  • PHOENIX Two major pharmacy chains announced that they will start giving kids as young as 5 the Pfizer COVID-19 this weekend.

Walgreens will have its first appointments available on Saturday. CVS starts giving shots on Sunday. A parent or legal guardian must provide consent for the vaccination and be with the child for the appointment. The Food and Drug Administration approved Pfizers pediatric COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use in kids 5-11 earlier this week, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just formally recommended it. There are an estimated 28 million American kids in the 5-11 age group.

The pediatric version of Pfizers COVID-19 vaccine is a lower dose than what adults and kids as young as 12 get, and its administered with a smaller needle. Its still a two-dose vaccine, with about three weeks between the first and second dose.

Walgreens said its appointment times will accommodate family and school schedules. Walgreens pharmacy team members have significant experience vaccinating children and adolescents, and are ready to immunize this newly eligible population safely and as quickly as possible, Dr. Kevin Ban, the chief medical officer of Walgreens, said.

I became eligible to get the coronavirus vaccine on February 15. Hoping to get an edge on the millions of other newly eligible New Yorkers Id be competing with for an appointment, I spent a few days before the big day figuring out how and where to sign up for a vaccine between the many portals for my state, my city, health care providers, and retail pharmacies that were distributing them.

And thats when I noticed something about Walgreens:

love to give my personal data to Walgreens in order to get a potentially life-saving vaccine

    Sara Morrison

Last November, the Trump administration announced a partnership with retail pharmacies to distribute coronavirus vaccines, which would provide people across the country with more places to get vaccines and people to administer them. Thats a good thing. The other side of it is, as the Wall Street Journal reported this week, some pharmacies are taking advantage of the program to make some extra money off of their new customers.

To schedule vaccination appointments, we ask people to create a Walgreens account to fulfill data and reporting requirements online before arriving at a store location, a Walgreens spokesperson told Recode. This enables a safer and more streamlined in-store experience reducing lines and in-store wait times that can be a by-product of collecting this information at the pharmacy counter.

Because the children’s doses are smaller and in different containers, the doses must be shipped to both the state and city. Vials of the lower-dose Pfizer vaccine for kids are headed to the Chicago area any day now, health officials say.

Walgreens said it is expecting shipments to arrive “later this week” but appointments for pediatric vaccinations are already available.

They can be made at Walgreens.com/ScheduleVaccine, through the Walgreens app or by calling 1-800-Walgreens.

Walgreens said more appointments will be available in the coming weeks as the chain receives additional vaccine.

Meanwhile, CVS said it plans to start offering doses to younger children beginning Sunday.

The chain said its 1,700 locations nationwide, including more than 50 Illinois pharmacies, are already taking appointments as they anticipate vaccine supply to arrive.

CVS noted that parental or legal guardian consent is required, and children must be accompanied by an adult to get their shots.

Appointments can be made online at CVS.com or through the CVS Pharmacy app.

The Illinois Department of Public Health said Wednesday that it plans to align with the CDC’s recent guidance.

Moderna Announces Covid Vaccine Can Be Stored For Up To Three Months

Among other things, tracking wasted doses helps to identify bottlenecks where distribution adjustments might be needed, said Dr. Bruce Y. Lee, a professor of health policy and management at the City University of New York. Because the federal government is footing the bill, any waste amounts to “basically throwing money down the chute,” he said. CVS, Walgreens and other retailers don’t pay for the vaccines the government provides them. And under the Medicare program, it pays providers about $40 for each dose administered.

    Broken Freezers Bent Needles No

The reasons states gave for waste varied, from broken vials and syringes to providers’ storage errors to leftover doses from open vials that couldn’t be used.

The largest waste incidents, in which hundreds of doses were lost at a time, tended to be due to freezer malfunctions or workers’ leaving doses at room temperature too long.

But state records also register the little things that can go wrong.

On Dec. 16, the Public Health Department in Gunnison County, Colorado, lost a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine when someone bumped into a table and a vial spilled. On Jan. 5, the Tri-County Health Department in Westminster, Colorado, reported that it wasted a Moderna dose because a hypodermic needle bent.

Remi Graber, a registered nurse who has vaccinated people at mass sites and community health clinics in Rhode Island, said it’s not uncommon for a vial to have one too many or one too few doses, which can lead to a dose’s being counted as wasted. Syringe problems also sometimes result in waste.

But Graber said the biggest problem is people who don’t show up. Once a vial is punctured, Pfizer’s vaccine must be used within six hours. On April 1, Moderna announced that an opened vaccine vial was good for 12 hours â double what it had been previously.

CORRECTION : A previous version of the headline on this article misstated the total number of vaccine doses wasted. More than 100,000 doses have been wasted, not hundreds of thousands of doses.

Possible Side Effects After Getting A Covid

Does citizenship status affect eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine? | Walgreens

CDC has updated its recommendations for COVID-19 vaccines with a preference for people to receive an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine . Read CDCs media statement.

COVID-19 vaccination will help protect people from getting COVID-19. Adults and children may have some side effects from the vaccine, which are normal signs that their body is building protection. These side effects may affect their ability to do daily activities, but they should go away in a few days. Some people have no side effects, and allergic reactions are rare.

Serious side effects that could cause a long-term health problem are extremely unlikely following any vaccination, including COVID-19 vaccination. Vaccine monitoring has historically shown that side effects generally happen within six weeks of receiving a vaccine dose. For this reason, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration collected data on each of the authorized COVID-19 vaccines for a minimum of two months after the final dose. CDC is continuing to monitor the safety of COVID-19 vaccines even now that the vaccines are in use.

The benefits of COVID-19 vaccination outweigh the known and potential risks. Rare cases of myocarditis and pericarditis in adolescents and young adults have been reported more often after getting the second dose than after the first dose of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines.

Cdc Numbers Don’t Include Many States

The federal government collects information about vaccine waste through federal systems called VTrckS, which manages ordering and shipments, and Tiberius, a platform run by the Department of Health and Human Services that monitors distribution. VTrckS can exchange data with state and local immunization registries that track who has received shots, but some states rely on manual data entry, Hannan said.

The 15 states not included in the CDC’s data are Alaska, California, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas. The District of Columbia is also missing.

Of those jurisdictions, 11 provided data to KHN: Alaska, Colorado, Kansas, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Texas and the District of Columbia.

Most of those reported minimal waste to KHN: Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and the District of Columbia together registered just 1,090 wasted doses.

In others, the numbers are more significant. On March 19, the Maryland Health Department said it knew of 3,175 wasted doses.

Texas had the most wasted doses of any state in either the CDC’s data or the data states provided to KHN. Its records showed 9,229 wasted doses as of March 26, third overall behind CVS and Walgreens.

Fowlie, the CDC spokesperson, said the agency is “working closely” with states that have technical issues to ensure accurate reporting.

    How To Book Covid

CVS Health said Wednesday that 1,700 locations are now accepting appointments for the pediatric vaccine. Parents should schedule an appointment online at CVS.com or through the CVS pharmacy app.

CVS Health said it plans introduce “child-friendly elements in the coming weeks designed to help motivate and reward the children and help keep them entertained” during the 15-minute post-vaccination observation period.
