Belgium Tightens Curbs But Avoids Lockdown As Covid Cases Peak

FDA authorizes first COVID-19 shot for young children

Belgium tightened its coronavirus restrictions for the third consecutive week to fight one of Europes worst spikes of COVID-19 cases, but stopped short of the strict curbs imposed in the neighbouring Netherlands or Austria.

We cannot allow the train of infection that is thundering through our country to continue at its current pace, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo told a news conference.

With cases among children rising the most, De Croo said mask mandates will apply from age six. The current requirement to wear a mask is for those aged 10 years and older.

Primary schools will shut for Christmas and New Year holidays a week earlier and secondary schools will shift to a hybrid system, with half of classes from home.

United States: Global Vaccinations In Comparison: Which Countries Are Vaccinating Most Rapidly

Why is data on testing important?

No country knows the total number of people infected with COVID-19. All we know is the infection status of those who have been tested. All those who have a lab-confirmed infection are counted as confirmed cases.

This means that the counts of confirmed cases depend on how much a country actually tests. Without testing there is no data.

Testing is our window onto the pandemic and how it is spreading. Without data on who is infected by the virus we have no way of understanding the pandemic. Without this data we cannot know which countries are doing well, and which are just underreporting cases and deaths.

To interpret any data on confirmed cases we need to know how much testing for COVID-19 the country actually does.

The Our World in Data COVID-19 Testing dataset

Because testing is so very crucial to understanding the spread of the pandemic and responding appropriately, we have focused our efforts on building a global dataset on COVID-19 testing.

  • And as with all our work, it is freely accessible for everyone. The data can be downloaded here on GitHub.

Measuring Case And Mortality Rates

Predicting Emerging COVID

In early 2020, deaths from all causes exceeded the seasonal average, and data from early 2020 suggest additional deaths that were not counted in official reported coronavirus mortality statistics. Until February 28, 2020, CDC testing protocols allowed tests only for people who had traveled to China. In most U.S. locations, testing for some time was performed only on symptomatic people with a history of travel to Wuhan or with close contact to such people. The numbers were reported every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and were split into categories: individual travelers, people who contracted the disease from other people within the U.S., and repatriated citizens who returned to the U.S. from crisis locations, such as Wuhan, where the disease originated, and the cruise ship Diamond Princess.

By March 26, 2020, the United States, with the world’s third-largest population, surpassed China and Italy as the country with the world’s highest number of confirmed cases. By April 25, the U.S. had more than 905,000 confirmed coronavirus cases and nearly 52,000 deaths, giving it a mortality rate around 5.7 percent.

On April 14, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control estimated that, as of March 2021, there had been 98.5134.3 million infections in the United States.

Biden Vaccine Mandate Halted For Now: Update On Who Must Show Proof Of Covid Vaccination

Biden’s national vaccine mandate for health care workers was scheduled to start on Dec. 6, but it’s been blocked by a federal judge. Here’s what it means.

The federal COVID-19 vaccine for health care workers has been blocked.

A federal COVID-19 vaccine requirement for health care workers was scheduled to start on Dec. 6, but a federal judge blocked the mandate on Tuesday. This comes less than two weeks after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration suspended the Biden administration’s enforcement of the vaccine mandate for companies with 100 or more employees. The mandate for health care workers would require them to get their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Dec. 6 and the second dose by Jan. 4.

On the other hand, several states and cities have already taken vaccine requirements into their own hands, which proves to be working. “Vaccination requirements have helped reduce the number of unvaccinated Americans ages 12 and older by almost 40 percent — from about 100 million in July to under 60 million now,” White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator Jeff Zients said during a briefing in November.

Earlier in November, 10 states sued the Biden administration in response to the vaccine requirement for health workers. Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, a Republican, requested a restraining order to block the federal vaccine mandate.

When Did The Coronavirus Arrive In The Us Heres A Review Of The Evidence

Was the virus here in January? In December? Earlier? Heres a look at the evidence of how the virus emerged from China and landed in the United States.

By Mike Baker

SEATTLE In a county north of Seattle, two people who came down with respiratory illnesses in December now have antibodies for the coronavirus. In Florida, a public health official who got sick in January believes he had Covid-19.

And in California, a surprising discovery that an early-February death in San Jose was linked to the coronavirus has triggered a broader search for how that person was exposed.

Those cases have contributed to growing questions about when the virus first reached the United States and how long it had been circulating by the time its arrival was publicly confirmed in Washington State at the end of February.

While there was limited testing to uncover specific cases before then, researchers have other tools to trace the path of the coronavirus. That includes genomic sequencing of the virus to help scientists build an ancestral tree of cases, a re-examination of specific deaths and thousands of old flu samples that have been repurposed to look for the coronavirus.

Here is a look at the evidence and what it shows:

Swiss Lift Omicron 10

Timeline: How The Coronavirus Spread In The United States | NBC News NOW

Switzerland announced it was dropping 10-day quarantine rules for people flying in from countries where the Omicron COVID-19 variant has been detected.

The wealthy Alpine nation one of Europes top skiing holiday destinations said the rule no longer made sense now that the variant is also circulating in Switzerland.

Swiss ski resorts are heavily reliant on winter tourists from Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands three countries which had been on the quarantine list.

All countries are removed from the quarantine list as of Saturday, the government said.

Everyone entering Switzerland must present a negative PCR test, except those crossing the border from neighbouring Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Liechtenstein.

India Reached A Million Coronavirus Cases And Lockdowns Were Reimposed

India on July 17 surpassed one million confirmed infections and 25,000 deaths. The milestones came as several states and cities had reimposed total and partial lockdowns and as the country ranked third in the world in infections behind the United States and Brazil. While Indias caseloads continued to climb, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology estimated that by the end of next year, India would have the worst outbreak in the world.

California Healthcare Tax Rejected By Trump Administration

The Trump administration said it will not allow California to collect a healthcare tax on managed care organizations, a move linked to the loss of $2 billion a year for the state in low-income benefits, according to the Associated Press. The decision will affect Californias fiscal year beginning on July 1, 2021, as the state did not plan to receive this income this year. Consistent with the federal governments prior approvals of similar financing waivers, we believe and expect that we can reach an agreement that allows this type of financing to continue, said H.D. Palmer, spokesman for the California Department of Finance.

Restrictions Lifted In Illinois

Predicting Emerging COVID

A new statewide indoor mask mandate went into effect Aug. 29, and beginning Sept. 5, Pritzker said he would use his executive authority to require all workers in K-12 schools, all workers in private and public hospitals, nursing homes and other health care settings, and all workers and students in colleges and universities, to get vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit to weekly testing. Illinois had entered Phase 5 of reopening June 11, which removed all remaining capacity limits and restrictions on all sectors of the economy.

Evacuation Of Foreign Citizens

United States could begin COVID-19 vaccinations by mid-December

Owing to the effective lockdown of Wuhan and Hubei, several countries evacuated their citizens and diplomatic staff from the area, primarily through chartered flights of the home nation, with Chinese authorities providing clearance. Canada, the United States, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, France, Argentina, Germany, and Thailand were among the first to plan the evacuation of their citizens. Brazil and New Zealand also evacuated their own nationals and some other people. On 14 March 2020, South Africa repatriated 112 South Africans who tested negative for the virus from Wuhan, while four who showed symptoms were left behind to mitigate risk. Pakistan said it would not evacuate citizens from China.

On 15 February 2020, the US announced it would evacuate Americans aboard the cruise ship Diamond Princess, and on 21 February, Canada evacuated 129 Canadian passengers from the ship. In early March, the Indian government began evacuating its citizens from Iran. On 20 March, the United States began to partially withdraw its troops from Iraq due to the pandemic.

What If The Virus Quietly Arrived In December

Doctors in France have said that a patients sample from late December has since tested positive for the coronavirus. But so far, there is no comparable evidence of a similar case in the United States.

The strongest possible indicator so far is new evidence that emerged this week of two people in Snohomish County, Wash., who reported coronavirus-like symptoms in December. Both people later tested positive for antibodies, county health officials announced.

But Dr. Chris Spitters, the countys health officer, said that while it was possible that both people had the coronavirus in December even before officials in China had reported a cluster to the World Health Organization at the end of the month he was doubtful.

Its possible and frankly, I think, more likely that they had a non-Covid respiratory viral illness in December and subsequently had an asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic Covid infection subsequent to that, Dr. Spitters said.

Dr. Bedford said he also believed this was the more likely scenario, noting that up to half of people with coronavirus infections have no symptoms.

There could have been a tiny number of isolated coronavirus cases among travelers to the United States in December, Dr. Bedford said. But it is pretty clear that none of them spread.

In part, scientists can tell that by looking at the genomic fingerprints of each case. But another clue is the rapid rate at which the virus spreads, Dr. Rutherford said.

Companies With Employee Vaccination Requirements

Several companies have announced plans for mandatory vaccinations, including airlines, cruise lines, concert halls, health care facilities and restaurants. Some of the requirements may include mask and testing guidelines, and some may only apply to employees traveling internationally, working in the office or having face-to-face interactions with customers. If any of these applies to you, check with your employer for more details.

Here are some of the companies that have announced vaccination requirements for employees:

  • Amtrak
  • Walmart

Screening Containment And Mitigation

Strategies in the control of an outbreak are screening, containment , and mitigation. Screening is done with a device such as a thermometer to detect the elevated body temperature associated with fevers caused by the infection. Containment is undertaken in the early stages of the outbreak and aims to trace and isolate those infected as well as introduce other measures to stop the disease from spreading. When it is no longer possible to contain the disease, efforts then move to the mitigation stage: measures are taken to slow the spread and mitigate its effects on the healthcare system and society. A combination of both containment and mitigation measures may be undertaken at the same time. Suppression requires more extreme measures so as to reverse the pandemic by reducing the basic reproduction number to less than 1.

More drastic actions aimed at containing the outbreak were taken in China once the severity of the outbreak became apparent, such as quarantining entire cities and imposing strict travel bans. Other countries also adopted a variety of measures aimed at limiting the spread of the virus. South Korea introduced mass screening and localised quarantines and issued alerts on the movements of infected individuals. Singapore provided financial support for those infected who quarantined themselves and imposed large fines for those who failed to do so. Taiwan increased face mask production and penalised the hoarding of medical supplies.

President Donald Trump , which he says will open up $50 billion in federal funding to fight COVID-19.

The CDC warns against holding or attending gatherings larger than 50 people, including conferences, festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events and weddings for eight weeks, recommending that individuals cancel or postpone those events to avoid spreading the virus or introducing it into new communities.

West Virginia reports its first COVID-19 case, meaning the disease is present in all 50 states.

Six countries in the San Francisco area ordered to “shelter in place” for three weeks, meaning residents are required to remain at home unless they are leaving the house for an essential reason, or are exercising outdoors.

China reports no new domestic infections in the country for the first time since the outbreak began. If the trend holds for 14 days, it could be a sign that China’s outbreak is ending. The country is still seeing travel-related COVID-19 cases and it remains to be seen whether China will be able to prevent a second wave of infection, once the government’s strict lockdown measures are lifted.

Italy’s death toll tops 4,000, making it the first country to report more overall deaths than China, despite its much smaller population. The following week, COVID-19 deaths in Spain would similarly eclipse deaths in China.
