President Trump Tested Positive For The Virus

President Trump said early on Oct. 2 that he and the first lady had tested positive for the coronavirus, throwing the nations leadership into uncertainty and escalating the crisis posed by a pandemic that had already killed more than 207,000 Americans and devastated the economy.

Mr. Trump had a fever, congestion and a cough and was hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He returned to the White house on Oct. 5.

Desantis Orders Statewide Shutdown For Florida Through April

TALLAHASSEE Gov. Ron DeSantis is ordering all Floridians to stay at home beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday, a decision that came after mounting pressure from health officials and other critics to lock down the state in the fight against the coronavirus.

Florida had been the only state with more than 5,000 cases without such an order, with DeSantis insisting that localized orders for South Florida and by individual cities and counties were sufficient.

But by Wednesday, the state had nearly 7,800 cases and was seeing one of the biggest day-over-day increases in the country.

DeSantis said at a Tallahassee news conference that he would order for Floridians to limit movements and personal interaction outside the home” to just essential services and activities.

The order includes exceptions for essential services getting food, medical supplies, hospital visits and working for crucial industries like grocery stores and pharmacies, for example. Religious services in houses of worship are also permitted, as are recreational activities such as fishing, hunting, walking, running, biking and swimming.

Caring for pets also is specifically permitted, the order says.

A social gathering in a public place is not an essential activity, the order states. Local jurisdictions shall ensure that groups of people greater than 10 are not permitted to congregate in any public place.

Its another 30-day situation, DeSantis said. And weve got to do what makes sense.

Trump Calls For Shutdown Until April 30

How does COVID

President Donald Trump is extending the voluntary national shutdown for a month as sickness and death from the coronavirus pandemic rise in the U.S.

The initial 15-day period of social distancing urged by the federal government expires Monday and Trump had expressed interest in relaxing the national guidelines at least in parts of the country less afflicted by the pandemic. But instead he decided to extend them through April 30, a tacit acknowledgment he’d been too optimistic. Many states and local governments have stiffer controls in place on mobility and gatherings.

Trump’s impulse to restore normalcy met a sober reality check Sunday from Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, who said the U.S. could experience more than 100,000 deaths and millions of infections from the pandemic. Trump’s decision to extend the guidelines reflected a recognition that the struggle will take place over the longer haul.

The federal guidelines recommend against large group gatherings and urge older people and anyone with existing health problems to stay home. People are urged to work at home when possible and avoid restaurants, bars, non-essential travel and shopping trips.

The extension would leave the federal recommendations in place beyond Easter on April 12, by which time Trump had hoped the country and its economy could start to rev up again. Alarmed public-health officials said Easter was sure to be too soon.

Putin orders a workplace shutdown amid COVID

The W.H.O. said that it took Africa 98 days to reach 100,000 coronavirus cases, but only 18 days for that figure to double. While the sharp rise in cases could be explained by an increase in testing, the agency said, more than half of the 54 countries on the continent were experiencing community transmissions. Ten countries were driving the rise in numbers and accounted for nearly 80 percent of all cases. South Africa has a quarter of the total cases.

Three different vaccines lead to big increases in antibody levels when used as boosters

Three covid-19 vaccines given as boosters in a UK trial were safe and provoked strong immune responses, researchers have reported. The study involved 2878 adults aged 30 or over, all of whom previously had two doses of either the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine or the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. They were given booster vaccines 10 to 12 weeks after their second dose.

The trial tested seven vaccines as boosters: AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Novavax, Janssen, Moderna, Valneva and Curevac. The researchers measured levels of antibodies and T cells in the participants blood. The Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines all produced strong antibody and T cell responses, regardless of which vaccine had been given for the first two doses. The results suggest that peoples immunity from covid-19 increased, although the study does not yet include data on how well people are protected against infection or disease.

The trial was carried out in early 2021, when alpha was the dominant coronavirus variant in the UK. Saul Faust, the trial lead at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, said that although this trial cannot show how effective boosters are against the omicron variant, the T cell responses could be helpful in this respect.

Coronavirus: The Week The World Shut Down

How to Prepare for a School Shutdown

Walls have been raised and societies quarantined as people enter a new reality

It should not have come as a surprise. Life had already been upended in China. Iran and Italy have been reeling for a month. And yet it still felt sudden, this week, when walls were raised across the world, entire societies were quarantined and billions of people realised they had crossed a dividing line: from life before coronavirus to after.

After weeks of governments prevaricating over whether to ban mass gatherings, close businesses or seal borders, restrictions came in a flurry. We are at war, announced the French president, Emmanuel Macron. But without adequate weapons to fight the virus, let alone enough hospital beds or ventilators, this was the week the world beat a tactical retreat.

Spains 46 million citizens were in lockdown by Sunday morning. Its death toll would double by the end of the day to 288. People had partied in Dublins Temple Bar on Saturday night. It was a last hurrah: the neighbourhoods water holes were indefinitely closed the following day.

The same day, Germany closed its borders to France, Switzerland and Austria, whose chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, warned the country the next weeks would be challenging, difficult and painful. More than 1,400 people had died in Italy.

Reem spent the first Sunday at home crying, her father said. I had friends at school and learned from my teachers there, she said.

Why Is It Called Covid

The World Health Organisation wanted to make sure the name of disease didn’t refer to a place, group of people or an animal.

“Having a name matters to prevent the use of other names that can be inaccurate or stigmatising,” WHO’s director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said.

“It also gives us a standard format to use for any future coronavirus outbreaks.”

They also wanted to make sure it wasn’t complicated to pronounce, so ordinary people could remember it and talk about it easily.

Some people remember it by saying it to the tune of the Dexy’s Midnight Runners song Come on Eileen.

If you want to get specific, COVID-19 is the name of the disease this strain of virus causes, in the same way AIDS is the disease caused by HIV.

‘CO’stands for corona, ‘VI’ is for virus, and ‘D’is for disease.

The virus itself is actually called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, which is shortened to SARS-CoV-2.

But it’s totally fine to just call it “coronavirus”.
