths.

On a log scale, an epidemic looks like a steep diagonal line that flattens towards a horizontal line as its rate of growth slows. On the more familiar linear scale, the same data looks like a hockey stick shooting upwards, which gives a better sense of the overall size of each countrys epidemic.

Level : High Level Of Covid

With fast internet connection and the possibility to easily meet other travelers or local friends, Mauritius, one of the East African island nations has everything remote workers and tourists need to feel safe during COVID-19.

How safe is Mauritius to visit during Covid-19? The CDC ranks Mauritius at level 3 relatively safe place to travel -.

The country is not open for tourism just yet. All international commercial flights can only transport a few categories of travelers. Residents and/or tourists who need to extend their visas or resident permits must contact the Mauritian Passport and Immigration Office.

The island recently announced its new Premium Travel Visa which will allow remote workers to live in the country for up to one year.

Esmeralda County Nevada: ‘it’s Kind Of Easy To Social Distance’

Sheriff Ken Elgan isn’t shy about why he thinks Esmeralda County is one of the last places in the country without COVID-19.

“Everybody is complying to maintain a COVID-19-free county,” he said, referring to wearing masks, social distancing and limiting gatherings. “The citizens of Esmeralda County have done an awesome job of keeping COVID out of here. What else could you attribute it to?”

The county, he explained, is split between three communities, with gold and lithium mining to the east and farming to the west, spread out across the mountainous high desert.

“When you have less than 1,000 people on 3,600 square miles, it’s kind of easy to social distance,” Elgan said.

Health care access in such a remote area is typically a harder prerogative. There’s no hospital or health clinic in the county. Instead, at Elgan’s request the state sent in the National Guard to test county residents in early August. Twelve people showed up for tests, he said, and everyone was negative.

Unlike Skagway or Kalawao counties, the pandemic hasn’t cut off Esmeralda from tourism. “U.S. 95 is a major artery that runs through our county seat,” Elgan said. “We do have people who stop for the historical aspects of it.”

Elgan credits the community he’s spent two decades serving, but he’s not ruling out luck’s role altogether. “Take all the precaution and hope for the best,” he said. “We have to go on living.”

Loving Texas: ‘two People With The Flu Is An Epidemic’

Mozelle Carr, a county clerk who grew up in the tiny West Texas enclave, pointed to Loving’s geography as a driving factor behind the county’s zero COVID cases.

It’s a land of wide-open skies and few people. Until an oil boom that picked up about a decade ago, Carr said, there was nothing, not even telephones lines, to obscure the sunset.

“We’re one of the least-populated counties in the United States,” Carr said. Among the 100 or so people who live in the community, only a handful are older adults, a demographic that’s especially susceptible to severe COVID-19 complications. “We have one couple that’s 89 and 93,” Carr said. “They wear masks in town when they come to get their mail.”

Residents aren’t scared, but they’re cautious, according to Carr, detailing the social distancing plan she has in place for the impending election. Two people allowed into the polling place at a time and there is a mail-in ballot option. Residents can honk their car horn twice for curbside voting.

“We dont anticipate any lines ever,” she said.

Loving’s one restaurant is open, but the courthouse has been closed to the public since the pandemic started. Oil field workers, many of whom drive in from surrounding counties and nearby New Mexico, have tested positive in a clinic run by the oil field, but aren’t counted in Loving’s COVID-19 tally. “They just send them home,” Carr said of the oil field workers.
