How often you receive health and wellbeing checks while you are self-isolating will depend on your symptoms and recovery.
If you have moderate symptoms or are more at risk, you are likely to receive a virtual health check every day.
If you have mild symptoms, you will likely receive a virtual health check from your health provider every second day.
If you need urgent medical help or are having difficulties breathing, call 111 immediately. Tell them you have COVID-19 when you call.
Your household contacts will need to be tested to check whether they have a COVID-19 infection. You will be advised when, how and where this needs to be done.
You Have Been Infected With The Virus And Are Self
The following rules of conduct will apply while you self-isolate at your home. Self-isolating at home means that you remain in your own room and also sleep there. The other members of your household must not enter your room. In other words, you do not meet the other members of your household face to face.
- You are not allowed to go outside, to school, to the shops, or to work.
- Have others do your shopping for you or have your groceries delivered to your home.
- Ask others to take your child to childcare, school or any extracurricular activities, such as sports or music lessons, for you.
- You are allowed to sit in your garden or on your balcony.
- You are not allowed to receive visitors, except for medical reasons .
- The only people who are allowed to be with you in your home are the people you live with. You do not talk face to face with the people with whom you share your home. So no hugging, kissing or having sex.
- Stay in your own room and also sleep there by yourself. Make sure the room is properly ventilated.
- If possible, use a separate toilet and bathroom for yourself. Clean it every day.
- Use your own towels and your own toothbrush.

Testing Positive For Covid
If you test positive for COVID-19 you must immediately isolate.

State and territory health authorities have information, resources and links for more support for people with COVID-19, including when you can leave isolation:
You are a close contact if you:
- live in the same house as someone who tests positive
- spent 4 hours or longer with someone in a home, or health or aged care environment
- are determined as one by your state or territory health department.
If you are a close contact of someone who has COVID-19 you must isolate for 7 days from the last time you were in contact with that person.
If you have symptoms you should visit your nearest testing clinic as soon as possible.
If you have no symptoms you should take a rapid antigen test at home.
Rapid antigen tests will become increasingly available at supermarkets and pharmacies. Do not enter pharmacies, supermarkets or other retail outlets if you have symptoms or suspect you have been exposed to COVID-19. Dont Count On Natural Immunity For Future Protection
When you test positive for Covid, laboratories wont tell you which variant you had, but with omicron spreading so quickly, there is a fair assumption that most cases going forward will be that strain, Shah said.
Regardless of which strain you catch, natural immunity alone is no guarantee of future protection against reinfection. Studies indicate a booster shot is the best bet.
There are data now to suggest that if youve been vaccinated and have had Covid, you are in very, very solid shape in terms of protection, Shaffner said. Does that mean its impossible for you to get infected? No, but you are in very good shape.
If you have not gotten vaccinated, he added, you are in much less good shape, even though you have had Covid and recovered.
Tips For Keeping Your Whnau Safe
To help reduce the spread of germs, if possible, you should:
- Stay away from others in your home stay out of rooms where others are and do not share a bed if possible. Do not prepare food for others.
- Wear a face mask or face covering. It is recommended each household member has a minimum of two face coverings, and that each is washed at the end of the day.
- As much as possible, open windows and doors to allow air to flow through your house.
- Wipe down surfaces shared with others like bathroom taps and kitchen benches with soap, water and a cloth after each use. Do not share dishes and cutlery, towels and pillows.
- Please do your own laundry.
- Wash your hands often and cough or sneeze into an elbow or a tissue. Bag your tissues and put them a rubbish bin away from people in your household.

If You Test Positive Or Have Symptoms
- Stay home and away from others for at least five days after your symptoms started. If you do not have symptoms, stay home for five days from the date you tested positive, even if you are fully vaccinated. Refer to the how long to stay home section below.
- You can spread COVID-19 to others starting a couple days before you have any symptoms, and even if you never have any symptoms.
Wear a well-fitting mask for 10 days when around others, even at home. The 10 days start the day after you got symptoms. If you do not have symptoms, the 10 days start the day after you got tested.

How Will I Know I Have Covid
Most people can now use a rapid antigen test result to confirm they are positive for COVID-19.
This includes people with symptoms, people who live with someone who has COVID-19, people who have spent a long time with, or interacted closely with someone who has COVID-19, and people who have travelled internationally within the last 14 days.

Stop Isolating When Its Safe To Do So
The five-day-minimum rule is firm for isolation, but if you live with a family,there may be some situations where it doesnt make sense to isolate away from your household.
One thing to think about is the point of time at which you test positive, it is very likely you have already exposed your family, so the best practice is to isolate, but your family should also consider getting tested within a couple of days, Piltch-Loeb said. If they are all exposed, you should all isolate as a pod together.

Additional Support For Those Who Lead A Nomadic Way Of Life
People who live on a traveller site, in a vehicle or on a canal boat may require additional support.
Let your site manager or local Gypsy and Traveller liaison team know if you need further support. If you are living on a river or canal, find out what advice is being offered by the organisation who manages the waterway you live on, as this varies for each one. Try to communicate by phone as much as possible to prevent spreading the virus to further contacts.
If you lack access to basic facilities such as water, sanitation and waste disposal to help with self-isolation, contact your local authority for assistance. They may be able to provide you with additional facilities or make alternative stopping places available.
The prevailing laws against unauthorised encampments or unauthorised development remain in place.
Waste should continue to be disposed of through authorised and legal means. Guidance for local authorities on re-opening or keeping household waste and recycling centres open is available. If you need further advice, contact your local authority.

What Do I Do If Someone I Live With Has Covid
Again, there is no legal requirement to self-isolate and no financial help for those who do.
The UK Government’s advice is:
- minimise contact with the person who has Covid-19
- work from home if you are able to do so
- avoid contact with anyone you know who is at higher risk of becoming severely unwell if they are infected with Covid-19, especially those with a severely weakened immune system
- limit close contact with other people outside your household, especially in crowded, enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces
- wear a well-fitting face covering made with multiple layers or a surgical face mask in crowded, enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces and where you are in close contact with other people
- pay close attention to the main symptoms of Covid-19. If you develop any of these symptoms, order a PCR test. You are advised to stay at home and avoid contact with other people while you are waiting for your test result

How To Take Care Of Yourself If You Have Covid
Contact your regular primary care provider immediately. Let them know that you have been diagnosed or tested positive for COVID-19 and are at home to rest and recover. They may have further instructions or be able to answer additional questions you may have as they guide your recovery.
Take care of yourself. Get plenty of rest. Stay hydrated by drinking lots of fluids, like water or herbal tea, things that dont contain caffeine or alcohol. Choose foods like soups with lots of liquid. Over-the-counter medications can help to manage your symptoms follow your health care providers instructions, or ask them for advice about medications you may take for your symptoms.
Monitor your symptoms carefully. If your symptoms get worse, call your health care provider immediately. If you develop emergency warning signs, get medical attention immediately the same as you would for any emergency condition.For medical emergencies, call 911. Notify the dispatcher that you have or may have COVID-19.

If You Have A Vaccine Appointment
If you have COVID-19, do not go to a vaccine appointment if you have one scheduled. Wait until it has been 4 weeks since you tested positive. Phone HSELive on to get a new appointment date.
Do not go to the pharmacy or shop for any reason. If you need medication, check if your pharmacy does home delivery or ask someone to go for you.
Treating Ourselves At Home
Most of us will be treating ourselves at home.
This will usually apply to people who are under 65, arent pregnant, have had at least two doses of a COVID vaccine, and dont suffer from any chronic conditions.
Here are some things to consider:
as youre not allowed to leave the house at all , ensure you have ways of getting food and medication, such as via home delivery services
rest, keep up your fluids, and treat pain and fever symptoms with over-the-counter medications if needed, like paracetamol and ibuprofen
nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea arent uncommon. If you experience any of these, eat small meals more often, stick to white coloured foods , and drink enough for your urine to look pale
continue your usual medications. Its very important you dont stop taking these, unless your GP specifically advises otherwise
if you have access to an oxygen monitor, use it three times a day or if you feel your breathlessness is worsening. If your levels are 92% or lower, you need urgent review. Dont rely on a smart watch for oxygen monitoring.

If You Have A Vulnerable Person Living With You
If you can, arrange for anyone who is at increased risk from COVID-19 or clinically extremely vulnerable to move out of your home. They could stay with friends or family for the self-isolation periods that you and your other household members need to complete at home.
If you cannot arrange for those vulnerable people to move out of your home, you should stay away from them as much as possible.
You should help those who are at increased risk or extremely vulnerable to minimise their contact with other people in your household during the self-isolation period. This is regardless of whether other household members have symptoms or not. You can also use this advice to protect all the people you live with.
Help And Financial Advice Whilst Self
Employers should not require you to go back to work if you have been notified by NHS Wales TTP that you need to self-isolate. They should enable or allow you to stay at home. This includes if you have tested positive for COVID-19 or been in close contact with someone who has tested positive.

You May Be Able To Shorten Your Quarantine
Your local public health authorities make the final decisions about how long quarantine should last, based on local conditions and needs. Follow the recommendations of your local public health department if you need to quarantine. Options they will consider include stopping quarantine
- After day 10 without testing
- After day 7 after receiving a negative test result
In areas using options to reduce quarantine times, people who are asymptomatic can use a negative test result collected on day five after exposure to exit quarantine on day seven , with additional self-monitoring. The day of exposure is considered day zero .
Pcr Testing For Children
When to take your child for a PCR test
PCR tests will now only be used for children under the age two, and those who are a member of a priority group identified by Public Health.
The nose swab is the recommended standard test for all New Brunswickers, however the swish and gargle is available for children 4-11 years of age who are unable to receive the nose swab. Either test will accurately detect if your child has COVID-19.
Parents and caregivers should assess their child daily for key symptoms of illness before sending them to school or early learning childcare facility. You can use the COVID-19 self-assessment tool to determine if your child should seek testing.
How to prepare for the test
A PCR test for COVID-19 in children and youth is done by swishing and gargling sterile salt water and spitting it into a tube, or by using a swab to collect a sample from their nose. The swish and gargle test is for children ages 4 to 11 years of age. Watch a video about what you and your child can expect during a COVID-19 swish and gargle test.
Practice the swish, gargle and spit technique with salty water at home before going to the collection centre. Wait at least one hour between practicing and doing the test as practicing could affect test results. Ask your child not to swallow the water or talk when they practice.

If Your Test Result Is Positive
If the result is positive, you should self-isolate from the day your symptoms started and for the next 10 days.
You can end self-isolation as long as you do not still have a high temperature. If you still have a high temperature, you should continue to self-isolate until your temperature has returned to normal.
You do not need to continue self-isolating for more than 10 days if you only have a cough or loss of sense of smell or taste, as these symptoms can last for several weeks following a COVID-19 infection.
