How Is It Different

The B.1.1.7 variant has several mutations that affect the spike protein. This protein is found on the surface of the virus. Its what the virus uses to bind to and enter a host cell in your body.

This variant transfers more quickly between individuals. Public health officials in the U.K. note that B.1.1.7 is about 50 percent more infectious than the original coronavirus.

Why exactly this is isnt known, but its possible that the mutations in the spike protein help B.1.1.7 to bind more tightly to a host cell. Data from laboratory experiments thats currently in preprint supports this idea.

Additionally, some research has found that B.1.1.7 samples are associated with a higher amount of virus . Increased amounts of virus in people who have contracted this variant could also make it easier to transmit to other individuals.

Faster transmission can have a big effect because when a virus transfers more quickly, more people can become sick. This can lead to more hospitalizations and deaths, placing a heavy burden on healthcare systems.

A report from scientists in the U.K. also suggests that people who contract B.1.1.7 potentially have an increased risk for death. However, additional research is needed to investigate this finding.

What Is The Delta Variant Of Covid

The Delta variant, also known by its scientific name as B.1.617.2, was a strain of the coronavirus first identified in October in Maharashtra, India.

The strain was first named the Delta variant by the World Health Organization after the global health agency implemented a naming system based on Greek letters this month.

Although it is just one out of many variants that are spreading around during the pandemic, World Health Organization officials have called it a variant of concern.

Gottlieb said in a previous media appearance that all the COVID-19 vaccines work against the Delta variant in differing degrees.

The mRNA vaccine seems to be highly effective, two doses of that vaccine against this variant. The viral vector vaccines from J&J and AstraZeneca also appear to be effective, about 60% effective. The mRNA vaccines are about 88% effective, Gottlieb said, referring to the Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines.

Are Coronavirus Variations Common

In general, viruses are prone to picking up small genetic changes as they move through a host population. Viruses that encode their genome in RNA, such as SARS-CoV-2, HIV and influenza, tend to pick up mutations quickly as they are copied inside their hosts, because enzymes that copy RNA are prone to making errors, Nature writer Ewen Callaway explains.

Scientists have been tracking minor changes in the COVID-19 genetic code since the beginning of the pandemic, and at least 1,000 variants have been detected so far. But the change to the spike protein found in southeast England represents one of the first coronavirus mutations that have made it more infectious.

As the Wall Street Journalnotes, this isnt the first time that COVID mutations have resulted in a more transmissible strain of the virus:

Scientists in July described a variant that over time displaced an older strain of coronavirus to become the dominant strain in the global pandemic. Experiments showed that variant, known as G614, replicated more quickly, but appeared to be just as susceptible to antibodies that target the earlier strain and wasnt associated with more severe illness.

The highly transmissible delta variant is now the dominant strain of the coronavirus in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday.

As of July 3, the latest date for which data was available, the delta variant accounted for 51.7 percent of new Covid-19 cases that had been genetically sequenced in the country. Two weeks earlier, on June 19, the variant accounted for just over 30 percent of new cases.

During a news briefing Tuesday, President Joe Biden cited the delta variant’s rapid spread to urge people to get vaccinated, “especially young people who may have thought that they didn’t have to be vaccinated, didn’t have to worry about it, didn’t have to do anything about it.”

“This should cause everybody to think twice,” Biden said.

Studies have shown that the Covid-19 vaccines are effective against multiple variants, including the delta variant. A recent report from Public Health England, where the variant accounts for more than 90 percent of new cases, found two doses of the Pfizer vaccine to be 96 percent effective against hospitalization.

In addition to the U.S., the delta variant has been detected in 103 countries and is predicted to become the dominant variant globally.

Is The Mu Variant More Transmissible

There are currently very few studies looking into the Mu variant. As research on this specific variant is all in early stages, its too early to know whether the strain is more transmissible or more severe than other variants.

One pre-print study which is yet to be peer-reviewed says that although the Mu strain is not yet classified as a variant of concern by WHO , the mutations found in the B.1.621 strain could have a synergistic impact on attributes such as reduction of vaccine-induced protection from severe disease, increased transmission and disease severity.

Scientists are concerned about the variant because clinical trials of vaccines are showing that they offer less protection against B.1.351 than other variants. People who recover from other variants may not be able to fend off B.1.351 because their antibodies wont grab the viruses tightly. Health officials still dont know much about the Mu variant, but early research has health officials scrambling to learn more.

The Mu variant is found to have key mutations linked to greater transmissibility and the potential to evade antibodies. Another New Strain Has Been Found In California

As the virus rages through southern California, authorities have identified another new strain in a dozen counties, and have connected it to several considerable outbreaks in Santa Clara County. The Los Angeles Timesreports that the California Department of Public Health is unsure if the variant is highly contagious or is just being identified frequently as lab work becomes more sophisticated. Similar to the U.K. variant, the one found in California appears to feature a mutation on the spike protein.

    Gamma: The P1 Lineage

    A variant known as 20J/501Y.V3 is from the P.1 lineage, an offshoot of the larger B.1.1.28 lineage.

    The variant was first reported in Japan, in four people who contracted P.1 on a trip to Brazil. The lineage, also known as Gamma, emerged in late 2020 in Manaus, the largest city in Brazils Amazon region. It quickly became the predominant variant there and in several other South American cities.

    P.1 is a close relative of the B.1.351 lineage, and it has some of the same mutations on the coronavirus spike protein. It may be able to overcome the immunity developed after infection by other variants.

    Iota: The B1526 Lineage

    A group of coronaviruses known as B.1.526 or Iota has been spreading rapidly in New York City. The variant appears in two forms: one with the E484K spike mutation, which may help the virus evade antibodies, and one with the S477N mutation, which may help the virus bind more tightly to human cells.

    Delta Variant In Us: Which States Are Most At Risk As Covid Strain Spreads

    The most vulnerable areas of the country to Delta variant outbreaks have low vaccination rates and low rates of immunity from previous infections. AP

    The highly concerning Delta variant of COVID-19 is on the rise in the U.S., giving experts caution as the strain of the virus is spreading through certain parts of the country.

    Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the former head of the Food and Drug Administration, said Sunday on CBSs Face the Nation that there are certain parts of the country where we can have very dense outbreaks of the Delta variant.

    The most vulnerable areas of the country to these outbreaks have low vaccination rates and low rates of immunity from previous infections.

    According to a chart from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , the southern half of the U.S. has vaccination rates that fall well below the national average.

    The CDC said 46.1% of the U.S. has been vaccinated against the coronavirus.
