French Winemakers To Turn Unsold Wine Into Hand Sanitizer

Phase 2, people 55 and up eligible for COVID-19 vaccine in Tennessee on Monday

Nancy Ing

French winegrowers will distill millions of gallons of unsold wine to make hand sanitizer after the government agreed to fund the effort, the countrys farming agency said.

The surplus of wine is due to a drop in consumption during the coronavirus lockdown, as well as a lack of exports to the U.S. in part because of wine tariffs.

“Since the start of , it is estimated that sales of alcohol have decreased by 40 to 50 percent,” the National Confederation of Wine and Brandy Producers said last week. “The situation that will continue to persist with the continued closure of the bars and restaurants.

French winegrowers have lobbied the French government and European Commission since April for financial assistance to de-stock and find a use for wine that would not be consumed. Just over 30 approved distillers in France will be able to collect wine and transform it into hand sanitizing gel.

The exceptional measure, authorized by Brussels and financed by European public funds, extends until October 15. Winegrowers have until June 19 to register.

What Should I Bring To My Vaccine Or Booster Appointment

Some vaccination sites ask for proof of identity or eligibility. Bring a drivers license or other state-issued ID that shows your name, age and state residency, along with your health insurance card, if you have one. You wont be charged for the initial vaccine series, or a booster shot, but the vaccine provider may bill your insurer a fee for administering the vaccine. After your first shot, bring your vaccine card for subsequent shots.

Eligible Conditions: Obesity Diabetes Hiv Dementia Cancer And More

The transition to vaccination phase 1C opens eligibility up to all Tennesseans age 16 and older who are diagnosed with a list of conditions that make them high risk for coronavirus complications.

According to the states vaccination plan, that list includes: Current cancer treatment, chronic renal disease, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, moderate or severe asthma, obesity, heart failure, hypertension, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, diabetes, cerebrovascular disease or stroke, liver disease or dementia.

The vaccine is also eligible to anyone who is immunocompromised due to a medical condition, like HIV, or a medical procedure, like an organ transplant. The population also includes pregnant women and their household contacts, Piercey said.

“That is a large population. We have estimated it to be in excess of 1.1 million Tennesseans,” Piercey said at a Tuesday briefing. “Unfortunately, we have high rates of many of these chronic diseases and so we expect quite a bit of demand.”

Tennessee should be able to handle this demand due to rapidly expanding vaccine supplies. This week the state expects to get 196,000 doses of Pfizer and Moderna vaccine plus another 54,000 doses of the new single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine which should be enough doses to full vaccinate about 152,000 people.

Our employees will also be required to wear masks when dealing with the public unless a partition is between the customer and employee. We have an occupational employment duty to protect our employees and ensure the continuity of county and city operations.

Private businesses have the right to require masks for people entering their businesses as well, and we highly encourage all people to wear masks when social distancing cannot be accomplished, Mayor Durrett added.

City of Clarksville Mayor Joe Pitts said he and Mayor Durrett and public and private health officials have conferred about the mask mandate and other issues throughout the pandemic.
