The Coronavirus Pandemic: Key Things To Know

Bidens new plan.President Biden announced new steps to confront the surge in Covid cases, including setting up new testing sites and buying 500 million rapid tests to distribute free to the public. But experts warned the measures would not stop an Omicron surge, and it could be weeks until enough tests are available.

Around the world. After infections skyrocketed to record levels in South Africa, new cases have started falling, suggesting its Omicron wave may have peaked. In Europe, the Netherlands, Britain and Denmark adopted tough restrictions, while France, Spain and Italy are taking a more measured approach.

Anal Salazar Cal Poly San Luis Obispo

I’m a transfer from Santa Barbara City College. Going from a school where we had an environment where it was all people of color, all coming from similar backgrounds, to coming to a campus where everyone’s white, it’s definitely a transition to say the least. I have a friend in my class who I know from City College, and he also speaks Spanish. We’ll be in our welding class, speaking in Spanish, and we’ll be yelling at each other in Spanish because that’s how we are, and everyone is staring at us, like, “What are they saying?”

It’s been funny in that circumstance, but it’s definitely different in the aspect of walking around campus and then seeing a huge group of frat boys walking towards me. I am a small person. I am a five-foot little brown girl. So seeing a huge group of, like, 6’3″ white frat men not a great feeling. That’s been the biggest difference, being in an environment where I don’t know if I’m ok. They could be the nicest people ever, but also, you have no idea, because of how many incidents so many frats have had.

Targeted Safer At Home Order

What is allowed and what is prohibited?

Mayor Garcettis emergency order can be found here. You can also find a list of whats open here.

Its important to note that COVID-19 remains a threat and Angelenos are still safer at home. Even as we continue slow, gradual steps forward — and sometimes backward if the data requires us to do so — we recommend everyone stay home whenever possible and follow all health protocols. You are required to wear a face covering when you leave your home and will be near other people, and you should always maintain six feet of distance from others.

How long will the Order last?

The Targeted Safer at Home Order aligns with the latest health order from the LA County Department of Public Health. The City and County will continue to monitor public health data and guidance, and conform our policies accordingly with the safety of our residents foremost in our minds.

If public health conditions change, it may become necessary to step backward periodically and for the City to amend this Order to be more restrictive.

What is Safer at Home?

To combat the spread of COVID-19, Mayor Eric Garcetti issued a Safer at Home emergency order on March 19 ordering all residents of the City of Los Angeles to stay inside their residences, and immediately limit all movement outside of their homes beyond what is absolutely necessary to take care of essential needs.

What are essential activities and what businesses are open?

Does It Matter What Brand Of Home Test I Get

As long as the tests are cleared by the Food and Drug Administration under an Emergency Use Authorization, it doesnt matter which brand you get, said Dr. Ratner.

At-home tests can be purchased at most major drugstores, though Walgreens and CVS announced on Wednesday theyre limiting the number of test kits per purchase at locations nationwide amid a surge in demand.

Currently, there are several rapid home antigen tests available in the United States. The best known include Abbotts BinaxNOW, Quidels QuickVue and the recently authorized test by Acon Labs, Flowflex.Newer tests on the market include the Intrivo On/Go, the iHealth Covid-19 test and the BD Veritor at-home digital test kit. The InteliSwab test has the longest wait time, at 30 to 40 minutes. Australias Ellume has been in the news for a high rate of false positives, but those faulty tests have been recalled. Most of the tests are typically packaged two per box, although Flowflex offers a single test pack for about $10. Read the label before you buy. Some of the tests require an app.

Join Virtual Clubs And Organizations

The pandemic may have canceled plenty of events and activities, but it didnt cancel the organizations or clubs that function both in the city and on your campus. Its tougher garnering that community mindset when all your programming is virtual, we are trying to figure out how to bridge that gap with all the tools we have, Palen said. Even though they will feel and function differently, virtual programs are better than nothing and can still have a large impact on getting adjusted to your new normal.

Many local and school-based organizations and clubs still conduct meetings through the pandemic and offer a good way to stay connected to people, even if you cant meet in person. Everyones kind of in the same boat right now where were all kind of separate, but still, at least for me, kind of craving that human interaction in any way that I can, Malzahn said. City-based Facebook groups like Hiking Los Angeles, LA Friday Night Skate or VegansofLA, easily let you connect with people nearby with shared interests whatever your interest, theres surely a group for it. Is It Possible To Test Too Early

Yes. Dont test immediately after an exposure or high-risk gathering and assume you are in the clear, since it can take a few days for the virus to reach detectable levels. Doing it too soon is like a pregnancy test, said Dr. Panagis Galiatsatos, a pulmonary and critical care medicine physician at Johns Hopkins Medicine. If you test too soon, it means nothing.

The advice changes if you already are experiencing Covid symptoms. In that case, you should get tested right away. Try taking a rapid test on the day symptoms start, and if thats negative, take another test a few days later.

Venice And Marina Del Rey

LA County Closes Beaches To Prevent Crowds During Coronavirus Outbreak

Until recently, generations of diners on the Venice boardwalk have had to settle for burgers, pizza and beach joints. The upside to this informal atmosphere is that most restaurants have ample outside dining, pandemic or not. But culinary sophistication has arrived with the overhaul of one of the most iconic of these restaurants, the Fig Tree, by the siblings Matias and Sophia Moreno-Bunge and the chef Dashiell Nathanson, formerly of Los Angeless excellent small plate wine bar AOC.

Inspired by several favorite South American restaurants, the globe-trotting trio stripped down the place to its minimalist core, planted a jungle of flowers, and put together a menu with strong Mediterranean and Latin roots. The offerings are fresh, locally sourced and, unique to the boardwalk, elegant. Diplomacy comes easy when sharing plates of tangy beet salad or squid ink pappardelle, but for desserts such as crispy churros in chocolate sauce: War! Meanwhile, the tables on the patio offer front seats to the theater of humanity that walks, rolls and dances along the boardwalk. Dinner for two with drinks is around $115. On weekend nights seek out the music for the inevitable salsa and samba sessions in surrounding parking lots or massive drum circles on the beach.
