Hawaii Reopening To Canadian Travellers: What You Need To Know
Hawaii has been open to Canadian travellers since December 2020 however, its stricter entry requirements and intra-island travel restrictions have still kept many travellers at bay.
Following the US fully opening its borders on November 8, Hawaii has aligned its entry requirements accordingly, and will no longer require additional testing for US travellers.
Meanwhile, for those of us in Canada, travelling to Hawaii has gotten a lot simpler as of the same date, allowing us to enter Hawaii with a cheap and simple rapid antigen test.
What Are Hawaii’s Sea Travel Restrictions
If any crew, passenger or other person aboard a vessel arriving to a port or place within the navigable waters of the United States has been in PRC in the previous 14 days, that vessel will also be denied entry via issuance of a Captain of the Port order. Typically cargo ships take more than 14 days to travel from China to Honolulu.

How To Get To Hawaii
Travelling to Hawaii on points has largely been a point of frustration for Canadian travellers, especially on the East Coast.
For the winter travel season, Air Canada will be operating the following routes:
- Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver to Honolulu
- Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto to Maui
- Vancouver to Kona
With Aeroplan, these routes will cost 25,000 Aeroplan points one-way in business class from Vancouver, and 35,000 Aeroplan points one-way in business class from everywhere else.
However, these prices correspond to the lower end of Aeroplans dynamic pricing on Air Canada flights, and its relatively rare to find flights that actually fall at the lower end of the spectrum.
Therefore, a trip to Hawaii would be an optimal use of eUpgrades earned as part of Aeroplan Elite Status, under the Latitude Attitude strategy. You could book the much more reasonably priced Economy Latitude flight and then apply eUpgrades to upgrade into business class.
In addition, Hawaii would also represent a great opportunity to use your Priority Rewards if you have any, allowing you to receive a 50% discount on eligible Aeroplan points redemptions.
For those on the West Coast, using British Airways Avios to fly Alaska Airliness routes to Hawaii is also a sweet spot, costing just 13,000 Avios in economy class each way from Seattle to Honolulu.

When Should You Take The Test
Remember, you must take your pre-travel test 72 hours from the final leg/city of departure before arriving in Hawaii. You must then ensure you receive your negative result prior to departure for Hawaii. As an example, we’ve included a 72-hour timeline chart to help visualize this.
Typically, many flights to Hawaii will arrive in the evening hours, which means they will depart from the last major continental U.S. city sometime between 3 pm and 7 pm PST. For example, a flight that departs from Oakland International Airport at 4:30 pm PST on Monday, means you need to take the test anytime after 4:30 pm PST on Friday.
Don’t worry about what time it is in Hawaii when getting the test, you simply need to take the test 72-hours before departing the final city to Hawaii so if anything – worry about the timezone of your final continental U.S. airport and/or the timezone of where you take the test.

Covid Testing Requirements While On Oahu
Mele Kalikimaka!! My family is heading to Hawaii on 8 January. I have two members of my family that cant get the vaccine. I understand the pre-travel test requirements for them, but Im a bit confused regarding what is expected during our one-week stay . Are they required to get tested during the week? How often? Based on what I learn, Ill book appointments beforehand at CVS near Waikiki. Thank you!

Right now–emphasis on “now”…..you will need a test that is no more than 48 hours old to eat indoors, or attend some other things. IIRC, Pearl Harbor, the Bishop Museum, maybe Iolani Palace require the same.
Best thing is to check your activity plans and confirm with the company itself or site. As for tests, make sure you get the rapid ones.
Thanks for the info. That confirms what I thought. Ive found that the definition Rapid is up to interpretation. There are two types of tests that are considered rapid, the PCR/NAAT and the antigen. To travel to Hawaii, the State requires the PCR test. I assume that it would be the test required while on the island to eat in restaurants, etc., too. Do you know if thats correct? Here in Maryland, the PCR is taking 48-72 hours to get results. Maybe thats because of the spike in infections/tests. That delay makes travel stressful to say the least.

Fly To Hawaii And Show Your Documentation To Airport Personnel
There is a lot of time to worry about whether you will make it into Hawaii before you land. The state is about six hours from the major airports of the West Coast alone. For me, it was more than 13 hours of flying, or 22 hours door-to-door, coming from Maine.
When I landed in Maui, the line to get through the entry process was so long I couldnt see the end of it. Fisher says wait times will depend on how many flights are coming in at once and not everyone will experience my hour-long queue.
If you are connecting to another island, airport attendants will take you to a different line, and you may have to fill out additional paperwork. I was told by my flight attendant that travelers to Maui needed to download the AlohaSafe Alert App however, no one checked to see if I had.
During my turn at the processing desk, an attendant asked for my QR code and photo ID. I was cleared and given permission to start my quarantine-free stay in Hawaii.
The process overall was doable, albeit anxiety-inducing along the way. Working with a travel adviser may have alleviated some of the logistical worries, but judging from the crowd at the airport, people are navigating the entry requirements on their own just fine.
How Can Canadians Enter Hawaii
Travellers are allowed to enter Hawaii through all international airports and by sea via a cruise. As of October 2021, when departing Canada by air, travellers are required to present proof of vaccination.
Travellers coming from Canada must fulfill all of the following conditions before entering Hawaii:
- Present evidence of a full course of COVID-19 vaccines 14 days prior to arrival.
- Mixed vaccines are permitted.
The Safe Travels Form requires uploading a COVID-19 test result or a vaccination record in order to obtain a QR code, which youll need to present upon landing.
A negative COVID-19 test result is required regardless of whether you fly non-stop to Hawaii or take a connecting flight:
- If you fly directly to Hawaii from Canada, a test result will be required prior to your flight.
- Meanwhile, if you connect through the continental US on the way to Hawaii, youll still need a test result to enter the United States on the first leg of your journey.

How To Get Tested Near Your Location
Testing Performed by the Airlines
- The state of Hawaii has partnered with several airlines/airports to provide pre-travel testing to Hawaii. The airlines themselves are not individually performing the tests but have instead partnered with local labs in their main West Coast hubs who offer flights directly to Hawaii. However, this option really only works well for travelers who can get tested before arriving at the respective airport, as anyone with a connecting flight would have to leave security to get tested.
- Currently, the only in terminal option for testing is at San Francisco Airport but you will likely pay a hefty amount for the convenience, about $250 per traveler. Additionally, Hawaiian Airlines has announced it is offering drive-thru testing to its passengers departing from San Francisco International Airport , but the test site is located 10 miles from the airport, so that option again will not work for travelers with connecting flights.
